Haven't been able to get out for Lings & rockfish due to the boats in my area having a bang up time with stripers right now (the bay is sick with them these days) so I got invited to a free trip as a guest of one of the SF wharf captains. On top of that I won the pot with the big fish and was able to shut up Capt. Tom from talking trash all week... "Tony, I'm a boat captain, I'll out fish you everyday of the week and twice on Sunday".
*The 2 fish I'm holding aren't even mine, we just grabbed the closest fish to take the shot, but just look at the local wharf rat gang, like a bunch of hooligans.

Yea Tony. Good Job. How about more details? Like which boat, where did you catch the fish? Dominick
Details, details,.. OK Don Dominick, you know I could never keep secrets from "the family".
Lovely Martha SF wharf- Capt Mike is a great guy.
Live bait bouncing the mouth of the Goldengate, the rockpile, and the Berkeley flats, windier than $#it out there.
Lamiglas tfx7830c inshore rod (extra fast) Avet SXJ MC with custom speed knob (Alan Tani custom mod) spooled with 45lb Suffix 832 braid
40lb mono leader tied to a 3/0 black chrome Danielson octopus hook above an 8 oz torpedo sinker
threaded through the nose of a California Pacific Anchovy (Engraulis mordax)
smoked turkey sandwiches, pepperoncini, San Pellegrinos and a Casa de Garcia Belicoso
Hooligans Indeed! ;D
Nice Fish!
Thanks Tony. My go to sandwich on a boat is peanut butter and jelly. It's not greasy , goes down easy even if I'm queasy. ;) Dominick
Dom, you gotta fish with me on my boat. As soon as I hear 'sssssss' in my ear from the wind, it's time to go in! ;D ;D And it's an open Whaler Outrage.
To hell with queasy I say.
Nice report OP!

Queasy?!! PB&J?!! I thought U were a tough ole barnacle, I also thought you would mention the Dominican cigar but maybe they're too low budget to an aficionado like you.
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. :-* Dominick
I think that might depend on what the definition of IS is. Sorry I couldn't resist Doug

Hey Doug I get perverse pleasure beating the censors (moderators). Google it. ;) Dominick
Yes Aiala you were posting as I was typing. I remember that one. Dominick
Looks like a good time for everyone. I'm surprised there are so many stripers and that they are even thriving out there. From what I remember, they were only initially stocked once and not even that many. I would have thought the inbreeding would have been an issue by now.
Great pic rockfish ninja, nice group of happy guys. The fish didn't look bad either.

I had to comment on this Dominick, simply because PBJ is my favorite sandwich especially when I'm fishing in a boat. It is beyond a doubt the best remedy for motion sickness and for settling an upset stomach. I have a PB&J on an English Muffin almost every morning.
I haven't caught one stinking stripier this year, Today was our third trip to the Navy pier and still no Stripe Bass Ruth is the only one catching fish and they are Fluke but so far they have been shorts.
tony, been hearing about the bite at the south tower. remember the days when people would belly right up the tower itself? man, the fish must be thick right in there. too bad homeland security won't let us fish that close anymore!
Joe, Joe from Bradley beach caught a 40lb striper at the Sea Bright inlet. Lots of fluke also. Dominick

Nah, they're almost pests by now, the DFG has a vote to lower the size limit to 16" I think and up to 3 fish bag limit. The best fighters in the area but I'd rather have something tastier like rockfish or cabezon.

Don't need to, they're in the surf, at the gate, the flats, all over the place. The regulars are scratching out legal fish every day out at the pier.

That's great Dominick! Last night only one 30" stripier was caught, Last week they were killing the strip Bass on 50lb-er was caught. I'm just not catching the right tide and time yet. We will score,we just have to keep at it. When you say Sea Bright inlet, do you mean the Manasquan inlet. That and the Shark River inlet are the only inlets in the area. There is no Sea Bright inlet. Ask Joe what he was using, plug or bait. I have been using bait Cut Bunker & Sand Worm. Plugging with soft bait and mettle. That seams to be what they are looking for in the Sandy Hook bay. Fluke are loving Buck-tail and Berkley Gulps in any color buck-tail.

Dominick: Which question was to many. ;D Now that makes more sense, where the other Joe was fishing. That is basically in the same body of water. Tonight we were on the pier and the bunker where as thick as carpet, you could almost walk on them...Blue fish were as thick as bunker 8#-15# Blues. We left early simply because we don't eat Blues and I hate loosing plugs to those BA$%#S. I lost two decent baits to short hits. If I wait for Joe to call the season will be over :D ;D

Newport I'm in Northern California on the peninsula 19 miles south of San Francisco. Joe (reel 224) and my fishing buddy are in NJ. We are referring to the area south of Sandy Hook at the Navasink River confluence. Dominick

Try the ocean side surf for those stripers! Night time is the right time
BTW - stupid plover birds have the false rip closed at Sandy Hook
Great Cali Stripers - glad to see they are doing well there for you!

Sandy Hook bay is where we are fishing, Off the Earl WS Pier. We got a late start this season for the Stripier bite so know we will concentrate on Fluke until Fall. I wish there was some Tog out there or Sea bass. I can't handle Head Boat fishing because of my knees, and Surf fishing is definitely out for me anymore. It's the pier or Manasquan Inlet or the PP Canal where I can sit and fish....sucks but I refuse to fall pray to my afflictions, I love fishing and so does my wife.
I usually fish the cape may area and sometimes further north to long beach island, but haven't really fished any further than that. I always thought about checking out sandy hook just to change things up a bit. I might of fished there when I was little. I only got two keepers this year, so it's been tough. Anyway, good luck on your pursuit.

Thanks newport, I think this season is finished but the fall season will give us a second chance. Fishing as most of us know is putting in your time and effort. We were late getting out there this spring and didn't get out as much as we should have. We should have more time in a few weeks.
Don't give up so quick Joe, I've caught some in the middle of August, not far from you.

Keep that line wet, you never know ;).

Yes they are but you have to follow them thru the system & cycle. Right now they're down out of the delta and at the beaches, open ocean, and the main part of the bay. In the fall they start heading up into the delta, thru the winter they spawn and reside up in the delta until spring when they voraciously pour down here again after slim pickings in their spawning grounds all winter. The late spring/early summer is the best bite.
Awesome.
Clue me in - when you say delta? How far of a migration is this?
Here the winter off VA beach and south and then head to Maine in the summer
We follow - but that is a long drive in both directions from PA
Also - is there much of a surf fishery like on the east coast or is it a boat only deal?

Take a look online at the SF bay area on google maps or equal, you'll see the whole migration from Rio Vista & Sacramento area all the way out to the ocean, they even go as far as Monterey,CA (south) and up the Coast to Russian river.
Actually you'll find that those bass might be more local than you think, I lived in Alexandria and Arlington VA, fished the Chesapeake many many times, and did the whole up & down the coast thing. From what I've been taught while I was there is that size sometimes dictates how far the go, some fish stay in the area, spawn in the bays/rivers and don't goo too far. As you know many of the bigger ones do make a big migration.
Shore fishing for stripers is big out here for surf out on the coast and (mainly) on the shores of the bay. The waves out here are 10 times as big & rough as the Atlantic areas I've fished, so you have to be good and have the right gear to do it. When I fished VA,MD, & NJ surf it was like fishing a lake to me, consider yourself fortunate in that respect.
Thanks man - I hear ya about the migration - I mange to catch those striped carp in most of their range all year round - just not the concentrations we get when the migration is on
