Is there a tutorial or some info on how to change the bushings on a 500/501 to a ball bearings.

Thanks

I asked that question a long time ago. It possibly can be done for a lot of $$$$$, but it's not worth the trouble. Different spool, sideplates, bearings, gears, etc.
You're better off buying a 505 or 506.
500/501's are simple (lower maintenance), cast well and more resistant to dirt because they don't have ball bearings.

You might also find a NEW set of Newell Long Cast Bushings. These might help you, these will be a lot cheaper then the major project you wanted to do.
I have not failed.  I just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

I believe you're better off with bushings, but that's just me :-\.
Choke up the spool on a hand held drill, hold the other side of the spool shaft in some fine stainless steel wool and let it spin for a minute or two, adding a drop of oil. Repeat for the other side and watch that baby spin when you place it back in the reel.
I was never crazy about those newell plastic bushings.
Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Do the Tib 99 size spools work with both or just the 500s?

If you drill a small hole in the end for oil they are not bad.
