I'm about to buy this reel and i noticed on ebay some at a very good price.

My question is: are there two different versions of the penn 16 VSX an old one ?

On the ebay specs I see 28lb of max drag, while on pennreels.com it is stated 30/42 Lb of max drag.

Thanks,

Lorenzo

I'm talking about the Penn VSX not the VS.

And was wondering if a new version of the reel came out and there is a good pricing on the older version.

Supposedly, Penn is coming out with a new Torque 2 speed lever drag. It is possible that the larger lever drag Torques will replace the smaller Internationals (12 and 16 size). That is just a guess on my part but if true, the prices should drop on the smaller Internationals.

Thanks!

But is the real max drag of this reel 28lb or 42lb?

Seems there is a big difference from the two...

from what i read the drag maxs out at 28 lbs. they have an early model and a late model. both models carry the same line capacity. i dont see any differnce in the schematic from what i can tell.

From Penn's website:
               Strike        Maximum
16VSX         30              42

16 VS          11              28

At the end I bought it..

So I will let you know the real max drag as soon as It arrives :)

I just got mine and, loaded with 80 lb spectra (700 yards), I get 35 lbs of drag at Strike with complete freespool and 45 lbs at full - right out of the box. :)

The reel has arrived and I noticed a strange thing: the switch button for the two speed option is in metal while in all the pictures I found on the internet it is in plastic.

Serial number is: 1110084

What about yours?

kamuwela

i recently heard they replaced the plastic button. im glad they did the plastic ones always wound up cracking from the spline on the shaft.

alantani

all the new ones have metal push buttons instead of plastic.
send me an email at alantani@yahoo.com for questions!

Cool.  I just bought one from some outfit in North Dakota on Fleabay, and it has the metal shift button also.  I plan to run 100# hollow on it, with a rail rod.  Seems like plenty of drag and I'm sending it to Cal Sheets for the granny low gear.
