Title: What is your favorite braided line color?
Post by: Black Pearl on November 24, 2011, 04:27:25 AM
I am working on a braided line project. I found a premium quality fiber material for braided fishing line in Japan, and I brought it to a very high respect China factory to have it made it in a premium quality braided line. It has been little over a year, those testing lines have been performing very well. Therefore, I decided to make 50,000M = 54,500 yards in one color first. That is the reason I want to know what is a popular color.

Orange
Green
Blue
White
Pink
Yellow

Your input will really help me on it. If your choice is other, please pick one color from the following.

for a single color, white would be safest.  45 and 51 would be my next choices.  i like the camo braid from spiderwire.

The best selling color is Green, Brown, Blue, Red, I see a solid Black I wonder if that would sell ??? I use Tracer Braid, maybe a different color then Berkley Tracer Braid.

White. You can see it when live bait fishing. Also, all of the other colors come off and fade. Yellow is especially bad that way. Get white.

I only use FINS braided line. IMO its one of the best if not the best braided line on the market. It is also made in the US and their costumer service is one of the best I have seen from a fishing tackle company. I mostly fish inshore and use the wind tamer in 40lb so it does not dig in. For offshore the stretch or prt is what I use. I fish the pink or green. I will try the xs soon and give a review on it. Color dosent really matter as long as you use a flourish carbon leader jointed by a Albright, uni to uni or a Bimini twist

Some say that color does matter, they say that a red or orange color becomes invisable under water. I can't confirm that...i"m still not able to look out of the fish eyes :-\.

I prefer white as it's very visible and easily untangled when boat fishing with anglers most of whom use  green braid in this part of the World.

I have to agree with Ak and Jigger on the white. The yellow power pro died the fiberglass PERMANENTLY on my last boat on the gunnels under where the outrodders where positioned for trolling :(  I have white Jerry Brown on now and love how smooth it is.

Colors fade and change as the light is filtered through water, Red is the first color to to lose its reflected light in the light spectrum...
Any where from 3 to 30 ft deep depending on how clear the water is....

Now,  when that color is no longer reflected in the Spectrum..
The Pigment still shows as BLACK (no reflected color)....

Me...  If I was to try and outguess the nature of color and light spectrum and a fishes ability to see colors at all.....

I would go with a Blue or green...
Thinking (with minimal equipment to think at all)..
That it is a closer match to the water color, algae & seaweed etc (natural occurring vegetation) and less likely to be seen....??????

Will we ever know for sure????

Happy Turkey day!!!!!   Dont eat to much....

IMO that this is the answer.  Given that this is the answer, load up with something that we can see.  Most times that is very important.  We see the line until it disappears at the flouro carbon leader.  Dominick

Sorry I meant to say fluorocarbon (stupid auto correction). Color dosent really mater because flouro is virtually invisible to fish and as long as you had that as a leader material you should be good to go.

For inshore fishing..casting artificials along the bank, and "up under" mangroves from my kayak...
I choose colors like # 20. I want the brightest line possible. When I'm making a cast, seeing the line MYSELF is more important than whether or not a fish can see it. I use 3-4 ft. of light wt fluoro. leader to take care of what the fish will see. If I can see my line I can adjust the cast mid-flight to drop the lure where I want it. Since I'm obviously not a world-class caster...if my line/lure combo. "gets lost" against the background, it becomes more like "toss-and-hope".

Something to be aware of with Chinese braided line.  I bought a spool to try off of ebay, and it has a weird smell.  KInda smells like they didn't wash the lubricant out of it.  My Power pro and tuf line doesn't have the same smell.  I tried soaking it in mild dishwashing detergent (lemon joy like guys use for rinsing fishing tackle) that seemed to help for a little while but it still has a plasticy, petroleum sort of smell to it,......

Is this material color fast?  How does it compare to Spectra and Delrema for streingth?

Before I switch from Jerry Brown and Power Pro I'd have to be convenced your product is superior.  Will you make small samples, 3m-10m avalible for distructive testing?

There are a lot of very small manufactures in China making some real cheap fishing lines. They will even state that it is made from Spectra or Dyneema fiber material. They don't use the right process for those lines at all. You need to be very careful when buying stuff from the Mainland China.

I am going to use Japan Dyneema SK71. That is very similar to Spectra. It has high breaking strength, easy handling, near-zero stretch, and easy casting. All machines are made in Japan during all processing at the factory. I was at the factory personally to make sure about that. I have found a material to keep the color longer. It is still being tested.

Any braided line over 40lbs, I am going to use 8 strands, as you might know that 8 strands line is much rounder and smoother. Also, my braids are not hollow. You might wondered since there can be a core inside, then there must be a hole within. However, while braiding  them, fibers are arranged tightly, and that is why my braids are round one, not flat.

Any braided line is 30lbs or less, it will be using 4 strands.

Currently, I am thinking to produce 5000m (50m or 100m per spool) for initial market testing. As soon as I can decide the color and lb classes, I will have it starts right the way. If anyone want to try out my new line product, please let me know. Of course, I don't know the cost yet, but I will not make any money on this 5000m because you guys are testing for me.

If you are interested, please let me know. By the way, I have been testing its strength and quality, and it is very good product. Of course, I will still need some other people's opinion on it; there is where you guys will be needed.

Thank you all in advance.

I have tried Chinese Dyneema braid (white which is the original colour) in four and six strands and found it to be equal to other European Dyneema braids with regard to dia/bs. Where the Chinese braid failed was in the weave quality with loose open sections occurring every 100/150 metres approximately. Good luck with your venture BPFT.

Actually, there is no Dyneema made in China. Dyneema can be found or imported from Japan or Netherlands. The problem with loose open section is because the way it braids. It might even use a hand braids.

I can guarantee this is not like those braided lines you buy or have bought from China before.

How will this product compare to the feel of big name super braids? Are you going to list it by ABS or KBS? What will the Diameter/Breaking strength be like compared to other braids? (ABS-actual breaking strength/ KBS-knot breaking strength) Also I have a penn 525 that is in need of 300yds of 30lb if you want another tester.  ;D  Good luck with the product!

New to braid, only have one reel loaded right now. I am using Jerry Brown white, with an eight foot mono top shot. Why, you ask? Because the guys I fish with swear by it. And, the tackle shop where I had it spooled stocked it. Right now I'll say I can keep pace with the novices, but not the sharpies. However, one guy likes the multi colored depth counter line especially for bottom fishing. But aren't you always headed for the bottom when bottom fishing?

I've also heard that red does dissapear under water.

So red or white.

Keta, I understand the way it operates, and it's application. It really doesn't apply when bottom fishing. Because you are trying to fish absolute bottom. It may serve to let you know just how deep you are but, definitely has no practical use bottom fishing. If you are fishing the middle of the water column, it would seem to be an excellent tool.

Yup, it is.   My personal deep water halibut reels are set up with 200yds of 60lb green Power Pro on top of lots of hollow JB in white.  I use 10' 50lb mono topshots on these.  The charter reels are a mix of braid, mostly yellow for visibility when trolling but we use it for halibut.

BPFT, I'd be willing to look over and test a small sample but be warned, JB is just over the mountains from me and Jerry has always treated me well.  I will do a fair test though.

I have decided to get the sample line to be made in yellow between 50# to 80# in 5000M = app. 5460 yards. Half of that has been reserved for couple commercial captains testing in NC.

Thank you for all you guys input.

The following is the measurements on this line.

Line Diameter            10lb             12lb    15lb             20lb    30lb            40lb            50lb       60lb             80lb

I am interested in Diameter/Breaking strain of Braids as I have yet to find the manufacturers figures to be correct.  EG Dyneema  (European and Chinese) 40lb Bs=0.018"(0.46mm) Dia and 50lb Bs =0.020"(0.51mm) Dia. which both exceed the manufacturers stated figures.  I am interested as the Diameter is important when anchored in very deep water with  a 4Kt current running.

Letting just one on two guides test a product will not lead to any usable results.  You could compare it with a car manufacturer, that handle their newest
racecar over to the local mechanics for a test drive, and call it product testing.

What you normally do, is a combination of laborious wear tests, and handling the product out to various pro staff members for at least one season.

The biggest problem with braids are (abrasion) wear resistance, and that cannot be tested by a captain, even if he jigs or trolls with it from now to hell freezes over.

Have you considered having your line tested by this guy who appears to be extremely professional?

http://www.paulusjustfishing.com/

He's a great guy Strewth and highly respected.   He has the proper equipment to test braids and publish results. Cant see how a "Captain" or an individual can test a piece of 80lb braid by without having the facilities to do so. ;)

To answer your comment is that we do/did have a lab facility testing on the material and chemical. The lab testing report came back was good and the product was stabled. The second step would be put the product in the hand of the users. A lot of people we have contacted agree with that. If you don't like our way to put the product in the hand of a "Captain" or an individual for some more testing, I am sorry that it is not your cup of tea. That is a saying "Damn if I do, and Damn if I don't". We can't make everybody happy....

Hey Killerbug,

Thanks for the great demonstration of color visibility.  Red is definitely the first to go, but what surprised me most was the oranges remained strong and relatively vibrant.  I thought they would be next because they are next to red on the color wheel... I guess that was incorrect!  Nice way to prove a point ;)

Cheer up dude, I am a prostaffer myself for the US company Reactionstrike, we do tons of testing and product evaluations to ensure that our products rock!.  You should definitely build up a pro staff, like that you are much more in control of the whole evaluation process.

Thanks, the pictures are done by a German engineer friend of mine, who also catches some monster fish. But beware that some of colours are fluorescent, that won't show on photos. Also orange has a great deal of yellow in it, so that's probably why, it shows well.

I think Red is a great colour for a sea fishing line, highly visible at the surface but not in depth.

Don't take it to the wrong way, Killerbug. That comment I made was directed to the other member. We are in the process to setup a prostaff team in NC to work on the product testing in the field. Your comment is very helpful to us.

hi killerbug.
when it comes to testing braid you and i are on different planets.abrasion testing dont count.every fisherman knows that it is very poor around piers, rocks, and any other sharp objects.so connect a leader of mono or fluoro and problem solved.does it cast well, smooth or fluffy, retain water, ties well,1/3 breaking strain, not so important, most manufactures allow 25% extra.ME, i know after 1 session if it suits me.i cant speak for anybody else if they like it or not.im just interested in a fishing situation and most tests can be done at home prior to fishing.colour dont count, use a bit of fluoro.cheers.

Sure, but I still think abrasion resistance is an important feature of any braid.  Even if you use a shock leader, you can still get caught up in the the keel(or engine) with certain fish species.  But of course it depends on what kind of fishing you do.

Now that I'm finally thinking about it, I like #18 for the main reason is that my friends, those that are deep water free divers (you know, the ones that hang out in 10,000 deep water waiting for an Ahi, Mahi Mahi, marlin,... to swim by, their wetsuits are patches of different color blues and black.

Color doesn't matter to me as long as it's highly visible.  Black is not good since I fish at night as well as during the day, and need to see the line easily.  Red is the same as black.  Bright yellow and white have been the best.

On another issue (mentioned earlier), there are a lot of anglers in Hawaii who would like to use braid, but who cannot due to the lack of abrasion resistance.  Some people do use it in their casting reels, but always use a "top shot" of about 150 yards mono.  With this amount of top shot, the advantage of the smaller diameter of braid is greatly reduced, so most people here just don't use it.  Admittedly, there are some who are interested in color for the additional "bling" it might give to their reels.  For the vast majority, it's the low abrasion resistance characteristic that is the main issue.  If anyone could address that problem, I think virtually everyone here would change over quickly (if the cost were competitive with mono).

Color may be important for marketing, but many here have gotten past that point when it comes to fishing line, and are only concerned with how well it works.  If i could find a braid with excellent abrasion resistance, comparable to or better than mono, I'd switch even it the color were black/red as that would be a far less important secondary consideration.  It wouldn't matter to me if there was no color to the braid at all (white or clear, or whatever the natural color of Dyneema is).

What was the color choice and also test # ?  Not able to give input because I only pull plugs in river for salmon and steelhead.

I work & fish on open boats mostly so I have been using mainly bright colors.

Yellow

White

Orange

These colors keep my line visable to other people on board. In N.Y. I can use a top shot from 3' - 50' according to where you are fishing.

Still have a lot of green Tuff line left. (Coupla 1200yds of 80lb and one of 60.)
But nowadays it's either yellow for fishing.
or Multi. every ten.  for jigging.

I used YGK Multi for a while. But found it very slippy on the knots.
Actually lost a coupla lengths at the knot. And good fish.
Never happens with the Tuff.
Tried a few others but Tuff as good.
Never let me down yet,and a good price in comparison..
Mate uses dark red. But I can never see it once in water.
I like to see where it's going\coming from.

I tried white. But round here (Central Q'land) we get lots of river run off
with the regular floods in the wet.  and it gets dirty. real quick..
Looks real crap. real quick.

Well i saw something about charter captains in nc testing, and if you meant north carolina then i might not be a charter captain but i could do some lbsf and kingfishing from the pier test ;)
