abu garcia 7000 clicker

I have a question about the clicker on my abu Garcia 7000 c3,i believe its a 1991 by the numbers on the reel foot.When you engage the clicker it pops back to off 80 percent of the time when reeling the reel in,when it does stay engaged it makes no noise at all when you pull line off the reel but when you reel the reel in its very loud.I was thinking maybe the clicker spring is worn out,the clicker gear looks perfectly fine,no wear anywhere that I can see.Anyone got any ideas before I start replacing parts?The reel is like brand new,and I just put carbon fiber drags in it and everything else works 100%,thanx again for any input.

Hi. Sounds like the plastic spool gear is worn.  The click tongue will wear the teeth down over time.
