Thanks Ken, I'll check what you suggested and hopefully will work.

Also, what is the advantage of the small spring . . .is it needed or is the regular set up workable??
No rush . . . I was just wondering which is better.

Hi. You will need the spring. If you remove it, when you go to cast, and make the cast, your reel will forever remain in cast, not returning to reel mode.

It's job is to pull the clutch arm back, dropping the pinion yoke,
so the pinion will mesh with the main gear.   

In early reels, it was prone to breakage, so they modified the position holder incorporating an internal spring...no more breaks. As per the pic linked.
