I started working on a project with a fellow Alan Tani crew member/machinist about a year ago. We've battled limited access to machinery and very busy schedules, but I am finally ready to announce a limited upcoming production run of (45) 9/0 frames. I should be receiving delivery in about a months time as they are currently with the anodizer. The lot is anticipated to consist of a 50/50 split of both black and silver frames. The black is a guarantee, I am awaiting confirmation on the silver. It will be a half frame, much like some Tiburon frames currently on the market. You will only need a single cross bar/post from your existing 9/0. It will also come with a reel clamp kit. I won't be testing this frame on the newer H2 Series 9/0 because I don't own one and neither do most of you. Therefore, I can not guarantee fitment, though it should still work. However, Accu-plates will NOT fit this kit.
When I make them available they will be sold on a first come, first serve basis, one per customer for one week. If any stock remains after the one week window I will post the remaining quantities and colors on the same first come, first serve, one more per customer buyer policy that existed during week one until all stock is depleted.
This has never been a money making venture for me, it is more of a "pay it forward" project. I have been inspired by many of the Alan Tani "mentors" and I am simply looking to follow their lead. As soon as I receive notification that the frames are on the way to me i"ll take my tally at that point. I believe this is going to help with Alan C's new monster gears. Unfortunately, I will only be shipping to the lower 48 states. If you plan on purchasing for an AT member outside the lower 48 they (the additional party) must PM me personally to confirm their request. In this instance only I will honor orders with a quantity greater than one.
To address the cost question, I don't have an exact figure but it's looking around $100-$115. As I said....not a get rich quick project.
Thank you,
Dom
P.S. Alan Chui and I have spoken.
OK, so this is to be a separate run from Alan's, correct?
Yep
Wow Dom! Good for you!! I don't have any 9/0's but if I did.....good luck with this.

Bob: Daron made you a pretty decent offer. Go for it. You're making feel bad. ::) I searched ebay for a 9/0 and there are some nice ones.
Dom, put me down for one in silver. Dominick
Wow Dom... NICE !
ya know, if I REALLY enforced that 30day limit on uncollected refurbished reels.... ;)
I'd have beauty of a candidate for this frame.... muaahhhh ;D ;D
... Daron must be in bed already.. :D
Well Domain count me in for a silver on. Better grab it while they're available. Then it will be time to get another 9/0.
congratulations!!!!!!
Just taking a Nap Eric. I fell asleep on the couch after the Steelers kicked the Bengals butts. That was disappointing. >:( I'm down for one or two of the Silver Dom. I wish I knew for sure if we were getting the full frames from Chui. This is really a stand up thing to do offering them to us at such a great price.
You are my new Hero Dom! ;)

Dominick, no worries. I don't need any more projects then I have started ;) I wouldn't fish it anyway. Those are for the big boys. I'm just hotrodding all these reels to catch bait ;D
Bob
Ok Bob,
That deal was just for you buddy. No more sellers remorse! ;)
I'll take a black. Be a good excuse to get another 9/0 if I get a full frame to.
Those of you who are looking forward to this frame unveiling as much as I am... I've got an update for you. First, I'd like to tell you who I've ask to produce these frames for us. It's none other than Tom Hryniuk. Those of you who have purchased his squidder or jig master frames know that he's a magician with a CNC machine. He's really been trying to bring high quality to this project, so I'll wet your whistles a bit with some tasty facts about the frame. Tom has informed me that we're waiting on color samples of the type II and type III silver to come back because the type III silver has a tendency to show up darker, more like a gunmetal. The black anodizing will be the hardest available (type III.) The other trick feature Tom has done for us is he's made the reel foot one piece with the rest of the frame much like the old Accu-Frames.
I'll keep you guys posted as I am informed. I appreciate the positive feedback and it's been a pleasure working with Tom.
Many thanks to Alan Tani for none of this would be possible without you!
Thanks,
Dom
You got me drooling Dom! :P
The Gunmetal sounds Awesome!!! ;D
Dom,
I think you should ask B.Y. to move this posting under the Senator section. Therefore, it will have more people to read this posting.
Thanks,
--Alan
Now I know why Tom has been fairly silent over the past few months.
Good to see Penn parts being "made with pride in the USA" again. Well done broadway.
Anything that Tom Hryniuk makes, I need to have. The man is a genius.
Put me down for Two Dom, silver and black ;)...Thanks!
Dom,
I would like one black frame.
Thanks,
John
Dom,
This is a great offering from you..and Tom! Thanks for bringing this to the table.
My 1st choice is the Gunmetal. If not gunmetal, then Black.
I'm in !
I'm chompin' at the bit for one of these Dom and Tom Frames. :P
Are we going to do the paypal thing Dom? Or just a check return?
I can't wait to see pics! ;)
Sharky,
We're gonna go with money orders and checks I believe. I've had some pretty bad paypal experiences.
I'll try to send someone photos to post here when I get a shot. I don't have any completed photos, but Tom sent me some of the unanodized machined frame.
I've been chompin' so long I need dentures ;D
Thanks
Dom
Thanks Erik... Keep you guys posted on the ano colors and frame progress as I'm told.
Hi All,
Just wanted to give the specs on Dom's frame kit.
It's a hybrid half frame that will use a single Penn crossbar to pin the top harness lugs.
It comes with a rod clamp and SST mounting hardware
We are providing a new Penn chrome over brass crossbar. If you want to upgrade to a SST crossbar, MysticParts has them in stock.
There are two color options, Black and polished Silver.
The Black is Type III hard Anodize, and the Silver is a bright Silver that you all are used to.
The Type III Silver or gun metal color didn't work out.
They will fit both the Made in U.S.A. and the L2 reels. While it may look odd, you can also run the Accurate sideplates
if you are lucky enough to own a set. The sides of the harness lugs will show, causing the odd look.
Happy Holidays everyone!
Tom
"Edited as per Moderators to correct Scott's Bait & Tackle over to their new store name Mystic Reel Parts / www.mysticparts.com"
Tom, I'm dying to see what these frames look like, do you have a pix you could post? It doesn't have to be anodized.
Thanks! Sal

Thanks for posting the photos, Tom... It's still a pain in the neck from my Mac ???
Sal, much like you, Tom doesn't do anything half-arsed... that's why I went to him ;)
All the best,

Well like i said i am definitely down for one. Make it a silver for me.
Wow! That polished silver looks Sexy! Good Job Tom! :P
Hey Crew,
Tom has given me a progress report that I'd like to pass on...
The frames will be shipped to me by the end of the week. At that point I'll post a "Come and get it" topic,
so you can PM me your order and shipping info. I will also post the set price at that time.
Due to my work schedule I will only be shipping on Thursdays or Fridays during the week, but if you need a rush delivery
I'll do what I can. Hope you guys are as excited to see Tom's creation as much as I am!
For those of you who sent me a PM or posted their order on this topic, please refresh my memory when the time comes.
Thanks,
Dom
I'm refreshing your memory NOW Dom! :o
Thank You for the update. Silver for me. :P Very Excited about this! ;D
Refreshing...one silver please.
That is a beauty Tom. Kind of making me wish I had a 9/0 reel.

Hahaha, I do just fine rock fishing with my Abu 6500C3 with 20# braid and my ProGear 255 with 50# braid for larger game.
I'm sure Albert could show you the way. ;)
Hey Dom..... REFRESH !! ;D ;D
I'm in for a black one bro.
This frame will keep the inner trim rings, right?
p.s.- I hope all your heaters are working! and keep an eye on the older folks around ;)
Bryan, We could always use another reel... why ask why? ;)
Erik, Yes, inner trim rings are still necessary. It's gonna get medieval out tonight!
Thanks
Dom
It warmed up to Zero here today! The wind chill was only -25 F last night. 8)
That's Medieval enough for me! :P
Thank god you guys don't live in Minnesota !
Daron, It's still not as cold as the Freeze Bowl in '82 is it? ;D

It was +4 at JFK Airport this morning. Wind was blowing 20 - 35 MPH. Can't wait for the Super Bowl.

I was a Junior in High School Eric, but Yes, I do remember. I think yesterday was as cold as it been since that day.
Right after we lost the playoff game to San Diego on Sunday is when The temps started to drop. Once it gets below 10 degrees or so, it doesn't matter. Its still cold as Hell! :o
I can remember it as well. I was only 8. I grew up in MN, and do not miss the severely cold weather there, though I do miss the ice fishing.

With the old way of calculating wind chill back then it was -60 in the papers. But now it's recorded as -37.
Yeah, I was a freshman then, my dad took me to the game for my birthday...it was Jan 10 '82.. weird coincidence eh?
a replay almost to the day from 32 yrs ago.... Only that year we CRUSHED the Chargers..... and Bengals were AFC champs!
the boys were hard core then, i bet the NFL wouldn't even play a game in those conditions anymore
I'll let wikipedia tell a quick story:
Before the Chargers took the field, Running back/Special teamer Hank Bauer tested the field conditions. Bauer recalled: "when I came out of that tunnel... man, it (the wind) just hit you-like somebody threw 100 knives at you." When he returned to the locker room, he told his teammates: "Whatever you got on, take it off. Number one-you won't be able to move (with all the layers) and number two-it ain't gonna help."
The Bengals offensive line played the entire game with bare arms. A number of them played with bare hands as well. They placed hot water bottles inside their cups (athletic supporters) and between plays they walked around with their hands in their pants which many people found amusing.[citation needed] It was so cold icicles started to form on Fouts' beard early in the game.
Within one week, the Chargers went from playing an overtime game in Miami in 88 degree, high humidity weather to playing in the −37 wind chill in Cincinnati, an effective difference of 125 degrees.
-------
It was minus 9 F that day at Riverfront and the windchill "of the time" and the way it's remembered by everyone it was minus 60 degrees!
Crank up that heat and keep your backup ready buddy !
Cheers from steamy Fiji... were I've been sweating since dawn :o :o

Whoops.... AND NOW back to our 9/0 topic ;D ;D

It should be complete this upcoming week and shipped to me late in the week.
I will let yas know as I get the updates.

Broadway,
I was not clear. My 9/0s are not the graphite frame models, just the old style posts. But they were made in China, not the USA. I just don't know if the later Chinese made 9/0s would work with these frames. I don't know why they would not, but people criticize the made in China Penns, so I just assume there is some difference.
At the risk of being sent to Angler's hell, what would be tougher, this frame with L2, this frame with made in USA of recent vintage, or a Daiwa 900/910? Drag grease for all of course.
Bill,
I understand your question and some parts are different between the original and L2 versions but none that effect the outer dimensions that I know of.
JA,
I never fished or owned a Daiwa 900 or 910, but think you'll find this adequate if not equivalent.
I bet if you "tank" it, it will be better... And it's already better because it's a senator;)
Thanks
Dom

With the Hex drags and this frame. The Daiwa can't hold a candle to this Beast!
Is there any chance of some topless 12/0 frames in the future?
Hey guys, I want to remind you about the bashing of brands without objective evidence. This is what our site is gounded on.
No Bashing bro! ;) Just the facts. 55 lbs of drag vs the 35 lbs of the 900H, plus the spool capacity, plus the Black Pearl ss Helical cut Gears with Hex drags, plus the stainless sleeves and dogs with your ss springs, plus the Keta Kranks , Dom and Tom Frame. ;D
The 900H is a fine reel. With GS starting the Hex Drags, and the Aluminum frame and end plates stock, its just a matter of time. ;)
My Son chose the Daiwa over the 9/0. :'(
We will see come May who's reel wins ;)

Good point, Bryan. Let's not make this into a "Ford vs. Chevy" type discussion.
Hello, and thanks to Mr. Tani for permitting me to join the forum.
I am hoping to get in line (at the back, of course) for one of the Senator 9/0 frame kits when they become available. (I'm currently trolling eBay for a decent used 15L, which I plan to use on a multi-day trip this summer.) Since the various new high-tech reels (Accurate, Tiburon, Avet) are beyond my budget, I'm gradually upgrading my old reliable Penn standbys, which have never let me down in the past. :)
~A~
Aiala, great of you to join this merry bunch of misfits. :D
We have a lot of Penn FINatics and you are in good company.
Aila,
First off, welcome aboard! ...and actually your more towards the middle of the list ;)
I find it much more rewarding catching on an old Senator than some new fangled, modern reel anyway.
Stay tuned for the unveiling...
Tom has given another progress report, and I've been assured the frames will be headed my way by weeks end, so we are very close with this one, crew!
Looking forward to bringing these to the table for you guys.
Thanks
Dom
Welcome Aiala! ;D
Come on in and Enjoy Yourself! ;)
I'm not sure who was bashing in this case. I'm pretty sure that was just an opinion and not a dig at Daiwa. After all, this site has a bit of a bias, as a whole towards our beloved Penn reels... Or have you guys been duping me this whole time ;D
Keep it clean, funny, and factual ;)
Thanks
Dom
Welcome, Aiala!
I hope it doesn't hurt anyone's feelings but let's not get all over sensitive, to many people nowadays are and it's just sad :'(
Bula Aiala and welcome!
Hey, Shark Hunter, did you get 55 lbs from your 9/0?

Note, it has nothing to do about sensitivity. Our site is based on actual experiences and results before making product statements. We have kept brand loyalty comments and brand bashing at bay. If we didn't, this would be just another internet site. There are a lot of other places you can do that...and let's not become one of those sites.
I see, that's quite a bit for a 9/0. I'd be worried about twisting the frame too.
I would like to be added to the wait list please.

Kirk

I'm going with a black frame. I'm getting all the chrome parts powder coated gloss black to match the frame. It's gonna be one bad #### blacked out reel

Mr. Shark, I know! Now all I need is a 9/0; luckily there's one for auction today on eBay that I'm determined to win... I hope... <fingers crossed>. (http://forums.snapstream.com/vb/images/smilies/wink.gif)
~A~
Just don't pay too much. $110 is my Max and that's only if it is pristine with the rod clamp and brace.
Stay away from the three piece spool too. You want a one piece spool, Chromed bronze or aluminum, with bearings.
I'm going to try $100. I like the aluminum spool because of weight considerations, but this particular 15L doesn't have bearings... hmm. :(
~A~
If its an Aluminum spool, it has bearings. That spool won't fit a bushing model. The handle side will show a definite ball bearing and the right side is adjustable with a bearing inside.

does the new frame even accommodate them?
and are they still even "needed" with the new frame?
my 9/0 doesn't have them anyway...so I'm just asking....
Ahem... allow me to Bump this question again... ;D
You don't miss a trick, Do you Erik. ;D
After evaluating the pictures, I think this is how its going to work. The harness lugs are sandwiched in between the rings in the plates. On page 3, Dom says the inner trim rings are still needed, so I think we are good.

Yes we are. Now if I can just brake the ice on a Mako, Hammer Head, and a Tiger this year, It will all be worth it.
I change my mind!!! I want silver.
Right Daron ! Nice new face by the way... 8)
I'm still interested to know how many of you are still going to use front rod brace on your new frame.
And I'm hoping maybe Tom could share with us his thoughts too on how necessary (or not) the braces will be
considering the mods & the higher drag settings we all have access to now.
I'm really curious.
Glad you won your bid Aiana !
I know I'll be keeping the rod braces. It will just give me peace at mind. Plus I think it would look a little funny having the empty spaces between the side plate and inner ring. I mean you would have to really get close to notice it but I would still know lol

Chris: Someone on the site solved that problem by buying the braces for the Baja Special and turning them upside down.
Bula Dom, are you going to fish your 9/0 with the braces?
Yes I just love the look.
Hi all,
Yes, the inner rings are needed.
The 9/0 only uses one rod brace, and yes, it's functional. The other set of lugs are for a fighting belt harness.
The rod brace is captured by the frame in front, and the harness lugs on top are captured by the supplied new crossbar
like the original top crossbar.
I would use the rod brace especially if you are using a harness and /or modding the reel beyond spec. The clamp as well for that matter.
I will try and post some pics of the Made in USA, china, and the Accurate reels with a new frame later today.
Tom
Thanks for the update Tom.
Yes,
Brace for me too Eric.
Roger that, thanks guys, and thank you for chiming in Tom.
I'll need to order up a brace.
Can't wait to see those frames!
Here's a few more pics, I'm showing an Accurate kit in case anyone only has sideplates.
As you can see, the lugs are visable but still functional.

The "duh" is on me now! ;D
Well, I finally received the 9/0 I bought on eBay, and it is a glorious mess which will, in addition to tweaking my OCD tendencies to the max, efficiently transfer sizeable chunks of my savings to Scott's Penn Parts Dept. Aside from that, though, I feel like a dumb cluck for missing a telltale clue –clearly visible in the photo– which indicates that the reel was previously worked on by some inept character who didn't know what the <bleep> they were doing. So now, in a little angling version of Where's Waldo, which of you sharp-eyed gents can be first to spot the flaw I missed? (http://querytracker.net/forum/Smileys/default/adoh3.gif)
~A~
The eccentric lever being backwards is no big deal. Its usually an easy fix.
The eccentric lever is on backwards. The only time I've seen that is like you said... Inept reel tinkerer or the outer ring didn't fit properly on the side plate making it impossible to re-attach the lever the proper way.
I have faith in ya, you can get that baby purring.
Good luck with it,
Dom
Bada-bing!
Shark and Dom nailed it. (Why am I not surprised??) :D

Always a sure sign the reel needs a complete overhaul.
I know you will have it up and running soon. ;D
This is quite common, see link below

You are right Dom. The problem tinkerers have is that they hook up the spring on the eccentric then try to get the eccentric lever on. Oops it doesn't go on, I guess I have it backwards, oh yeah that's right the knob must face out or it won't go on. Alan took care of that in one of his earliest tutorials. You grasp the loose end of the spring and snap it into place after the eccentric lever is in place. Dominick
One of my very first posts on here was this same problem. I bought a reel that had it on backwards, I took it apart and put it on backward again. :P We all have to start somewhere and that's what this site is all about! ;D Turning the Inept tinkerer into a knowledgeable reel builder and pay it forward! ;D
Knowledgable reel builder???? I know JUST enough to be dangerous ;)
Yes, the triple tank is definitely Dangerous! :o
Ok, "More than Inept tinkerer" sounds better. ;)

I appreciate the encouragement, and shall certainly give it my best shot. Besides, as the saying goes, it's an ill wind that blows no good. Some helpful soul had posted elsewhere about polishing a reel's metalwork with a Dremel tool, and, well, that was right up my obsessive alley, so of course I immediately went out and bought one --along with a can of Mothers polish-- and now I can't wait to try it! :)
~A~
I've bought at least half a dozen reels with the lever on backwards, including some shimanos .
Make sure you polish outdoors Aiala and wear an apron. The polish goes everywhere. Use as little as you can get away with, or you will be wearing most of it. ;)

Parking lots?? In the city?? I think I need to have a talk with Dom.
I bet Dom is raking is some serious change plowing those lots! ;)
Hey guys,
Dominick is 100% correct... It's been a long week and I'm also painting my apartment at the same time. I will be posting the "come and get it" tomorrow evening at the latest. Tom did a beautiful job and I'll be proud to send his artwork out to the AT Crew. My posting will be in the member tackle for sale section in the forum.
The weather made it so I was unable to pick the frames up until Thursday afternoon even though they were delivered on Tuesday. Sorry for the inconvenience but I'll think you'll be pleased with the outcome.
Thanks for your patience,
Dom
Huzzah! ;D
As I await the arrival of my beautiful silver frame, and being thoroughly obsessed with the aesthetics of my reels, I am wondering if anyone can tell me how to restore some luster to the weathered bakelite of my 9/0 sideplates? (I tried using car wax, which accomplished exactly nothing.) :-[

Huh... fascinating! Thank you very much; off I go for some good ol' Kiwi. I'll report on results. :)
~A~
Aiala,
I don't use anything on my plates. I know you are not supposed to use armor all or products like that. After I rebuild a reel, There is usually Grease all over it from applying it to the post and stand holes and from screwing the bridge down, I usually get it pretty much all over. I figure the more grease I apply, the less chance of corrosion getting into the reel. I use a brush and put it under the rings and coat the inside of the plates. I'm not blobbing it there, just trying to give everything a nice thin coat. I wear disposable gloves I am so messy with it. After I screw he bridge on, I put some around the main gear and rotate it, especially if the gears are steel. After I get it all buttoned up. I dry it off the best I can to get the grease off, usually with a soft shop cloth, and Wala! Shiny Plates! ;D I only use Penn Blue grease. I'm sure some don't approve of this method, but it works for me. :D
(http://i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag93/darondyer/IMG_21871_zpse8e4aed6.jpg)
Not saying grease won't work but I use Penn Rod & Reel Cleaner it does a nice job. I have rebuilt reels for people & they thought that I gave them a new reel. One squirt per side & rub it in with your hand. With or without a glove. Just wipe off excess.
I'll try that Mike, when my grease wears off. ;)
Daron
I the case of your size reels it might take 2 squirts

Do they sell it by the Gallon? ;)
Buenos Dias!
That's a gooood looking 9/0
I've been rubbing Cals on my plates under the impression that the teflon based grease is easier on the plastic than other petroleum based greases. I just scrub a tiny bit in with a toothbrush and rub off any excess...just like a lever drag washer.
It really works wonders on older graphite reels (TLD's) that go gray with age. really shines them up!
Yes they do
You have to be careful of the plates swelling. I use black shoe polish and a shoe brush. Bryan's idea. Dominick
How about I send you a couple plates and some shoes. Shine boy! :D

Goodfellows. That one is too easy. Nobody plays a nut like Joe Pesci. Frank Vincent a major wise guy puts down Joe Pesci with that line. My wife's daughter was in the wedding scene when they are putting the envelopes in the white satin bag. You are too young to have witnessed the procession to the bride and groom and the "La Busta." It was done at every wedding when I was growing up. Dominick
It was Goodfellas, Shine Boy! Spit shine Tommy is what Frank said to Joe Pesci before he and Deniro killed him.
What is "La busta"? I know Busta Rhymes :D

A straight translation is "the envelope." There is no translation for the underlying meaning of paying respect to the parents of bride and groom. Sometimes Italians complicate things. Dominick
hey, we've all got a little italian in all of us! ;D

Well, we know who is Dom's favorite for sure now. ;) Now we need to get those pinions from Chui so I don't have to take mine back apart again. Looking Good Sal! ;D
I'm glad you guys and gals are happy with the frames that have been received so far and can't wait for the rest of the comments to roll in, as I'm very confident of the quality and fitment of Tom's frame to the 9/0.
Bill, pm me if you're interested or have any questions.
Daron, don't forget... Sal runs the R&D department ;)
Ron, I'm not sure of what kind of trade off it would be... One piece foot with half frame or 2 piece full frame. I wouldn't know which would be able to sustain a higher drag, but someone on here would know that for sure. I don't think there's a 9/0 gear made (aftermarket or eom) that can damage either one. :-\
Thanks Crew,
Dom
Just for my own peace of mind, to make sure that I'm not doing something idiotic, can someone kindly tell me what size screws (by Scott's part number) I should be using to attach the sideplates to my new frame?

Gator Color scheme is what i am thinking of going with.
Heres the ides running through my head. Powder coat the rings and top post blue. Then get a 3k-5k oranage with some detail brushes and detail the engraving the come on the side plates and protect it with a high UV high gloss clear coat. The black and silver should give it a beautiful contrast. What do ya'll think.

Sal, yes, but they are pretty badly chewed up. Whoever had this poor reel (obviously a nitwit) must've turned them out with a chisel... and then re-attached the eccentric lever backwards. I'm tellin' ya, some people...! >:(

Yeah, I know. It's okay, though, because I derive great satisfaction from resurrecting a reel that has been abused almost to death.
Nice score on that gold frame!! Now if only someone would offer a <bleeping> left-hand sideplate for my Mag Power 980...) 8)

Tom, I just love your work. By the way, if you are going to make another run, would it be possible to lower the from cross bar even more? There are a few reels that I have worked on that even with the cross bar being as low as it is, there are line groves due the the line angle with a bent rod. Just wondering if the front could be like the rear to eliminate this? Just wondering.
Lol, I saw that 9/0 listed and saved it to my watch list to see how long it would take to sell. As I suspected, not long at all on a deal like that.
The funny part is that I know both the seller and buyer of this frame that was used as a model for the DomTom frames. love it!
Dom
Bryan,
The nice part is that it's not made of aluminum so it shouldn't get any grooves and the fact that it's round should help with that, also.
Thanks
Dom
Nice work!
I'd like to see a pic of the completed reel when available, if possible.
I suspect the black side plates will really set off that gold color :)

But Bryan, if I make the front cross bar like the rear one, everyone will mount their reels backwards and blame me!!!! ;D
All jokes aside, if there is a need, I'll consider it. I just don't want to go thru another revision and prototype if there isn't a need.

Thanks for a good laugh. I never though about it that way.
I thought you were talking about the oem penn crossbar. The rest of the frame is aluminum. You must have been talking about the lower crossbar. I don't think it's worth re-doing as I've never seen a rod with a 9/0 bend enough to cause a problem. If that's an issue for you or others maybe a piece of electrically tape would help when your fishing for monsters. I also wonder if balance will be thrown off if a change was made.
Thanks
Dom
I thought you had no use for a 9/0 ???

Question. Why can't you mount the frame the other way?? I accidentally put in on backwards when I installed it the first time and everything still lined up perfectly. I then quickly changed it so I didn't look like an idiot when I posted pictures lol
Chris,
You can turn it around... I do it to my tiburon frames for wire lining when I'm not paying attention... no harm, no foul.

You might not want to do this on larger reels, the line might slice your hand or the foregrip of the rod. :-\
Penn's are lower than the spool hub on smaller reels and go up gradually as you increase the reel size. On the 6/0 the frame post is level with the spool hub, as the reel increases the frame post gets higher...Just an observation. That said, I like mine as they are ;)

Looks good to me Aiala! ;D
I'm thinking of doing mine this way too. ;)
You go, girl! ;D
Well done, backwards or not... it'll do what ya need it to.
Enjoy anilin' the big ones on her.
Dom
Well, after sleeping on it, and reflecting upon what a dingbat I am ( :-[) I concluded that the guys were correct, and the frame was on backwards. So, I reversed it and now all is as it should be.
I think I know why I got mixed up: I have a Tiburon T4W frame for my 113HLW, and it has the lower bar profile, but unlike the Dom/Tom frame, on both ends. Well, I failed to notice that, and erroneously followed suit and oriented my new frame with the low bar in front... DUUHHHHHH!! :o
Still, this isn't the first time I've managed to end up backwards, upside-down, inside-out, or all three. As the saying goes, "Live and Learn"; (or in my case, don't). Whatever, it's all good! :D

I almost put mine together the same way, too. :D
Ya know I was thinking. If you have a tall enough stripper guide on your rod then you wouldn't have any problems with line touching the fore grip or your fingers. I really do like the reverse mount look.
A Winthrop roller guide rod is in order here. It keeps the line high. ;)

Aiala, I like the look! The only reason I won't copy you is that I don't want the high bar in the back to get in the way of applying a little thumb to the spool, especially during the fight.
Dom, I received mine today. I'm writing the check now. Thanks so much. It really is a beautiful piece of work. And so light!!
Just finished the change over. Great product. You guys should be proud.
What? No Picture? >:(
Come on Bill. ;)
Got your check, Bill.... now I'm gonna buy those Pina Coladas with it ;)
On my way to the airport now... take care crew!
Dom
Ok, trying to attach three photos...
I guess I did it. First was the before picture, the second was halfway through the project and the last is the finished product. My reel had the five drag stack with the HT 100 drag washers, so cleaning and greasing was all I did. On my reels, I can access the drags from the side without breaking down the reel, so if I want to go to a 7 drag stack I can do that in the future.
Good job Legal Bill. Thanks for the photos. Dominick
Looks Good Bill! Thanks for sharing! ;)
Ok, now you're legal, Bill ;)...thanks for sharing.
Sal
Good job Bill. First of many ill bet
Hey, thanks for all the support guys. Up until this reel I had disassembled many Penn reels, but the reassembly was all about cleaning, replacing worn parts, and greasing everything up. Other than upgrading the drag washers, this was my first modification. I was a bit nervous about it. Now I need to order another frame kit. :D
Well crew, I'm signing in from Jamaica now. I only have a minute because the fiancé is getting her hair ready to go out for dinner.
Bill, nice job on the 9/0 frame mod, and I'm glad you like the finished product. That's what it's all about... Feeding our habit :D
Thanks for the compliment, but all I did was motivate Tom a bit, and he did the rest. It's nice having a quality machinist on our team isn't it ;)

I used Gun Kote. The rings were in bad shape. My air compressor died a while back and I haven't fixed or repaired it. When I do I'll sand blast them and redo them. I'm not proud of the way they came out. Bob

Oh, I sure hope that this was more than just a "break even" project! I wish I could have bought a few more, since I believe that the price I paid is a lot less than these will sell for later.
Doc,
Something I've been meaning to ask. that Cart you Had. Was that store bought? Those Big Wheels on that seemed to go over the sand pretty good.
Daron, You were a huge help, and you did way more than your part. Thank You!
I will say that I'm shocked that it took so long for these to sell. I guess I just thought they would fly so didn't really plan on a 6 month venture. I'm definitely not a patient person, but I really thought these frames brought a lot to the table. They're the first of there kind, No more exist (as of today), They are instrumental when using ss gears, they keep your reel aligned, You can pick at a bird's nest much easier, one piece reel foot, when maintaining there's only one post (spinning) when removing or installing screws, the hook keeper reel clamp, and if I do say so myself, they are absolutely beautiful and extremely functional. Let me know if I missed something. Tom is the guy to thank for this coming to life, and I think he did an excellent job. As a testament to Tom's craftsmanship there hasn't been one returned for any issues (not his fault for old Penn screw holes being displaced). Every one was perfect... Thank You Tom! Hope you guys and gals nail a monster, like Erik so you can really appreciate its beauty.
Thanks,
Dom

Plug and play.... nailed it!
I personally can't believe how long those frames lasted... in theory they should have flown off the shelves.. just look at Dom's specs!
If somebody feels they missed out, well... "You snooze, you lose"... there were only 40 of em.
Hopefully I can get my hands on 1 more black one.... muaahhhhh 8)
I punished a 40 lb wahoo with mine yesterday... the fish no match for 28lbs of drag...didn't even heat up the star, no need for gloves on that one. ;D ... it was over quickly... I just love the winch factor when you're in a hurry to re-deploy the spread.
BTW, I'd like another black one to balance out the silvers in the family ;D ;D

The older 115L reels don't all have the same screw alignment. :-\
I have to sell this reel, and buy another one.
I just checked myself to make sure it wasn't your frame and you are right, one of the screw hole on the older plate is 1/16" off. It would probably work if forced, but I'm not willing to strip that screw hole and I'm sure neither are you.
Here are a couple of shots of mine:

You learn something everyday.
Thanks for pointing this out to us.
You're welcome. I won't admit how long it took to figure it out. :-[
If anyone comes across a good deal on a ball bearing/Al spool 115L....
Even though I'm showing the right side plate, have you noticed? Same third screw from the clamp bolt.
So many years and we're still unveiling secrets ;D.
Since you only need 1/16". What if you enlarged the side plate and ring hole just a smidge?
Yes you could buddy, and it would do just fine afterward. I also rather drill the plate holes a little more instead of forcing the screw. Two holes tuned up, one on each side is all that it needs.
Keep in mind, that frame would do just fine without that screw, it is a much stronger reel now.
I know its not the proper way Doc, but since you want to use a bushing reel. That's the way I would go.
Just use a Dremel and elongate that hole a little in the sideplate. No one will ever know. ;)
I thought about drilling the side plate; I'm too much of a perfectionist, especially for something like this. I only paid $20 for this reel, and I hope to recoup some of the cost of another reel by selling this one.
I thought you would say that. :D
20 Bucks! :o I'll give you $40 and do the mod myself. ;)
Well Guys I put the frame to work on a nice 6 foot Bull shark last night at Chicken Bone Beach. It performed flawlessly. I will have a full reort and pics posted soon.
Can't wait to see them Chris!
