Maybe, but if you're fishing traditional IGFA style on a boat, then you could simply chase the fish.

You're probably right I was guessing because I thought it was a bit odd too .

I think both of us are correct to some extent, but why would someone fish w. 1000 yds of 6 lb test mono? 20 or even 15 would be so much better :-\.

I have caught several 8, 12, and 16lb line class records (YFT, Wahoo, Dolphinfish) and these fish can easily pull 500+yds off under 2-5lbs of drag.  Having a larger diameter reel with greater line capacity helps to negate spool diameter affects on drag as the line is payed out.  Good smooth, precise drags, a good fully rollered rod, and flawless connections are key components when fishing large pelagics on light line.  Boat, and rod/reel handling skills also come into play.
Hope springs eternal
for the consumate fishermen.

The fish were sounding I take it? Pretty cool having records. Its probably because I dont care about records, but I still just dont get it.

John, that's a very nice reel. I don't know how you find all the great reels you've shared. At least they have a home where they are appreciated! Thanks for sharing.  Bob

Thanks Bob.  The hunt has been a lot of fun for these special reels.
