Title: Chris's 12/0
Post by: Shark Hunter on December 15, 2015, 06:05:27 AM
I received a reel today from Chris. He is known as Lowprofile around here.
He is the young Marine stationed in Korea that caught that big swordfish on his 12/0.
He said he had problems with the star backing off during the fight.
I'm going to take care of that, and am honored to work on his reel for him.
It arrived in a Pelican case. Now that is Class. I transport my own backups in this same manner.
An insert will be in order here.

Thanks Daron!

I just don't trust the postal service. I've had too many packages arrive beat up and damaged to risk something with so much sentimental value. You should try flying with a pelican case full of reels and hooks.. Mine got opened at three airports and of course they un packed it and tried to re pack it... Not a fan of TSA and they apparently aren't fans of Pelicans lol.

Anyways, I can't wait to get this reel back! The insert and DD I'm sure will just put it over the top!

Very cool, my wife is over seas for another couple of months but she has had some yarn and accessories mailed to her from a few people on a crochet site, enough to spread through the base and I can tell you it means the world to her to know that people appreciate her sacrifice of being away from everything dear to her for the greater good. So I salute you Daron for the kind gesture and also Chris, thanks for your service and stay safe.

Just paying it forward John.
When I first came here. Sal took me under his wing. It took me a little while to catch on.
Out of the blue, He gave me a handle that I couldn't find. It wasn't a cheap handle either.
It finally sunk in.
There is a lot of people that come and go never to be seen again.
I'm just doing what makes this site so Great.
I had a little help with this one, the outpouring was incredible.
Chris will be a Happy Camper and so will we. ;)

I really wanted to get into this reel to see why Chris's drag was backing off. I didn't find anything out of the ordinary, Other than he had a spacer on top of the Belleville. I either do one or the other.
He won't have to worry about that anymore with the insert.
I understand now your concern with the dog engagement.
I left your original the same length and notched it to the sleeve, put it on the bottom and cut the top to fit.
In the garage, I was ready to wrap it up.
My neighbor came over with the sailor jerry.
I'll finish it up soon. Happy with the progress. ;)

I think it is a Jeweler's hammer. Like the one in Shawshank Redemption referred to as a Rock Hammer.
Miniature and perfect for driving sleeve pins.
I got in the garage again this afternoon to try and sand down some windshield wiper inserts for dog springs.
Very tedious work. I need a belt sander and I will have one in the next few days after trying to sand this down with hand tools. I got a small piece down enough to make it work.
I probably spent two hours making those two little stainless springs.
Your reel is ready Chris. You sent it to me with no rod clamp, brace, star or handle.
It will come back to you as you see it. Star and stainless handle with all the upgrades that I know of.
SS posts, dogs, sleeve, Insert, Handle and 5/0 grip.
The drag is different than a regular Senator. Probably 10 lbs fully backed off, to full drag in one turn of the star. More than you can hold on to. ;)
It will be smooth, just with small increments. It is the most modern upgrade to the 12/0 to date.

:D You are funny man Dominick. No, the hammer is not for sale.
It was given to me by my boss and I plan on keeping it.
Sure, it might be just a tack hammer, but it is antique and pretty rare.
It is a 195W Marion Magnetic.

Thank you and to everyone who helped out with this! I will be sure to fish it hard and report back how the super senator handles! She's got plenty of Mojo and I hope some of it rubbed off on you. If history tells us anything, she'll be the busiest reel in the line up.

Got it yesterday. Looks great and I'm super excited to fish it! I just need to finish the rod I started building for it. I can't thank you guys enough, far more than I could ask for and anyone could expect!

That LP 18/0 is different from the LP 18/0's I fished from 2012-2014. I wonder when and why they changed. I'll give that rig a try this weekend.

That 18/0 might be "catch all tackle" brand. I know I have some with reverse offset.
I think these were made by LP for them. Just a Guess.

Glad you are Ok with the share Chris.
I have some washers in my possession that can put out a lot more power.
If you want them., just say the word.
Problem is they are all on. Not a lot of slip when pressure is applied.
I'm just glad the reel that went through my hands to yours has performed as expected.
You definitely have your priority's straight.

Nice job on the beach landing  and glad they swam away. We need all we can get to thin the herd of fur bags here. In a few years those smaller ones will change their diet to mammals. Been seeing more and more of them around here, a good sign, hope it continues.
