I just replaced the heavy aluminum oxide stone from the left aide of my metal, stand mounted, black and decker 6" grinder, and replaced it with a brass wire wheel brush. The right side still has the much heavier stone and the balance is way off. Vibration is off the charts. The stand is not bolted in place.
I really never use the stones, so I can do without both of them.
If I install a buffing wheel on the other side, will it balance things out?

Thanks for your help.

It might take care of the vibration, Steve —-

The other things to look at would be to make sure the arbors are properly center mounted, and not off-center.

Then, even with a HD stand —- the stand should be bolted down into the concrete.  Redheads work the best after drilling holes with a concrete drill bit. Otherwise, the stand will "dance" towards you from left to right.

Or, the grinder can be bench-mounted.

Thanks for responding Sensei.
I purchased a full face shield when I bought the wire wheel.
I'm not a fan of permanent installations in my garage. Thinking about maybe bolting it to a Concrete A/C Pad.
Before I do that, I will change out the other stone for a polishing/buffing wheel. My bench space is already overloaded.

maybe get a speed reducer, so the brush doesnt sling so many wires out and isnt too aggressive. Check speed on brush is compatible with the grinders speed. Brush should have max allowed speed written on it. As the other man said, maybe it tweak a bit when mounting. Maybe try remounting the brush, making sure its well centered.
I have an adjustable speed grinder that I plan to do same as you, put a brush on one side. But, if I find another used one for sale locally at a good price, I may just use one for brushes and one for grind stones, coarse and fine brushes and same for stones.

Interesting issues. 😕 I have three 6" bench grinders, a Skill, a Black & Decker & a cheapy China made one. None of them are bolted down and none of them vibrate. They all sit on a very solid table and they all have rubber cushioned feet which helps to keep them from vibrating. They will, though, slide back little if I push too hard against the wheels, but when they do I just move them forward again. One has a steel wire wheel & coarse stone, one has a brass wire wheel and fine stone and the third has both coarse and fine stones. I have a buffing wheel that I'll switch out with the brass wire wheel. I like them to be moveable in the event that I want to pick one up and take it with me sometimes.
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)

It sounds like the wire wheel is off center on the arbor.  I had to make a cone shaped sleeve for my grinder to center the wheel.  Bill
It may not be very productive,
but it's sure going to be interesting!
