I managed to snag 2 114H SS main gears and 1 SS 114H pinion today on e-bay for a decent price.
getting parts together to rebuild my 2 reels.

they are stainless steel and not plain steel?

I think those may be plain steel. I was about to pull the trigger on those just before Alan C. At black pearl gave me a call to let me know that the hex/SS gears will be a go. Now I just need a little patience until they are made. Those gears should do just fine. Good luck.

luck is the residue of design.

Even if they are plain steel, you're better off than brass. grease them up nicely and you're set.
Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

they were sold as SS, need to find a magnet i guess. still better than brass.

but some stainless steel is also magnetic, right?  see, this is where a pharmacy background is of absolutely no use!  :-\

Some ss is magnetic. The ss pinion Penn uses is magnetic.  Bob
