After
1. Replacing the right side plate due to wallowed out quick take apart screw hole.
2. Installing SS gear sleeve and star from Cortez Conversions.
3. Installing the 5+1 from Bryan with Cal's grease.

Everything seemed fine at first? I lifted 11 pounds off the floor with reel on the rod but I had to button down the star TIGHT.

Then went fishing last night and noticed that I could spin the star too many times for no increase in drag and when the star was tightened, I had very little drag. It looks like this at the two extremes. Please advise.

Hate to ask but are you beyond certain the drag disks are in the correct order?

Could the top eared washer be out of the grooves on the main resting on top of the gear?

Did you put an absurd amount of grease?

Are you utterly 10,000% beyond certain that the line isn't slipping on the spool?

Yup

Yeah, those possible issues. Never had that happen before. Star is ok?(not thread stripped).
Fishing tackle is an art form and all fish caught on the right tackle are"Gfish"!

I followed the order that came with the kit. New star and new sleeve made for each other.

I'll dis and re-assemble. (Sometimes that's all it takes >:D )

Yeah, this is a simple fix —-

Your disassemble and making sure the drag stack is seated properly, the line is not slipping, and there are no stripped threads on the sleeve —- should get you there in good order.

Is part 9-60, the spacing sleeve from the 505 or another reel? Are you the original 505 owner? I had bought a few reels where it had parts from the wrong reel and this was one reel part issue that took me a while to figure out.

Yup, if the star bottoms out on the frame things do not work.

My new gear sleeve is taller and I would have expected the drag stack to more completely fill the gear. The spacer matches another 505 at 11mm or 7/16.

I'm the second owner of this 505 and a matching 506. They fished fine with the carbontex 3 stack and I replaced the gear sleeve on the 506 without issue but I kept the 3 stack. I thought to go further with this 505.

JasonGotaProblem

Use one of the thicker carbons at the top?

I put the carbontex 3 stack back in with the new gear sleeve and it is a little better but not good. Maybe a 6th pair of drag washers?

JasonGotaProblem

You just need a taller spacer. Using a thick top washer would eat up some of that missing height and allow you to still use that 5stack you bought. Are you in US? I may have taller spacers.

When you assemble the 5+1, after installing a CF, a keyed washer, and another CF then inspect - do the grooves in the gear go down below the second CF?  If not, it is possible the next washer in the stack (eared washer) is bottoming out/hanging up in the grooves, in which case the bottom 2 CF and one keyed washer are not being fully compressed/contributing to the drag. - john

Sounds like the new 505 gear sleeve is not allowing the star to go any further down to push more pressure onto the drags. You can try adding a 8-60 wavy washer or two on the top of the drag stack and if you have room for one more between the spacing sleeve & star. You can also just add two 8-60 wavy washers between the spacing sleeve and star to see if this will tighten the drag more. This will allow you to test and not spend more money for a taller spacing sleeve.

If I understand this discussion, it sounds like a simple fix is just getting a taller spacer. But once this is fixed, you need to be careful: The 505 is a faster reel because it has more teeth on the main gear -- and these teeth are thinner and weaker than those on a standard 500. It is very easy to trash those thinner teeth if you fish at high drag. A solution is to find a steel main gear but these are expensive and not easy to find.
