I have an ABU Garcia Ambassadeur 5500 C part number 89-0 that I want to tune up.  Before I changed out the drag I wanted to take it apart and put it back together just familiarize myself with the proccess.  While I was at it I cleaned up a bit.  I placed an order for some Carbontex drags, cals grease, and corrison X.  My questions with the spool is does it really come apart on this model.  I had it out but I could not break it down and did not want to pry on it.  The schmatic shows it apart then names the assembly "SPOOL COMPL. 970385" (spool drawing attached) Does it not really come apart?  I am already a bit disapointed it uses bushing instead of bearings but I like this reel so I am keeping it.  should I grease or oil the bushings? Can I upgrade to bearings?  Thanks

G'day jp,
Yes, the spool assembly comes apart.
There's a wire cir-clip (#13084) on the right side that simply pops off (with a small screwdriver or the like).
Then the cast control (#19372) lifts off to reveal the bushing.
The spring washer beneath (#13104) must retain its curve, so be careful not to flatten it.
The clicker gear (#19373) will pop out with finger force and the left-side bushing then slides out also.
Both bushings can be upgraded to bearings, but don't underestimate the efficacy of bushings - they get better and better over time and won't fail like bearings.
Abu use 'em for good reason...
It's already 'sintered', meaning it's imbued with oil, but you can use a little light oil on the bushing if required.
Grease will compromise it.
Let us know if you run into any problems.
Good luck, Justin

Thanks redsetta,  I didn't see any clips but I will look closer next time I break it down and do a detailed cleaning and lube.  I was more concerned about getting it all back together since this my first time taking a reel all the way apart.  Just by cleaning drag washers and applying a little lube here and there I am amazed how much smoother it is and how much eaiser freel spool clicks in and releases.  Can't wait to see what taking out the metal drags and adding carbontex drag washers will do.  Thank you
