i don't know about you guys, but i thought this photo was particularly impressive. nuvole, thank you very much! alan
It caught my eye too, great pic.
Surprisingly...it is a photo I've taken in a rush to seek help when I found that the four washer is not in the schematics.
Well, it all started with my usual old bad practice to strip any reels into the very minimum parts, soak them into kerosene, dry them up with rag, then air them for a couple of hours on paper napkin, while going to the challenging part looking for schematics to put them back in a piece.
This photo have no whatever copyright issue, and I'll be glad if anyone would make good use of it.
Cheers,
Arthur
you know, for many guys, this would be their worst nightmare! ;D
Thus my "Oh Uh" comment.

here's the september winner!
and a runner up! note the photo on the laptop computer!
I think if the September picture was reversed (fish in mouth and banana in hand) that it would be a real awesome picture.
That would be funny ;D.

OK Dom, let's see your collection!
only 2 eggbeaters!looks like a 850 penn and 1 other.man after my own heart ::)
Hey Rob and Crew,
Come Thanksgiving week I'm gonna get mom to post the "collection". She can rock a computer, and I'll have plenty of time cause I have to be a good boy while mom visits... hope I can do without for 5 days ;) I'm still hoping to find the vintage 3/0 and the 113hl I've been looking for to complete it. I'm sure plenty of you guys have a more extensive collection, but I've only done this since May...with all you guys to thank for it. I was on a reel collectors site the other day, and saw 2 complete sets of black sideplated senators from 1/0 to 16/0 (ALL pre-1948) and for good measure he had the entire ocean city collection 1/0-16/0 (the ones that look just like the senators)...now that was impressive! Mine ain't there yet, but I can't wait to share my hard work and show you guys what a monster you created. Thanks

thanks to bearsharker for posting these photos! http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=1317.0
I had to move this reel while I waited for parts. After I loaded it on the tray, I thought of the picture of the month, so I thought I'd get it uploaded before Broadway Dom shows his Senator collection. It's a Penn International 50vsw. I titled the picture "Waiting for Parts from Scott's." If you have a NY accent, it rhymes. Dominick
Looks like surgery time! I just got some of those dental picks from my dentist... can't wait to try them out. Nice photo of your set up!
Dom
dominick, you're way too neat!
Nice tray. My wife would kill me if I used a tray like that to hold my reel parts. She would probably send me to McDs to cockroach (permanently borrow) a tray or two for my reel work.
bryan, english! speak english not pidgeon. i can't follow you when you do that. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

hey, dominick! so what parts are you waiting for? (um, did i totally miss the point?) ;D
Alan: You did not miss anything. I screwed up in dismantling the drag cover. I removed the e-clip and permanently locked the cover. I thought I would have to break the cover or the pin to remove it. So before I tried to remove it with the locking pin in place I ordered a new cover and I lost the small e-clip so I ordered that also. After the parts came, I was able to pry the locking pin up and grip it to unscrew the drag cover. So I don't need the drag cover anymore. If you need one I have it. I'll send it gratis to you or any of the registered Alani Tani guys and gals. Alan, Im also I'm working on getting you one of those dental tools. Everytime I hear that you use a fish hook to remove a seal I think I'd better get you a real tool. I'm working on it. Dominick
i shouldn't post after the second scotch (or was that the second double). i've got pack of 20 dental tools send up from a member in los angeles. swing by the house some time for a glass of wine. i'm fresh out of french bordeaux's but i've got a couple of decent cabs.
Alan: If you keep inviting people over for glasses of wine (Einstein) when are you going to have time reel time? When things warm up in the spring, I'll bring over some great Zin. Dominick

On a side note... all these pic are making me want more room for my fishing hobbies. I need a bigger bathroom.
Maybe we need to rethink your man cave (Garage). The only thing is that when we are over and need parts, it's easy for you to just pass us a box of parts. This set-up, we will need to reach over you and search. But can you imagine getting all of those bins (crates) filled with parts off the floor?

No Dom he's better looking....but I have more hair ;)
From the looks of that handle sitting next to that 16/0, I'm going to guess that he was working on that reel around the mid fifties, I'm sure that he is longer with us, if he is I would love to talk with him. There is a good chance that you might have that same reel in your collection ;D, you never know ;).
I like the picture for its story of old-world craftsmanship.
It shows the Dominick-sized hammer close by him and the Dom-sized hammer in the foreground. ;D ;D And he's even got more hair than I do! :D
i know they had air tools back then and i can see air lines behind him. i'm just surprised that he is using a hand screwdriver. just think of how many reels would have survived if they would have used 308 or 316 stainless steel instead of chromed brass.

Alan, did you see the red fiber washer under the main gear? Maybe Sal should be flogged for not having a C-F washer there. ;D ;) ;D
i thought it was actually quite clever. the work was clean and precise. it showed an excellent understanding of the problems faced by some of these older reels, and the man came up with a solution! "better to light a candle than to curse the darkness."

Great tutorial SD the cardiff is really underated add ceramic bearings and carbontex and you have a damn good reel, here's another tip, to add a bearing to the drive shaft instead of the plastic bushing you need a 5x8x2.5 flanged bearing carefully grind down the edge, then you will need to hone out the bearing well using a fine stone on a rotary tool be carefull you only need to remove the powdercoat, this improves the smoothness of the reel considerably.if any one would like a bearing pm me with your address i have a few spare ones and will mail one to you free.
you know, it's nice to see a young man on the right track!

My hometown is under 3' of snow. The house that I grew up in is attached to rear of the bell tower.
Sal: You grew up in a church? Did you ever meet Quasimoto? Did the bells bother you? ::) Dominick
Dominick, I used to ring those bells as a kid. Would you believe that some of my friends used to hold on to the bell and swing out of that tower? I was never that crazy. About the noise, we're not talking framed 2x4's here, that wall had to be 3' wide. The tower, the palace and my house still look the same as the day I lef, about 40 years ago. Even though it's still our house, we are not allowed to touch anything on the exterior, if we want to paint the front door, the mayer decides on what color and we only have three choices.

Great pic and history Sal - thanks for sharing.
I used to love driving around the Irish countryside, finding castles/ruins and climbing them.
Many had finely crafted spiral staircases etc still intact.
Some castles even had miniature staircases, doors and passages etc through which the children could escape during sieges.
Just don't get stonework like that in NZ.

This is what my bench really looks like some of the time. Actually I'm just showing off some of the reels I own. When I get rid of the winter junk I have piled on the bench, I'll post some pictures of what it looks like when I neaten it up.

I picked up a rough and very loose Silver Beach 99 and decided it was time I had an Albacore Special.
I had a Jigmaster 500 RH Side Plate assembly with dual alternating dogs and a Penn 24-56 power handle so all I needed was a solid frame and that would be it.
Decided to stiffen the frame using two "Solid" Bars in place of the original Posts.
Deep drilled and tapped the (5-40UNC) crew holes to suit the shorter bars.
Cut the bars to length and made up four crescent shaped attachment plates from 2mm s/steel to locate the original Post holes in the frame.
Showing attachment plates secured in place prior to fitting RH Ring.
Assembled reel showing location of "Solid" Bars and the attachment plates which are the same thickness as the Stand.
Now to find some Irish Albacore. ;D ;D
Thank's Alan,I'm honoured.
Jigger,

Quote from: VW on June 25, 2013, 05:39:17 PM
I think I have found a way to overcome the objection many have expressed to using the flathead screws I use and have recommended. And it is easy to do.
The problem is the head OD is larger then the Penn oval head screws. This leaves the rim of the head overhanging the countersink in the trim ring. I decided to try to reduce the OD by creating a bevel.
I used an old Penn frame post to hold the screw and chucked that in a drill press. If the screw had a lot of wobble/runout, was usually able to get it running true enough by loosening and tightening the screw a few times. Then held a file at 45 degree angle against the rim while turning the post/screw at a fairly slow speed. Started with a coarse file, then switched to a finer one to remove the burr at the new rim and lightly touch the bevel a couple of times. You need to move/stroke the file when cutting, otherwise the couple of teeth actually touching and cutting will clog up with chips and stop cutting. The technique does not require much pressure, just light contact and keep the file moving.
I purposefully made a smaller bevel on the middle screw. One could probably make a more rounded profile, more like an oval head. I think it would be more difficult to make them all about the same. I like the appearance of the bevel and will continue to use it.
Alto Mare has a pic somewhere on the forum showing these screws on a reel with Accurate sideplates. The screws do stick out a lot and I understand why one would find it unacceptable. I cannot say this method would solve that problem, but it might.

The drag washers are carbon fiber laminated with a high temp epoxy that's stable to 330 degrees. Thickness is the same as the original metal washers at 0.030".
I have similar washers in my okuma spinning reels, and the drag is certainly capable of exceeding the structural limits of those reels, but when fished at normal drag levels, the drag is very smooth and progressive.
A set of 5 carbon washers will be $10 shipped in the US. If you are unsatisfied for any reason, just return them for a full refund, including original shipping charges. Pm me to order.
Alan,

When is that custom cabinet of yours getting done? how long do you want to keep us in suspense? :-\
Sal,
Can't believe you remembered that. That cabinet you speak of is still being made and was promised to be in my house by Christmas. It's been almost 2 years in the making. My friend/art teacher who is Arizona iced teas resident artist has been working on it between projects for them. Dying to see it and have been patient, but my girl is complaining about no space in the kitchen because I have my reels in the cabinets (safest place I could find;)
All I was told was its made out of walnut that's over 1 1/2" thick and has led lights built in. I have no idea what he's got going on with it other than that.
As soon as it comes I will post photos for sure.
Now all I need is more reels to fill it up ;)
Thanks
Dom
Dom
Your friend didn't say what year the Cabinet would be finished. Did he give you a time limit between 2 - 6 yrs?
Mike
Mike,
That's what my girl says, but I understand why. Have you ever had a can of Arizona joe DiMaggio espresso or the jack Nicklaus Arizona drink? He drew them amongst doing many other jobs for the owners personal homes, distribution centers, headquarters, etc.
here is the link to his website(not updated in years). He's been an artist, teacher, sculptor, etc. until within the past three years started with Arizona and opened his own art school. He's my best friend and busiest man I know (like sal)

Ps- I am dying to get this thing, but good comes to those who wait.

In the previous post I cautioned against trying the heavy test with a 4.6 or 5.5 spool since the spindle is thinner than a 3.2 but I wanted to know SO I tested it.
Reel: Newell S533 5.5 with Tiburon NK kit and Bryan's 5+1 stack drags, 40 lb momoi diamond with San Diego Jam knot with 3 wraps.
Rod: Custom Stroker by Witch Doctor Tackle
The dumbbell was turned correctly so you can see I had a full 40 lb drag test with no slippage. I backed off the drag and pulled across the yard with rod horizontal at 30 lb of drag and it was smooth.
I disassembled the reel after the test and found everything normal. I taped the mono down and spun the spool and it ran for 45 seconds so no damage to the spindle.
Newells can be tanks too. The NK will hold 270 yds of 40 lb mono.
Bryan, I used your thin washer on top instead of the recommended stock washer just to make sure I cleared the side plate on assembly. Worked great.
Don't try this at home. It is already done for you so load and fish.
Dwight
:P
Good Job Dwight! ;D
Now you just need to replace that dumbbell with a 40 lb Fish! ;)
That rod's folded . . .

Yes it is. I just noticed that the frame is missing from the picture.
thought Id recognize the handle and lever & drive gear of that beauty of work horse . wish they had made a lefty version of that reel
He even swapped out the Bridge screws! I say this is well earned! ;D

Thanks guys. This is a beast of a reel. Hope to try those BP gears and hex drags out this season!

These aren't really photos of the month – but wasn't sure where to place them.
The moderators can move them to a better spot if necessary.
A couple of days ago, I disassembled, cleaned, and restored 7 old reels for clients -- (3) Penn 500s, (1) Penn Mag 10 LW, (1) Penn Peerless #9 LW, (1) old Penn 80, and a Garcia-Mitchell 624.
Thanks to Alan and the guys on this site -- this was the first time in 30 years I have greased the drags. I used HT-100s with Shimano drag grease, shorter spacing sleeves for more drag adjustment -- and they operate better than the ones brand new out of the box! No stutter on start-up, full range of smooth drag control with no jerkiness, adjusted at 10% below top drag limitations.
These were old salt encrusted reels with bakelite spools on the jigmasters, bent handles, drag stacks that needed a knife to separate, two would barely turn, and all made weird noises.
The only other upgrades besides the drags were some handles, 3 new metal spools, 2 new level-wind guides, new under gear washers, couple of new pawls, a couple of nylon idler gears for the level-winds, new dog springs -- and that's it! On the old Penn 80, I just cleaned, polished and restored as original since it is for a shelf -- not intended for use -- and the client wanted it original. So I used the old style drags along with a fiber under gear washer.
They turned out well -- and I appreciate the advice on the greased HT-100s.
Goes to show -- Never too late to learn something -- hopefully every day.
Best,
Fred

Now I know why your bench is spotless Domenico. ;)
I see you mentioned HT-100's greased with Shimano drag grease.
Beware that after a real hard run on your drags, the washers will glaze to a shiny solid disc.
It happened to me and I found out later that it happened to a few other fishermen too.
I swapped out all my 113H drag washers to Carbontex's after that.
I am not sure if this subject was mentioned here in the forums before.
Sorry for getting of topic.
This is news to me. They are both made of carbon Fiber, Whats the difference? I have HT-100's in most of my reels, and haven't had a problem. All CF drags will glaze over eventually. I now custom cut mine from laminated sheet. Mostly .120.
Haven't noticed on my reels :-\.
Beautiful dream shop! I too noticed glazing, especially on under gear ht-100's like the four stack Newell's. changing those out all the time!
This is just my opinion, but there is a major difference between greasing the drags and not. The reels that I maintain for a charter captain/friend of mine without grease glaze over much faster than with grease. I'm not speaking about Shimano grease as I've never used it on drags before, but this is the case with Cal's for sure. If you have a bunch of big runs and a lot of heat build up they glaze much quicker.
Again, not a fact, just my opinion and experience.
Thanks
Dom
I haven't taken a real hot run on the carbontex drags since then. Nothing like how my HT's went through. But I did hear that the HT's and the carbontex are not exactly the same in composition.
This info about the glazing came from a legitamate tackle shop owner when I mentioned it to him.
I don't know how similar Shimano and Cal's are either..
nice shop! for drag washers, i'm happy with anything made of carbon fiber. for drag grease, shimano or cal's is fine. inox makes something too, but i'm not as familiar with it. any combination of any carbon fiber drag washer with any pure teflon grease is going to work better than anything stock in these older reels.
i have a few of these buried somewhere. nice reels, great effort! well done, sir!

I took used drag washers from the Penn 113 4/0.
I made bigger holes in them so the washers could be easily placed on the bridge.
The reel is fully operational.

First of all I would like to thank Bryan Young for the awesome 500 series 5+1 drag kit. It made a huge difference compared to the stock drag washers. We are a group out of South Texas and are big fans of the Newells just like most of you. As of right now, I believe we are one of a handful of fisherman down here that still use these Newells for surf fishing aside from the Penn Senators. I uploaded a picture of a Bull Shark we caught last year on a Newell S550 4.6. Check us out on www.facebook.com/bocachicabeachlegends . We hope to learn more from all you guys since we also heavily rely on our gear every time we are out on the water.

Will polish the rings to high shine at a later stage.
So far have put about 30 odd hours into making these rings. Probably an hour or two more to polish to a high gloss.
Another note, I had to wear leather gloves while handling parts and the lathe. There are a lot of fine needle like shavings that are created making these, was picking splinters out of my hands constantly, even with gloves on.
Hoping to get a T60NK kit for this reel. I have already got the stainless sleeve, will possibly go the BP Gears down the track. Will be making some more stainless parts, the old ratchet system will be remade, and the spacer under the star are the next on the list. I intend to not bother with the harness lugs, but will make some filler pieces to take up the space under the rings. Will also take to the side plate for the extra dog(s). Have already made those.
Will post again when I have made some more progress.
To "Shear Volume", if you were to spool all of them with 50lb JB Spectra.....how many light years from the earth would that reach????

Moved here last year from Florida and absolutely love the fishing here. Pohnpei is the largest island in the Micronesia chain and is surrounded by a ring reef. Just outside the reef is the deep blue Pacific and pelagics like to roam close by so there are no long runs required. Most of my fishing is done from a few hundred yards to 6-8 miles offshore. Yellowfin tuna are here year round but in greater numbers in the summer. Here's a 53lber I caught last month.
Great fishing here, anyone wants to make the trek here I can arrange a charter and also tons of great hiking, diving and snorkeling as well. I work for a guy who is opening a new hotel in June so I can help with a place to stay as well.

That deckhand lives here. His name is Mick, and I have an autographed pic of that up on the wall of my shop. He survived it,and the guy that took the pic was the one that pulled him back into the boat. Some deckhands that this has happened to,are never seen again. It happened in usa yrs ago and the same thing happened again, about 2 yrs later, a few mile from that same spot. But this time they found a deck shoe, but sadly that was all. Wiring a grander or any good sized billfish is dangerous work!!
We were taught at an early age how to leader fish, but when the excitement sets in, you often forget and these things happen all the time. People need to practice, practice, practice to be safe.

A family connection,Major William Smyth owned the Dauntless Shipyard Inc for many years in Mystic Seaport. Designed and built some beautiful boats there.
I believe Scott's Bait and Tackle are in that area too.
Scott's & Mystic are between 150 & 200 Mi. apart
I believe he is confusing Mystic, CT with Mystic Island, NJ which is right next door to Little Egg Harbor where Scott's B&T is.

My dad used to have a mid 70s Mako walk around when I lived in Bermuda. Great little offshore boat, though as I recall the deep V was great for head on seas, but made here a little squirrelly in big following seas, a quick snap when drifting the trough, and no built in floatation or self bailing cockpit always made me a bit nervous when backing down hard in big seas. Good solid boat though.

Hi guys - I've been wanting to go out and put the triple dogged bridge to the test to see how it will hold up ie stainless dogs on the brass teeth on the main shaft - but due to health and weather I haven't been able to get out . I had a brainstorm the other day and decided to simulate fishing my reel via my drill press for an hour or more and strip and check for wear .Before i assembled everything I jewelled the bridge and gave the dogs a final polish-measured the teeth opposing each other on the main shaft and inked the tops of the teeth with vivid black marker.

Hello all, finished one of the side plates on the Long Beach 60 I picked up for my daughter. I bought my wife a Cameo printer/cutter for her birthday and used it to cut out this vinyl design. Should last about a year and then we move on to the next none specific character my daughter is in love with at that time, and when she is older it should all peel off without any damage to the reel. Now to find a decent rod that a child can handle easily.
Thanks, very cool for this to make photo of the month. My daughter hasn't stopped playing with the reel since she got it. She is most definitely daddy's girl! :)

it's very subjective on my part. something unique, unusual, special. it would be a small first time accomplishment from a novice before it would be a monumental achievement from a seasoned pro. or it could be anything related to mickey mouse!!!! ;D

My son caught his first fish today! And then he caught three more for good measure. All four were panfish.
Used a Zebco 202 rod/reel combo, red worms on Aberdeen hook and an unknown brand bobber...brings back memories.

Built this reel for my Dad for Christmas. I think he's gonna love it due to it being one of my grandfathers oldies. I do have a question though, after adding the HT-100 drag kit and a new bellville washer there isn't a lot of travel for the star between the handle and the spacer...due to the thicker drag kit should I just remove the bellville washer? Quick progressive shots...

Well, I made it back in one piece! :D A little the worse for wear, though... Sunday started out okay, with a great yellowtail bite, but then gradually turned downright brutal, with high squirrely seas and 25-knot winds making the fishing pretty energy-draining, at least for an older gal like me. At one point I was on the starboard rail when we took a steep roll and I found myself in green water up to my thighs... yuck! As if that wasn't enough, I hooked my biggest yellowtail of the trip and a sea dog swam up and stole it... Son of a b**ch!! >:(
Fortunately the ocean settled down overnight and by Monday we had a large swell but no whitecaps and little wind. We spent the morning looking for kelps with no luck, then another boat called us in to a school of mahi-mahi and we got into a full-on dodo frenzy... epic! I limited out quickly, as did everyone else, and so the trip concluded on the highest possible note. Here's one of my fish:
any fisherperson would be proud of that
goodonyah Aiala,
we need more like you ;)
~A~
You are dressed just right to go Clubbing when you get home. That's a nice size as you call them DODO.
Mike
Well deserve photo of the month... Aiala!
...did something chomp that Mahi's tail?
Keep 'em coming,
Dom
Dom,
My guess is it was a troll caught fish. Sportboats here cut a fin off on the tail on troll fish when the boats have jackpots. Troll fish don't count in the jackpots, either do sharks or billfish.
Thanks for the explanation SoCal... now it makes sense why it was such a straight cut.
Dom
SoCal is correct, troll fish have their tails clipped to eliminate them from jackpot contention. On
ROYAL STAR, though, tails are also clipped on line-caught (tagged) fish to designate passengers (like me) who want their catch processed by Fisherman's Processing. Any fish that feels heavy enough to be a jackpot contender is weighed on the spot and recorded before going into the RSW tank.
Now I'm going to sleep for eighteen hours or so... I am one wiped-out (but content) old lady.
À demain, mes amis. ~A~
Nice fish!

The keys bridges for fishing is a special place to me. Something about being out there for 2/3days sleeping on the bridge and fishing with your buds that puts me at easy from the everyday task. What can be caught out there on these bridge are, muttons, cero macks, macks, cobia, grey snapper, jacks, permit, grouper, sharks, etc. On this short day we where targeting permit. The way the permit hitting and fighting, the bud called it the runaway train. Ive never had a permit pull that much, that hard & did everything it could to break me off. I had to chase the fish maybe 2/3 city blocks to fight him hard. Even then he wasnt giving up. This 29lb Permit gave me a run & a memory for life. I almost lost the fish too, with the amount of pressure i was putting on the permit, i snapped the gamakatsu hooks, Luck for me he was on the bridge net already- here on out it's 2x to 4x hooks for these guys.

He was an amazing man who was a machinist, carpenter and electrician. In his free time he fished a lot back in the 60's, 70's and 80's on his Cuddy Cabin (picture below). We miss him dearly, but constantly find happiness in his legacy of family...ok done with the memoir onto the fun pics! ;D

yup, that an a dollar and you can ride the bus! ;D
you know, i don't think i've ever discussed the criteria. it's all very subjective, but the main thing i look for is the degree of difficulty. for most of us, bench top full of parts spread all out is no problem, but for the first timer it can be a near religious experience. some catches represent personal best that have been pursued for years. others represent a lifetime of accomplishment - a grandfather and an old boat, a 5 year old with his first catch, or the spouse or significant other that finally went fishing with you and actually had a great time. the most terrifying ski slope could be 80 degrees for an expert or 10 degrees for the novice. either way, it's just a small way of recognizing the amount work that went into posting these great photos. thanks to all! alan
Thanks Alan!

nice photos. they're fine here!!!!
This is certainly not the biggest fish I ever caught, but it is the biggest fish I ever caught in 300 feet of water, using 30# spiderwire on a Mitchell Spidercast SC3000 reel, and medium action 6 1/2 foot Spidercast rod. Took forever to get it off the bottom. The rod butt and tip were within an inch or two of each other most of the time. The captain of the boat was a little miffed at me for taking too long to reel it in. He got over it when he saw the fish. 64 hour trip, September, 2001.
If the fish doesn't look that big, imagine that I am 6'4" 230lbs.
Nice fish! ;)
i think my contribution is in here somewhere!

Got this cod amongst others today. This one was 35lb before gutting.
A Penn Senator 113HLW with custom crank made it easy to haul in. A walk in the park.
I also got two 20lb cods and one 15lb cod at the same time. That's 55lb of cod on the line. Again, no problem.
Well built reels makes codfishing easy. Well, I do have a nice rod and harness so that I don't have to use all my strength to just hold the rod. :-)

This photo reminds me of fishing tuna around the gulf rigs. The rig hands were always quick to point out visable targets in the water below. Sounds like that job has some excellent 'fringe benefits'.
Whenever a boat comes around, im sure to point them in the right direction. No need to keep secrets.

Alan, I am truly honored that you would put this picture here. I know that my father would be so proud of it. I am sure he would be, like me, very inspired by the character and sincerity of everyone that is associated with this site. I am truly humbled by the outpouring of help, support and giving that comes from the people that you put together on this site. Now I must go wipe a tear off and go to happy hour for a beer( or 2,3,4) and celebrate my Dad and the great people here. Thank you Richy

Perfect picture and perfect saying Alan. One old fisherman departs and a new one steps in to take his place.
Alan kind of hit the nail on the head when he said "Circle of Life".
Reminded me of this old picture in the hallway just before walking into my upstairs reel shop.
I think it might be one of those old black and white photos that have been colorized likely in the 40s or 50s.
On first glance, it depicts an older gentleman fly fishing probably in the Rockies -- with a young kid sitting on a log -- also with fly gear.
What do you all think?Does this show a father and son?
Or does this show a kid learning to fly fish -- then the same kid 70 years later, fishing the same water?
Or, am I overthinking things?
Picked it up years ago at a yard sale for $1.00.
Someone put a little thought and work into this.
Best,
Fred

Here's my Shimano Bantam Tournament 1000.
Not what I would call 'a absolute' collectors piece due to some flaws like cracks in the side plates (screw sides) in it... However internally it came quiet dirty but pretty good shape after 30 years, and after a fair bit of work like super-tuning of all parts and then application of proper oils and greases.
Beautiful reel to look at - happy that I actually have one "finally"...
Pretty cool shot. Early morning muskie fishing. I think this was taken in the Kawartha Lakes region of Ontario, Canada but not sure. Too many fishing trips and never write anything down.

Just bought this nice old boat for my fishing trips.
Built in 1965 by a boutbuilder close by. Many of these was built from about 1910 and up to about 1980.
It's quite small at 19.5 ft, but it can take more wind and waves than any modern plastic boat at similar size.
It's well mantained and has no rot anywhere. No leaks either. The forward cabin is dry and has enough place for to bunks.
The motor is a single cylinder sabb 10hk diesel with adjustable propeller.
If I hoist the read sail (Mesan sail) I can adjust the propeller and rudder from stearing position or from the deck so the boat stays at the same place regardless of wind and current. Nice for my kind of fishing.
I won't get to the fishing spots in a hurry, but I can just start 30 minutes earlyer aand have a nice cup of coffe on the way out.:-)

I just love the boat. Very nice handling in choppy water. After the trip yesterday evening, I checked the diesel tank. I think it doesn't use diesel, but produces it. :)

Not so much as 10 meters of tide, but at full moon we have a bit more than 3 meters tide.
Not baltic either. Vega in northen Norway. Just a few miles south of the polar circle. That translates to no midnight sun, but we are close. Long nights and short days during wintertime, but we still get some sunlight at midwinter. Since the gulf stream passes by here, the winters are mild with very little snow. Perfect location for me. :)

The photo was taken at Liberty State Park directly on the Hudson across from Downtown Manhattan. Thanks for the love, guys! I've forwarded a screenshot of the page (and link) to Sam's father and grandparents. Sam's been fishing for 1/3 of his 6-year old life (the last third ;D). They go to the Outer Banks every summer and surf fish for sharks. He's got more experience with a rod and reel than most any 6-yr old you can find. And he's fishing-crazed, like his grandfather.
would have been funny to get a picture of him hanging by the belt loops on that scale! ;D
Sam's the Man.....way to go!!!

On the water at 4 am yesterday. Man the heavy cloud cover made it pitch black. Once I got my night vision and got acclimated I was able to zip to the reef. Tach said 4 grand and water temp was 73.5.
Usually if I start off in the dark, I'll go to the big (15") homemade green plug. Several passes with fish showing on the FF produced nothing. Not too much weed and 1 1/2 hrs into the outgoing and all should be perfect, right ????
Switched to the ole reliable killer, the red/white slope head swimmer. Got whacked on the first pass and it was chaos until I rapped it up at 7:58 on the cell.
Of course there were lots of blues mixed in with the bass, but the fact they were chewing together made it all OK! 6 bass and some amount of blues I didn't even bother to count.
The bass were in the 25/35 lb class and most of them were tanks. Short and fat. The one fish I kept had to have surgery performed as this fish really wanted to eat this plug.
I know some of the members here purchased these plugs and if your not using them, your really missing the boat. This plug catches. I watched several other boats dragging frames, and they were catching schoolies and bluefish.
I'm always amazed how this plug can really root out the bigger fish. Back at the dock early, cleaned fish and the boat and even had time to pull all the spark plugs and re- gap them. The Ficht motors are great engines but they do run hot on the troll. The computer does this automatically to keep the plugs from fouling at prolonged low speed periods.
From the heat the plug gap will widen and when that happens you'll get and occasional sputter. A quick re-gap to .028 solves the problem.
I'm seeing a substantial amount of peanut bunker in the area and if it stays like this it may turn out to be an amazing fall. Fingers crossed.
All have a great day, regards, .. Lou

Thanks all!
My Dad was my mentor and inspiration and I owe it all to him. He had a passion for hunting and fishing that really rubbed off on my brother and I. Many a days when I'm fishing and catching I still think .......... wish you were here Pop to enjoy this!
Once he knew you were serious about doing something he was only too happy to explain in detail. The patience of a saint. He was the best and fished with me until his early 80's when he passed.
Once in a while he would ask if I'd think about calling in sick to work and head out fishing. It was a no brainer!
One spring day when I had my Seacraft, I skipped work and we headed south of Block to codfish. We caught so many fish diamond jigging that day we were literally standing in them. He talked about it forever. Nothing but good times and good memories!!!!
Thanks again and all have a great evening, .. Lou
You don't realize how lucky you are Lou.
I lost my Dad when he was only 62. Just likes Fred's Brother. They were the same age. A month away from his 63rd Birthday.
The Diabetes took my Father.
I have seen it time and time again. The things they know they are not supposed to have is a driving force for them to have them in excess.
I miss him every day, but I live on as he lives with me every step I take. ;)
Well Said Mr. D.

They are unpredictable. I have seen them beat the heck out of you and then just a mind fight until the gaf hits and then roll off of it and then it gets scary that you may lose it. The AJs fight a lot harder pound for pound. And when you hook a 30 lb red snapper on the bottom it feels like a whale for a couple minutes.

Well done Randy!!!!!!

Thanks Greg. It was on the kite rig, which consisted of a very heavy 7' Calstar rail rod (I don't know the blank number), an Accurate ATD80 full of 200 lb. braid, a "double trouble" leader with two live caballitos hanging on 8/0 Trokar circle hooks. It's not a very fair fight on that gear, but at my age, I need all of the help that I can get.

Thanks for posting the photo Alan. See my reply to Gregg's post above for the gear list. I was using my Alutecnos belt while the fish was out away from the boat. I love it because it has a gimbal socket (see photo) so the gimbal never accidentally slips off of the bar, which sometimes happens with the Smitty and Braid belts. As soon as the fish was under the boat, I just put the butt under my arm, got down on one knee, and let the rail do the work.

Thanks Tom, Warren, Jeff and Wallace.
Decker, ez2cdave is right, it's a yellowfin tuna. It was second in the pool at 214 lbs. The pool was won by a 254 lb. fish.
The next group on the boat also experienced tough fishing, but they did catch a 308 lb. yellowfin and several others over 200 lbs.
If you want to load up your freezer and your neighbor's too, then you would probably be better off on a traditional long range trip, but if you don't have two weeks to spare and you want a good shot at your personal best yellowfin, I think that Puerto Vallarta is a great option, and if you have five days door to door, you can enjoy three full days and nights (the best bite is sometimes in the dark) of fishing.
The Red Rooster will probably not be making any more Puerto Vallarta trips until late 2017, but there are many other great options for multi-day trips. I have had great experiences on the Apollo and I know that Alan really enjoyed his trip with the Osuna brothers. I have heard good things about the Success. Do your research before deciding upon which boat would work best for you.
Randy

Let's see a pick of that reel hoisting him up in a harness... :) No offense, just think that reel could probably handle it. I spend much more time lifting kids than fish.
Jack, his mom, and dad are thrilled to see our lil' guy receive photo of the month, and like Dominick said even without a fish.
We're super proud and can't get enough of this special time. When he's running the boat, catching more fish than us, and telling me my knots are old fashion and extinct I'll have to look back and remember these unforgettable times, so I don't make him walk the plank. ;)
Jack's warmness and sweetness is evident in the photos but he's really something in person. I considered myself very lucky to have caught Kim, but I still don't know what I did to deserve such a fantastic family.
Alan, I didn't have a hard time finding ladies either, but as you know the key is finding the right one. That took me 35 years to realize. 8)

Those look like 2 different reels. I still in search of some sparkle dust (for rod building purpose) and small stars to finish the cosmetic of the rod and completely turn it into a girl magic wand
You might try Beverly's or Michael's for both of those, they are both crafting types of stores. Just mix the sparkles with clear coat.

I was born in Apalachicola in 1950. My Dad Ran a packing house, on the docks of the River. He used to take me to work
and he had one of the ladies who worked peeling shrimp or shucking oysters watch me while I would catch a bucket of pinfish.
The picture above was taken when we used to fish the ditches of Sumatra Road in Tates Hell a swamp outside east point. We caught bluegills, stumpknockers, and the pictured warmth perch, got to love that gear stick and string. Got my first spinning reel a luxor re-gifted from my father @ 10 and never stopped, collecting gear, or fishing.
Now I get more pleasure seeing kids catch there first or biggest fish while i just try and locate a bite for them.

When we finally saw color, we knew we had an ahi on but that kicked off a whole new wave of concern: would the hook hold this time, would something break, would we mess up in the endgame? Thankfully the hook did its job, the tackle held up, and we came through with a vintage A-game performance and got that ahi in the boat! Anyone nearby probably heard us yelling in celebration.
We shared all that fish with many family and friends and got lots of smiles and hugs in return. That's what it's all about! Tight lines to all, go catch a big one.

Two days ago, the guy that I use for my dumpsters had this reel on a broken rod in his truck.
I asked what was the deal with that reel, he said it was his 10 year old kid... a gift from his grandfather.
He mentioned the kid only used it once and it wouldn't go out of gear. He was trying to get it fixed.
I love fixing these reels that are handed down to grandkids, so I mentioned that I knew a little about these and that maybe I could
look at it.
Here is the reel:
As you can see, the pinion on the plastic spool was welded , I didn't even bother removing it.
I made it narrow and gave him a few goodies, he said he got a huge bird nest the first time he used it, so I gave him a few magnets :).
I also gave him a bigger handle, I had a piece of wood that was leftover and already rounded.
His grandfather is still around and I believe he has a little boat. Gives me a good feeling helping a kid making memories with his pop- pop.
I will hand deliver this one, I want to see his face :).
Best,
Sal
That wood hand is cool enough... Jeff
I have to agree... Sal, you're becoming one heck of a handle maker. That little wood stubby would've made Otto proud and a whole lotta fisherman more comfortable.

Both Tank and Rob were half sick and could barely fish, so I got left alone most of the trip filling coolers with fish, and had absolutely no time to turn on a camera. I though my arms were going to fall off! My LB 267 was a trooper...landed over two limits. Most of the film footage I got this trip was from our room balcony. 8)

My brother-in-law Jeff sent these pics from vacationing in Florida. Pretty sure they were at St. George Island.
The first little girl is his 3 year old granddaughter, Averie with her fish. I know very little about saltwater fish, anybody have a clue what species?
When were visiting in Georgia a couple weeks ago, I gave my brother-in-law this Offshore Angler 12' surf rod and a newly rebuilt D-A-M Quick 550N. His 7 year old granddaughter Sophia is posing by it, it'll be a few years before she's able to borrow it from Papaw.
Third pic is his daughter Kassidy with a catfish.
Fourth pic is Sophia with an unexpected guest. :o
Looks like they were having a great time !!
The one that Averie has looks like a squirrelfish to me. The coloration looks right, but I can't tell about the body shape. Squirrel fish have a long, round body and their gill plates have a flat, serrated (EXTREMELY sharp) edge on them. Excellent bait for grouper offshore and I'm told are fantastic eating if you get a bunch of them. Fun stuff!
Thanks for sharing!
Mike
That's a serious surf rod. French grunt, gafftopsail and loggerhead.

Recently, the Florida FWC increased the minimum size limit for Mutton Snapper from 16" to now 18". For boat fishermen, that's no big deal. For the land-based fisherman though, it has become nearly impossible to land a legal Mutton these days.
Since then, I've released dozens and dozens of shorties (some that would have been legal a couple of years ago) while pier fishing. Well, as it happens on my last two pier outings the seemingly impossible became possible! Got one keeper both times, the fish just squeaked in as legal and were both released into the frying pan. ;D
Here's the latest, a nice fat one.

This is a pic that Don Walton asked me to show. These guys got lucky and caught these two at 18kg and 20 kg.
I wish these dhu fish also lived on the east coast of Australia.
Don tells me they have very white flesh and are delicious.
cheers
Greg
Thanks for this Alan. Don will be delighted.
Don, that background reminds me of Quobba.
Greg
Good Greg, Quobba is only 600 mls further North, a lot of Quobba & further north, have red dirt, not all that far from the beach, you can generallly drive on the red dirt as close as 200 M from the beach up that way, then you have to let your tyers down to drive onto the white sand, we have let our tyers down as low as 4 PSI, then use low range second gear with the motor laboring so you dont spin you wheels & rip the teet of the tube.
Quobba, also have some cliffs, people do a lot of balloon fishing from. spanish mackeral up to 25Kg 55Lbs.
special thanks Alan, for taking an interest in this post, also if you look on google earth type in Carnavon, that is 600 mile North of Perth, after that keep going North, Quobba, Ningaloo reef the Exmouth, exmouth has a hugh big bay exmouth golf, but on the ocean side, the Continental shelf, is very close to shore, thats where most of the bill fish are caught. cheers Don.
Special thank you Alan for taking an interest, in this Picture of these two Western Australian Dhu fish, special thanks to Greg for posting them , cheers Don, stay safe, keep well.

I have some amazing memories of that place and I when I saw the pic of the dhu fish I had precicely the same reaction as
basto, but did not say it!
Here is a photo of Quabba that I took in 2011, some of my mates on a (dangerous) platform.
And a Queen fish that we tried very hard not to catch because of the height we fished from they all died and we did not have people to give them to and werent going to cook them.
Nice photo Cor, Queen fish not all that great to eat, Gee People have been washed of them hi cliffs on a calm day, let alone down were they were, great photo all the same, cheers Don.
Wow! What a fish...way to go Justin! 8)

Wow! What the heck ripped that tail off and how did they get the tail back?
Nice fish,
Dom
Yeah, I want to hear that story , too !!
he had an assist from a very large shark that bit the tail, but lee was literally able to yank the fish right out of the shark's mouth and jackpole it into the boat. it was amazing!!!!!! ;D
Holy moly.
That's a great pic, and story. Good work, Lee!
He jack poled it in?!!! Holy cannoli!
Lee, that's amazing... now I know why you look wore out.
Well done pal,
Dom
nah, that was an exaggeration! what happened was that the tuna was bit on the tail by the shark and lee was able to drag it to the boat, then the deckhands gaffed it. really nice fish!!!!! ;D
wow, great job Lee
that Shark just wanted to help Lee to blood the tune out for a better meat quality, that Tuna have Shark approval
Great work Lee!
I thought it was bad when I had to wrestle a Salmon away from a sea Lion.
Single pole bounce record. Nice work.
Brendan.

Returned yesterday from my ROYAL STAR 11-day Island Tackle trip. Great weather (lucky), good eats (standard), fantastic crew (as always). Fish-wise, I managed to score several bruiser Alijos YTs, a limit of small-but-numerous YFTs, assorted bottom-grabbers, and my real prize, this 71-lb beast I was lucky enough to troll up:

Of course, I can't wait to get back out there next year. For now, I wish the entire Ohana a very Happy (if unusual) Thanksgiving! :D
~A~
Yes we agree, great fish, nice smiles, cheers Don.

Don sent this photo and email message - I asked if I was able to post it, Don said, "Go right ahead!!!"
Thanks Alan, this fish did not have blue teeth, like that one about two months ago that we caught, this one`s teeth were all there sound long, made for crushing most shells & crustations, note the white chin, ball chin groper, or blue bone groper, they are a really good fish to eat, on a par with the Dhu fish coral trout, very slippery when they come out of the water, this one also had the molti colours in his eye, amazing, cheers Don.
Nice one Don. Do your coral trout carry Ciguatera?
-steve
muy bueno!!!!

dont blame me but I also use a musky rod as an inshore rod, I actually liked it that much that I rebuilt a factory one with my personal touch as you can see in the link.
Nice fish, handy rod, Steve, sorry I missed your question, about the ciguatera in the coral trout, fish dont get cigutera on the West side of Australia, only over East, I dont know much about it, some one else may chime in, I think the larger fish get it, over there, cheers Don.

A while back I used a Shimano Compre musky spinning rod to jig up amberjack and cobia. Worked great! ;D
This AJ somehow lost the rest of its body though, lol.
Guys a musky blank or rod is extremely useful. I am not a St. Croix fan boy. However St. Croix's glass Musky rods are some of the best rods for their rated class ever made. Please note the ratings as listed on these rods is a stretch. They are a bit heavier than their graphite counterparts. What you are getting is a completed rod that weighs less than say a United Composites unfinished, bare blank that will fish the same line class. In reality to compare them isnt really fair to either company. Completely two different animals.

thanks Boss, btw it was "MAS Bueno" the next day as Ceviche !! Sierra is one of the best fish for ceviche
Good picture der buddy, and Photo o de munth, dats waay good...... ;D
Nice shot Steelfish.
... and I thought I was one of the few that used a Musky rod for inshore. MY St Croix musky has been my go-to for jetty plugging for rockfish & lings for many seasons. The ability to fling artificials so easily and the rigidity to keep fish from going back into the rocks make the design perfect for it.
Nice one Alex! I've used musky rods for a long, long time- with 310's, 6500/7000's, Mag 10's, and still do. Was I supposed to just look at diamond jigs, bucktails and Hopkin's as surf lures and wait til "jigging rods" came out in the 2000's???? not hardly....
My fav was a Lamiglas, which was broken caused by people not putting things back properly. I was able to repurpose the handle, tho.
Thanks Rockfish ninja and John, I still remember that day LOL, the fishing rod performed really good with those big Spanish macks and king macks, I recall I was in search of a blank for inshore use but after using that musky rod almost exclusively the whole day I just changed guides for better quality ones and new wrap job.
Lamiglass and st.croix are the brands that musky guys prefer, Okuma has a musky rod with "new tech" graphite, mine is IM8 graphite, is pretty light and it feels kind of stiff in your hands but it bends really nice as soon as a fish bite.
@Gary, thanks buddy. feels like when you see your picture on the wall of the employee of the month :D :D
dude, you stole my fish....... ;D

Yes Sir,
That is a pissed off looser on the right !
I love catching Bull Reds on big spinners. They are a blast.
I have modified my fishing technique to include them in the line up.
Lose the carbs, and certain oils... and voila! My wife has had great success going Paleo. Our young son had a miracle breakthrough in terms of attention span "nixing the six". Our "fats phobia" hasn't done us much good over the last so many decades.

The Alphas platform is my favorite bar none. It's so versatile with many spool and gear options available. The Alphas platform ran from '04 to '19 with many different models over the years. The newer '20+ platform, while nice, doesn't seem to do much for me. Here's one of my Alphas CT SV reels, bought two of them last year when they the Japanese shops had a fire sale to make room for the '20 model. I have both a 7.2 and 6.3 ratio, picked them up for something like $140 each. Prior to the fire sale, they were $300 to $350 depending on where you bought it.

Great way to end my last day of the year fishing for me, Dec 1. The morning was pleasant and I caught a nice 45X21.5. The afternoon/evening was drizzle, cold, wet and miserable BUT I hooked into a 50X25.5 just shy of 41lbs. I look like a dork but the fish is a beauty.
