113H Lighter Drag

Hi Guys,
I got a question about setting up a 113H drag.
according to the schematics from MysticParts its a post 1996 reel

what I'm shooting for is a freshwater strength smooth drag for this reel.
I target striped bass in my local Lake. I don't need really over 5 or 6lb of drag.

I picked up a Jvariance kit and built it Sunday.
I put teflon drag washers and greased them also.
when I finished the drag seems a little on stiff side.
after taking the reel apart and experimenting about 7 or 8 times
I found that if I leave out 2 washers, the tension spring 8, and the tension spring  drag 8a washers,
the reel then performs exactly like I want it to.

My question is leaving out these 2 washers,  Am I going to have a problem?

What are you doing to make up for the space on the gear sleeve from the unused parts?  Other than that I don't see problems but I prefer to have the spring washers or Belleville replacement washers in the stack to buffer the drag.

Welome to the Forum.

If that's all the drag you need you could remove a couple of drag washers leaving the spring washers and  Bellevilles to prevent drag  slippage.

Do you have a 5 stack or 3 stack drag washer set-up?

If you have a 5 stack, I would configure the drags so that you reduce the drag surface by stacking

Drag Washer
Drag Washer
Keyed Washer
Keyed Washer
Drag washer
Drag Washer
Eared Washer
Eared Washer
Drag Washer
Keyed Washer
Spring Washer...

You could also do for a minimum drag setting as you will only have 2 drag services between the eared and keyed washer:
Drag Washer
Drag Washer
Drag Washer
Eared Washer
Eared Washer
Drag washer
Drag Washer
Keyed Washer
Keyed Washer
Keyed Washer
Spring Washer...

The benefits with a 5 washer drags stack.  You have many options to set up the drags for maximum to minimum.

Thats the one thing i dont understand.

I bought the reel off ebay used, When I pulled it down
it appeared to have all new drag washers in it, and it was
very clean on the inside.

What I have now is.
drag, keyed drag,  eared, drag, keyed, drag, eared, drag, keyed

Im going to try your 2 drag configurations, on 2 other 4/0s I have and
and the one that works the best after a couple of fishing trips
Im going to put that one in all my reels.

i would think that a lighter drag would be smoother with more drag washers.  also, stay with carbon fiber.

When it comes to the 113H, now I've seen it all.  Many are beefing their's up for BIG fish and I'm trying to convince someone to try a 1+7 drag stack.  Then you come along and want to go with a very light drag for freshwater.  What a great reel the 113H is.  I'll bet the folks at Penn never envisioned how versatile it could be when they designed it. 

BTW what rod do you use with your 113H for fresh water?  You must catch a few puzzled stares.

that made me laugh, thanks,  I use the light drags on downriggers pulling live bait.  I put them on Shimano 7' graphite rods
I got to balance enough power to get the fish out of the trees with out pulling the hook.

Yep the bass fisherman, really do look at me funny, esp if I leave them in the leaning post when I'm pulling the boat out at the landing.. haha
