Penn Longbeach 60 drag wear

Was asked to service a 60 that I had serviced four or five years ago. I had swaped out the original leather drag washers for 6-60 HT-100 washers. The metal washers were plated, but in good shape. When I pulled it down today I was suprised to find two of the HT-100 washers were worn smooth. All the woven material was worn off of one side and nearly gone from the other side. They had been geased with Cals. I have never seen much wear on HT-100s and always felt them indestructible. Anyone have any ideas why? The owner uses it for Texas Gulf Coast red snapper.
