Penn Battle Spool Bearing

I have noticed that on the Penn Battle, there is a spool bearing on the shaft right over the teflon washer.  It looks like it is sealed with a black plastic laminate. I was wondering what really was the point of this bearing? There only purpose I see from it, is it makes the spool spin much more smoothly when the drag is engaged. Other Spinning reels like the old SS, Slammer, and the Sargus don't have this addition and their drags feel just fine.

I have a Battle 4000 very smooth reel only time will tell if will hold up like the old Penns.
I used it in the Keys for a week and loved it now I use it for perch fishing on Lake Michigan. Have not yet put it to any great test.

In my Okuma vs series reels, the main spool has two and the spar spool uses bushings. I cannot tell the difference myself, but I think I'd opt for bushings. The bearings, I pack with Cal's grease to protect them.
