It's official, I'm headed to the Philipines.

6 months in the middle of nowhere. So, while I'm their I'd like to increase my proficiency at servicing reels. I am proficient at Senators and older Penns, and the Diawa Millionaire and Sealine series. I can also do Mitchell 300s and Shimano front drags.

My question is, what else should I work on? I'm thinking I'm gonna start advertising to service reels when I get back, just as a hobby more than an honest business effort. What reels should I buy to develope proficiency on? I figure some kind of lever drag, what else? I'm really interested in basket cases that I can bring back to life in order to really learn them. I figure I have $200.00 or so to spend.

Thanks
Ron

Yes or you will end up like us. Reels coming out of our ears and no time for fishing. I'm not complaining though. It's therapeutic for me at times.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

x2 Bryan - couldn't agree more... ;)

That's just it, the Navy is sending me over their and threat con in the area means I can't leave post! I can only tie muddler minnows and streamers and read Hemingway so long, I figure I may as well come back with a new skill set. I will be living in a 20ish foot container all by my lonesome for 6 months.

I've played with various low pros, pain in the rear but I can get them done. I have fished 1 brand new GT320LD when they first came out, biggest but was 30ish pounds but it did a fine job with a 180 pounder the week before I went out. I was born and raised a star drag guy but I don't want to limit myself.

Thanks again,
Ron

Gotta ask.....what does FTC (SS) do?  and why sequestered in a connex?   or will the feds come knocking on my door soon ;D
It may not be very productive,
but it's sure going to be interesting!

Where I'm at I see a lot of ABU 5XXX and 6XXX reels with some Shimano Calcuttas and low profile reels.  Figure out what is the most common reels in the area you plan on setteling in and learn them.  Most reels aren't that hard to work on, especially with the crew here helping when we run into something new.
Hi, my name is Lee and I have a fishing gear problem.

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

FTC (SS) stands for Fire Control Technician Chief Submarines. Basically I was trained to track contacts underwater and aim and shoot torpedoes and missiles. However, I've been a Chief for a good bit now, that means I take care of junior sailors. Basically, you watch officers do a bunch of exciting stuff in the movies, Chiefs run the boat to let the officers play their games.

No doubt! Seems quite a life Ron.
No subs in NZ - the only one I've ever seen was the Bowfin(?) in Hawaii in '83.

God bless the Chiefs and Sergeants!!!!! If it weren't for them.... officers wouldn't look so good ;D!!  Stay safe brother....

Not in NZ, but the Ausies have some unbelievable boats. I have played with them and toured the Collins class, it is amazing.
