I recently acquired a Senator 114H with black sideplates.  They are clearly black, not just maroon with a blackish patina.

It is in excellent condition.  I've opened it up.  It has the original asbestos drag washers.

How rare are these (with black sideplates)?  Anyone know the history of these?  Rough year of manufacture?  I could find only a few thoughts in my searches.

Thanks!

I heard they were made for a year or so before Penn made the red side plate 114H reels.  I the past 18 months I have aquired two of them with one being a New in box reel.  The other reel is like new.  I have seen one or two listed on ebay.   Seems like I paid $75. for one and $140. for the NEW IN BOX reel.

I saw one in Baja, had that nice GREEN patina on all the outer metal bits and spool.....

guy wanted to trade it to me for a calcutta 400, which was good deal he said because the 113h was much bigger and could handle any fish that swims
