I am not sure of the proper terminology so I apologize in advance. I have a 5500ss that when it is locked, as in, I can only add line to the reel, there is a short period, sometimes 1/2 a spin from the handle, sometimes more, that the handle can go backwards, as in remove line from the reel. I am not sure if that may make sense to any of you, but if it does not, I can possibly post a video on youtube and add the link here. Thanks

Sounds like you have a bad dog, part #4 on the schematic:

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Another question. On Scotts website.. https://www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/Penn5500SS.aspx
there are 2 differnt dogs, 1 which states is for newer style, and 1 for older. Which one would I choose ? Thanks in advance.

I just serviced two Penn 5500SS and both had a glob of grease on the dog.  One of the reels would not lock up and the other was intermitent.  Remove the spool, the rotor, and clean the grease off.  Lube with a good protectant, like TSI321 or CorrosionX and you will be back in action.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

IMG, there are (3) reels of the same size, the 550SS, the 5500ss and the latest 550SSG.
The 550SS and the 5500SS share the same dogs, the 550SSG has a A/R bearing.
Personally, I'm not crazy about the 550SSG.
There has been some design changes with the dog, you would be OK with either one. I recommend this one, the older style:

Bryan also has a good point, I'm betting that it is your dog though. Sometimes the dog appears to be in good shape, but the tip of the finger springs get worn on the inside, cousing the dog to slip every now and then.
The 550ss is a nice little reel, I use these a lot.

If your dog is bad, you may need the ratchet as well. It's cheap and easy to replace. Order one when you order the dog.

Just finished servicing my reel and it did not have any excess grease on the dogs. I will be ordering the dog tonight. Thanks !
