If the plate comes off with the spool it means the spindle of the spool is rusted to the pinion gear. If you take out the 4 screws in the middle everything should fall apart & you will have a pile of parts. Do it on a bench or table  over a old towel to catch the parts. When you get it apart you will see the pinion gear stuck on the end of the spool. Soak the pinion with penatrant for a day or two then wrap the pinion with a rag to prevent damage to the gear & grab  the pinion with pliers & with the other hand hold the spool & try to rock the pinion back & forth. Once it starts to move pull outward while still rocking the gear. Then its time to get out the emerey paper & wire brushes & clean everything up & grease it in & out. The reel probably hasn't been serviced in a long time.

Ok I'll give that a try.  I think I'll just order new bearings and drag washers and whatever else looks flakey and try putting it back together and see if that fixes it.

Thanks

Let me know how it turns out or if you need anymore help.   Rudy

Ok it came apart pretty well (shaft was stuck in the right side bearing).  I think I ended up with all the springs, etc.

It looks like the bearings are pretty stiff so I'm going to order new ones.  Do they come pre-greased?

The schematic says something about a different left side bearing for 'older' 113H reels, how do I tell if I need that one?

Where do I order parts from online including the Cal's grease for the drag washers?

Also, it has the 5 drag washers.  They look ok but should I replace them as well?  The last fiberglass drag washer is hard to get out of the gear is there a trick to getting it out without wrecking it?  Do I clean and re-grease them?

Other than that it looks pretty good inside.  Not real corroded or anything.  Going to hopefully get it working if I can get it back together correctly.

Thanks

The Cal's drag grease is available from Scott's along with any parts you need including drag washers. Try to dig out the last washer with an pick type tool bent at a 90 degree angle. The left bearing is not available any longer & the only way to use the new style is to replace the left plate which will not be a color match. Fill the bearing with good synthetic reel oil & see how it turns. You can also remove the plate on the bearing & grease it . Usually oiled for casting & greased for trolling. Scott's also has the Penn oil & reel grease & the cal's drag grease for the carbon fiber washers. If in doubt about the condition of the washers, replace them & grease them always with Cal's.       Rudy

The new bearing holder for the left side has a o ring seal. The older bearing holder does not. The bearings are replaceable in both. The old style holder is no longer made and if you need one its a parts reel or a new plate that takes the new one. If you still have the old one you can order new bearings from smooth drag or boca and change them out. Bob

The left bearing holder has an o-ring so that's a good thing I guess (new style???).

I'll see if I can get a replacement one.  I'm assuming you buy the holder and bearing as a unit since I don't see how you get the bearing out of there since you can't get behind it to press it out.

Do the bearings come pre-greased?  I'm using it for trolling.

By the way, I should have figured it was a bearing since it sounded just like the bad bearing on my outboard crankshaft when it started to go bad, ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

thanks guys!

Yes you do have the new style bearing cup.
These work like magic:

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

A lot cheaper to just buy one bearing with holder unless you have a lot of bearings to do.    Rudy

My bearings have shields on them so I'm not sure how I would get grease into the new ones.

Do they come pre-greased or just oiled?

Thanks again for all the info.  Couldn't have figured this out on my own!

RowdyW

I just fill the bearing & cup with reel oil & let them soak while I do all the other work. The longer the better. The oil will work its way into the bearings. Or remove the shield from one side & clean & grease it. If you damage the shield during removal & can't reinstall it just put it in with open side facing the bottom of the cup.    Rudy

To fill bearings with grease that's stuck in the cups, I press grease in the center with my finger until I can see it coming out of the inner race.  Not very hard to do.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

Ok that makes sense!

All the little tricks!

Thanks!

Hey guys,

I got the parts and it seems to be cured.  No more ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Thanks for the info!

One last question.  If I want to use 50 or 60 lb mono on that reel for halibut or albacore fishing, how many yards do you guys think I should get to load up that reel?

Thanks again
