Hi Alan & gang,
So I've had my friends calcutta TE400 for a few days now. first one i've ever seen in person.. I'm more used to trolling reels..and for the life of me I can't figure out why the freespool button won't fully depress to enable casting. it seems jammed. it only moves a fraction of it's travel. my friend complained of increased winding resistance before the freespool thumb button stopped working.
No visible corrosion inside, no rust. It's reely clean inside  :D

i haven't been able to get the main gear out to see underneath.....it took a couple strokes of the file to remove the first metal drag washer from main gear but I haven't been able to pull the main gear up and off.
i've tried gently prying underside of the main gear against the AR gear with a small flathead, but the gear won't budge.
am i missing a trick here?  ???

ok, I was missing a trick..bang bang bang, the plastic mallet did nicely..& BTW, the teeth on the gear are sharp, so watch ur fingers.

just like Alan warned, the tiniest of springs fell out, not a bridge spring... waaay smaller....along with what looks like a tiny plunger as well...i almost didn't see it it's so small.....  What the heck is that??
does that somehow fit into one of the 2 small holes in the bottom of the main gear?? where does it go?

Alan, help, I need a tutorial....... ;D

Thanks all
Erik

G'day Erik,
This tutorial may be of some assistance (for the A series): http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=2430.0
The parts that fell out are likely to be the detente and spring.
Have a look at pic 9 in Mark Mayo's tutorial here: http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=301.0
They fit in the main gear shaft.
Pics 54-56 should assist in refitting these parts.
RE: the free-spool button, there could be a number of explanations.
First off, it must be 'up' when refitting the side plate, or it'll bind and not actuate properly.
However, seeing as it stopped working during use, it may be binding somewhere on the set plate due to build-up or corrosion.
It also may be worth checking the springs #2711 or #1223.
Schematic here: http://fish.shimano.com/media/fishing/techdocs/en/CTE400_v1_m56577569830575829.pdf
Let us know how you get on...
Good luck, Justin

G'day Justin, thanks for the quick reply..
I think I've id'd those little parts...

http://www.mikesreelrepair.com/schematics/albums/shimano/Shimano_CTE400.pdf

they are 2122 & 2123 on the schematic..Drag Click pin & spring....
they fit into the Drag Click Pin Holder (2697) which sits underneath the AR ratchet of all places  ???
not sure what it does and not quite sure how I'm gonna get it lined up, but at least i know where it goes now...

Upon further inspection...with some reading glasses  :'( .... I'm able to see now why maybe the freespool lever won't push down...
i think...
Looks like the 2449 Clutch Pawl (stainless steel), where it rests against the anodized side plate in the "retrieve" position
has caused a some pitting in the anodizing...like a cavity..and that is holding up the pawl from sliding down freely. It's trapped in that little pit.. It is the ONLY place in the entire reel that has any corrosion or pitting...and the worst place it could be I reckon.

I guess I'll have to try to grind or file it down somehow and see it I can get it to slide freely again..
Unless someone has another solution?

Cheers,
Erik

Well spotted Erik.
I hadn't come across the detente (aka click pin) and spring in that configuration before - apologies for leading you astray.
Sounds like you've got it sorted.
Cheers, Justin
