I'm just a bit late    ;)    to this party, but are Newell 3.6:1 (or similar) gears available for the 200 series?

Bryan Young

No they're not. Only 5:1 gears are being produced.  You might be able to use Penn 500/501 gears in a pinch.  I haven't tried them on the Newells yet to see if any modifications are necessary.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

I believe it's the Penn 506 gears are the correct ones because they are 5-1. Only problem is the main gear is Brass, I'm not sure of the pinion gear though.

I have not failed.  I just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

Maybe not being produced at the moment but I have P235 3.6 in my desk. I am hoping Alan Chui solves all the penn gear issues and gets started on the Newell gears next. 3.6 gears are at the top of my list

You got my last set of 3.6-1 gears

I would if FedEx was not so expensive. Hope your boat gets out soon. With the current forecast Tuesday is iffy for us and Thur looks promising. All that I can do is just lift weights to prepare for the next trip when it happens.

Bummer.  Sounds like a common issue.  Has anyone actually used Penn Main Gears and Pinions to lower the Newell gear ratios?

The old Penns were 3.3:1 if I remember correctly, 500 series were 4.25 maybe?...and I have one or two 140s/500s/501s/etc. I could pull from...

Yes it can be done.  I just swapped out some 5:1 p338-F gears for penn 4:1 steel gears.  Didn't seem to have any issue.

Do you still have any more sets for sell?
Do my reels make me look PHAT?

GKFISH

I install Penn gears all the time for Newell customers...Never had an issue.

5-500 main gear
13-500 pinion gear

I believe you can also use Penn's 505/506 gears as well.

Dawn,
Shure could use a set of 4.6 gears for a 500 series, and a set of 3.2s for the 600 series
  Thanks,  Speedwagon2
