Title: You know you're a Reel-Head when......
Post by: Caranx on March 08, 2012, 08:43:19 AM
Okay, I'll start off with a couple:

1) Your favorite tool is an Alan Tani handle nut wrench, and you inscribe/engrave your name on it.
2) You build your own grease gun like Alan's.

Okay, one more
3) Your wash basin has a drain screen to catch the little parts from going down the drain.

I'll put one up for Alan:
You experiment with a dishwasher to clean an old cruddy reel!!!

I can't wait to hear what you all have to say!

Purchasing a reel just to tear it apart and see how it's put together.

Taking apart several reels and seeing what parts are interchangeable, even between different manufactures.  You can get in trouble fast doing this though.

Or buying a reel just because you're going through withdrawals cuz you haven't serviced a reel in a while. ;D

You have more reels in the gun safe than guns...

When you are at the shooting range you talk about fishing...

You hide your Penn Catalog next to the Victoria Secret's Catalog...

You plan your next business trip around when the next season opens...

You get caught trying to hide your last reel purchase from your wife...

You put more into a reel,, than the owner is willing to pay..

You observe a sick reel your buddy is using on a trip, and,try and figure out how you can convince him to let you take it apart on the boat..

After, you have all your own reels at "perfect",,, you keep messing with them...

When your girlfriend asks how the guys on Alan Tani are
When your mother asks if Alan Tani.com sells gift certificates for my birthday
When you sit in a lawyers office all day thinking about how to maximize a reel's capabilities when you really have a lot at stake and should be listening...ooops!

The list could go on, but all of these things happened this week to me :o

Thanks for a fun topic!

when you look at this website several times a day, and check ebay every day for frame kits, high speed gears, etc for reels that are going to be used basically three days a year for the annual halibut fishing trip.

Wow!!! I'm sicker than I thought. :o  If these are all symptoms then I must have a bad case. I already have the wrench, the grease gun, spend more money on parts and upgrades than the reels are worth, and when the wife just picked up the UPS delivery yesterday of two new reels I had just purchased, I had to tell her that they were just more reel parts. ;) And the scary part is I've been at this for less than a year. Not sure if I'll find a cure before I run out of money!

Oh, and your hands constantly smell like reel grease.

....Your wife ask "Why do you have so many reels/rods?" and you reply "Cause I can't afford more than one woman!"
....You just got a new reel and you stop at a traffic signal/stop sign to open the box and play with the free spool and in turn hold up traffic
....You wake up thinking of ways to improve your rod/reel combination instead of planning a day with family

When you keep checking the USPS website for delivery date and try to intercept the package before your wife gets a hold of it.

When you have to get rid of any evidence of purchase receipts.

When you take off the postage/shipping labels and hide the boxes until trash nite.

Start working on reels for money and the boxes slip right past the lovely wife, it works for firearms too.

Oh yeah, I forgot about those emails. They go straight down the black hole!
When my wife does receive the package before me, she gets the same old story from me "I got the reel dirt cheap and I can sell it for a good profit!" yeah right... Hardly any reel gets sold.  The bad buys just get put aside for extra parts or given away for free.

....When you can pinpoint the exact price a reel will sell for on Ebay days before the auction ends.

....When you catch yourself saying to...yourself, "wow, that guy really overpaid for that reel.  It was only worth $62, not $63.50"

And this brings me to a favorite saying by Mr. Winston Churchill talking about a fellow statesman that he didn't care for:

"He has none of the vices that I admire, and all of the virtues that I despise"  Or something like that.  Certainly taking apart reels is a vice worth having...no?

I took the rotating assembly to 113h (Bridge, gears, yoke, sleeve, dogs...) polished every part to a hi-shine and assembled it- have it sitting on my desk.  Several times a day I find myself just sitting there spinning the gears in my hand while I think.   It is very satisfying. I love the way the complete assembly looks, the way it sounds and feels in my hand as I spin it. It seams to be therapeutic and  I swear it helps me think better. (I need all the help I can get)

I should have bought ten sheets from you! :) I did actually smudge it with cals! Although I want to try fisherman and the Studio ocean mark drag grease but I can't seem to ever buy any... and I never have problems with cal's. Cutting and grinding carbon fiber sure is fun but it itches like hell on my underarms! :)

But I do wonder one thing. maybe somebody is able to help me out! On aftermarket handles and clem's drag plate, dog bracket etc the CF has a shiny hard feel to it. Is it coated with something? varnish?

1-When you cruise flea markets & garage sales, and the first thing out of your mouth is "Any fishing stuff?"
2-When you rank reels in your top 3 things in life. (ie: for me it's -girls, guitars & fishing gear)
3-When you have one special reel that you - use a reel cover, treat like crystal, have not scratched it yet since you bought it, and would bawl like a toddler when/if you do. (Hey don't laugh, I have one) ;)

...and lastly, the only true indicator........

.................YOU WANT MORE REELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have your "reel of the month" or "newest build" handy right next to your lazy-boy chair and you grab it during tv commercials and start admiring or fiddling with it. Your wife walks by and doesn't even care or she's immune to it all.

Once for two weeks and another short four day trip.

Since the subject of wives came up earlier, I need to get some advice from you guys about a  serious problem:
I have suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me...  the usual signs: if the phone rings and I answer, the caller hangs up; she goes out with the girls a lot, I try to stay awake to look out for her when she comes home but I usually fall asleep.  Anyway, last night about midnight I hid in the shed behind the boat. When she came home she got out of someone's car buttoning her blouse, then she took her panties out of her purse and slipped them back on...  It was at that moment, crouched behind the boat, that I noticed a hairline crack in the outboard engine mounting bracket. Is that something I can weld, or do I need to replace the whole bracket?
Title: Re: You know you're a Reel-Head when......
Post by: Tightlines667 on April 19, 2014, 02:40:52 AM
Lol...
Don't think you can weld cast alum.  Though I admit this is not my specialty.  As far as the wife thing goes...can't really offer much advice there either, since I've litterally got no real world experience with either.  Good luck!  Might involve a bit more work then anticipated?

When you have a therapy reel that you have just to hold and crank (my squidder 140, red side plates, red handle, and red plastic spool with all the metal parts buffed down to brass).

Also when all of the local reel repair shops inform you they are all outta bearings, and Bellevilles for all 80 and 130 reel models since I am using them faster then their orders have been filled.

Cast aluminum welds fine, just make sure it's very clean.  Grind to the bottom of the crack, and fill with weld.

It's cast iron that's problematic to weld.  Not impossible, just takes special procedures and precautions to do properly.

It won't help, because we keep moving along. I stopped messing with mine, I'll put them back together when we're done with upgrades. I'm wondering if we're ever going to hit a dead end :-\.

By the way, I just tested a jigmaster with a Derlin washer under the gear and one on top of the drag stack, right below a keyed washer.
That reel reeled in 20lbs smooth as silk, by turning the handle.

I have a spreadsheet, recept books, emails, texts, posts, many random pages in notebooks, and even a few tagged reels to try to keep it all straight....and I consider myself to be pretty organized.  Someday I'll get my spreadsheet up to date with everything.

I like the idea there of islolating the main gear/drag stack with those slippery Delron washers.  Not surprised to hear the reel is smoother and is not experiencing any handle binding issues at higher settings.  I can't wait to strat experimenting myself.

The boat was too large to be towed by that car. The boat was 29' Jersey Skiff & she needed 3'-3 1/2' of water to float her.

You know you are a reel head. When you get nervous when you get down to your last couple of grams of "Cals Grease". Or You are cleaning out the Shed (to repair reels in) and find a pair of broken scissors and start picturing Anti reverse dogs. It is confirmed when you return with some verniers to Measure the thickness. (damn to thin) :) ;) :D ;D

You constantly have at least two reels on the Kitchen Table that need servicing. I consider it the Centerpiece! ;) And Handles and drag washers, and whatever else I just got in the mail. This is mild, I usually have more than half of the table taken up at any given time! ::) It usually is only clear if Company is coming over.

Mhc, you never know until you ask, but sometimes you are lied to.  In this case it was literally a litter box. Now here's the real story about lying.  Whenever Erik would meet a Fijian they would say "Bula."  When Erik asked what that meant they told him it was a happy greeting like aloha in Hawaii.  Hey Erik they lied to you.  All those years they have been calling you an (expletive deleted).  :D :D  Dominick

You spend 5 hrs getting things tuned just right, to go fishing in a drawn down lake, with four rods and reels,  to fish for planter trout, that you don't catch, and walk out feeling good because all the reels worked to perfection.

My wife grabbed my phone right out of my hands today,  she started searching through the photos, It was obvious she was ticked off,  I asked her what she was doing?  She said I heard you  talking to one of your friends earlier!  And I just want to see what the "pretty little thing from tiburon" looks like!  So I showed her
And I have only been on AT for a week?  THIS PLACE SHOULD HAVE ITS OWN MSDS,  a warning sign or flashing light anything to warn the poor and unsuspecting, there usually no fun anyway!
It bought my wife a fishing boat for our 35th anniversary.
it was a surprise!  Oddly she never uses it?
We're together 41 yrs now and I love her boat!

Just the opposite in my case -- I count on the pearls of wisdom from the East Coast guys every morning.

Got up at 4:30 this morning -- had coffee -- drank some water -- went for a two-mile 30 minute walk with Sue -- warmer this morning, 40 degrees -- back home at 6:00 -- still dark -- just starting to get light now at 6:30 -- checked the stealth night cam for visitors -- popped the SD card in my iPad -- couple of foxes -- Sue feeds them dog food every night, and they now have names...one is Eat, the other is Run -- now I check the AT site for smart comments from the East Coast as I have my second cup of coffee.

Of course, with the World Wide reach of Alan's site -- there are 24 time zones -- always something going on.

Best,

Fred

You know you're a Reel-Head when......you buy a duplicate used reel (a model of which you already own) to go through and repair as a backup because your thinking about taking #1 down for repairs. You don't want to be without a working reel for that one specific
task. And another is never a bad thing!  ;D -g
