It followed me home....honest Honey...I couldn't leave it out in the cold mean world.....
Trolling Craigslist I have been watching this Mitchell 600 and pole for about a month....offered him 50% of asking price and he took it......in speaking with the older gentleman on the history, he stated his father bought it for him so his father could catch more fish with two poles.  He stated they drove back and forth to Oregon from Sacramento in a brand new '64 T-Bird to fish salmon and he had it for a couple years before then...and last time he has fished was 1969....so maybe a 1962 vintage Mitchell?.....Im not sure but the grease inside was brown, sticky, and the line was WAAAAY stiff and long past it's prime....and yes it has the required cracks in the right side plate...

Notice the numbers on the star drag?

Stripped off old line..spool not looking too good.....hopefully Nevr-Dull comes to the rescue...

Inside looking MUCH better than the outside...that's old brown grease on the spool and gears...

All torn down and soaking in Mr. Clean cleaning fluid....about 75% strength

Everybody out of the pool and polished up.....

I plan on fishing this old workhorse....so gonna need a clamp set and some carbon fiber drags.....but all greased up, it sounds really good.......

I did find the Mitchell 600 a very easy reel to tear down and rebuild, than some Penn's...this was a fun reel to work on...now time to find a 600AP...back to C-List......Bill
It may not be very productive,
but it's sure going to be interesting!

You have her looking nice and shiny, it did clean up well. Will you be fishing it?

I have never seen one of these without a cracked sideplate.
Hi, my name is Lee and I have a fishing gear problem.

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

Yes, this will take a place in my rod/reel rotation.....I would like to add a rod clamp, the spacing is the same as a 112H, and some carbor fiber drags.  Can I use CF with the original brass washers?

Hi Bill --

Sure -- CFs greased with Cal's are just fine with the original brass discs.

I have maybe 4 or 5 of these in a box -- some wide, some narrow, some regular width -- different model numbers.

One has no cracks -- it should be a collectors item as a manufacturing mistake, since I believe the cracks and faded plates were an original Mitchell engineering innovation.

Some folks think they are worth a lot of money because they are Mitchell.  I have found the opposite to be true -- and even when offered cheaply, no one wants them if they have ever fished a Penn -- or tried to get parts for these.

However, they will catch fish -- makes a good back up -- or a Penn would make a good back up -- either way, have an extra reel set up and ready to go.

Great work on that restoration -- you know what you are doing.  Solid job.

Best,

Fred

Yes Fred does sound a bit swayed on Penn reels ;D

Would anyone know the line capacity of a 600?  The best I could find was someone claim "300meters of 50lb braid and 200 meters of mono".....not knowing what mono, I figured 30lb....and calculated to about 764 yards of 50 lb braid....the spool appears to be very close to a 200 Surfmaster, with the exception the 600 spool arbor (chromed brass) is about 7/16" and the plastic spool of my 200 is about 3/4"....According to the Line Estimator posted a while ago the 200 should hold about 545/ 50lb braid and the 600 about 754/ 50 lb braid......Im thinking this is about a 600 yard/ 50 lb braid reel.....any thoughts?  I recalculated the "mono" as 50 lb instead of 30 and the Line Calculator came back with 638 yards of 50 lb braid....maybe I answered my own question...

My Surfmaster 200 just took 300yds of 40# braid with about 100yds of mono backer. And that filled the spool nicely. That's 370meters
