Thinking of a Stradic ST5000FJ to fish for Coho Salmon from a boat-a little fast trolling and some light jigging-the old Stradic 4000 has seen better days.

Without starting a Ford vs Chevy argument IYO is there an equivalent Daiwa model-in terms of value & features?

No interest in Penn or Okuma having retailed both in the past and service for both brands here in BC is sketchy anyway.

TIA.

There is not an even close model from Daiwa that would be comparable, imo, with the Saltist being the only contender.

The primary issue is the Anti-Reverse Clutch which is sub-standard on Daiwas until you get up into the "Super Spinner" category and spend $800 (ie Daiwa Catalina).

The Roller Clutch on the Shimanos is vastly stronger and more reliable and is why the Stradics or Saragosas are used successfully for jigging with 6-10oz jigs routinely. Daiwa has a barrel AR bearing with the pins in a nylon cage with weak springs that is known for failure so cannot be recommended for trolling or the stress jigging puts on them.

2 cents, be sure to get more opinions.
