Any reason why spinning reels seem to be out of favor with several folks here...??

I am beginning to draw my own conclusions....but I would love to hear what some here think the reason is... ;D

Too difficult to service.  That's mainly it.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

First for my southern California style of fishing where live bait is the norm conventional reels offer the best way to flyline a bait. Second until somewhat recently spinners did not offer the stopping or cranking power needed for our style of fishing unless you fished a pretty big reel. Lastly fishing on charter boats with 20-30 fisherman and having to go over/under other anglers while yourself and others are hooked to fish spinners can have their bail bumped and opened which can cause several problems.

Edit: Also you can get a conventional reel with the same capabilities for both stopping and cranking power, material used and line capacity for about 1/3 the cost of a spinner.

I have always preferred spinning reels to conventional.  However, for larger fish, the cost of quality spinning reels (Stella, Dogfight, Torque, etc.) gets absurd compared to conventional.  For inshore saltwater fishing though, I still go to my spinning reels most every time.

Again, not as easy to service as conventionals and pricey.  Here on the east coast many of our long range and party boats prohibit the use of spectra/braided lines thus capacity plays a big part when forced to use mono.  Conventionals carry more mono than spinning reels hands down.

Here in s.w. Fl. Im about the only angler using casting tackle.  I cant even really find it in local shops.  Fl. in general its almost totally spinning even offshore.  I think for the same amount of money, you get much more reel buying conventional compared to spinning as far as features or quality.

Thanks so far for the posts..

My general question concerned why you choose not to service spinning reels.

A few folks here mentioned the complexity of the reels.

What about customer satisfaction?

I have sent out about 60 invoices since I took my business on line and began soliciting business.

The only people I have had a problem making completely happy were spinning reel customers.

Pretty much everyone else that had an issue, we were able to resolve it.

I have cleaned and serviced Stellas, Sustains and bunches of Stradics...as well as a few Saltist and others.

I even index the pinion and main gears of the Stellas and Sustains...but the folks that use them have been very hard to satisfy....

My decision is to turn them away...and send them to Shimano.

I know I opened up a brand new Fin nor 65 the other day right out of the box(6 to be exact) and what do I find?NOT one stitch of lubricant anywhere, not a bearing or any mechanical surface, very confusing I admit, now I will not knock those reels a bit but when any customer brings me a Fin nor they have been fishing I will be very leary of servicing them because of that fact and will open it in front of the customer before going further.Spinners are more of a challange to do but hey I don't mind them if they are maintained.

The main reason I will turn down spinners is because of abuse, and to the point of customer satisfaction, some of those guys are paying 400 to 800 dollars for a spinning reel that they push beyond the limits a spinning reel was designed for and always wonder why it doesn't feel like the way they bought it when new.

spinning reels are so much more finnicky and no one is ever happy with the results.  least of all, me.   :-\
