Title: New project...113H
Post by: Big Tim on April 24, 2014, 02:12:09 AM
OK so now I have serviced a 2spd. Rebuilt a 112H & now it's time to do a little more. I recently sold a bunch of old tackle, rods & reels to upgrade and finance my first long range trip. One of the reels I sold just happened to be my oldest sons favorite reel. I did replace it with a brand new Avet LX 4.6:1 and took him fishing so he could try it out. His response was I love the new Seeker rods and Avet reels but I like my old star drag better :( :-\ >:( ... So the idea pops into my head to sell the LX which I did and build him a star drag for his birthday  ;D ;D ;D Thanks to Mel I have found the reel & I acquired an Accurate frame and spool.
I need SS gear sleeve and AR dog...Penn 349 handle...Maybe 4:1 gears?  & drag set.

the reel

The plates are clean and waiting parts:

Alan has a crank arm that is like the 349 but stainless. I absolutely love them. You also then get to choose the handle.

Funny, I am looking to do a 112H but with a Tiburon frame. I am also going to do a Jigmaster with the Tiburon frame and add the Stainless gears. They seem like nice upgrades for a decent price. I also like my Star drags. I want something new but I really like my reels. Since they work well, I really can't justify buying new higher priced reels.

Used ones are occasionally available on eBay and elsewhere; new ones --especially plates-- are very rare, and becoming more so by the day.  :-\

Tiburons, happily, are still in good supply.   :)

If you'll spool it with multifilament, I suggest the narrow kit. If not you know what...:);D

Tim, thats very nice of you to customize a reel for your son. I would suggest a set of Pro Challenger gears available from Black Pearl on this site. They are the best gears you can buy IMHO. You will also need a stainless steel yoke.  Bob

What is the preferred right plate for a project like this. The one shown, or the one with the open drag that can be serviced without taking the reel apart?

I'm about to go down this road and have 6 113h's to choose from.

Great project by the way. Following this post daily. Love the pics, the frame looks great.

Thanks...I'm new to this and I really don't have an educated opinion on the plate...One piece seems to me might be stronger? But I'm sure Dr. Tankenstien "Alto Mare" would have the right answer.

If you are double dogging the reel the open drag side plate is easier to assemble but there are ways around the problem if you have a closed drag side plate.

You still have to take the plate off to access the drags TechTeach. On the Larger Senators, You can change a main gear without having to take the plate off. I did this to a 14/0 recently.

I happen to have all open drag plates, but that just happened that way, I do n't believe there is a huge advantage functionally.

Right, it's just a little harder to keep the drag stack in place with the closed stack side plates, especially with a non standard stack.  The 114H is easier than the 113H.

I just thought structurally with 2 pieces and multiple pieces of hardware involved that the 1 piece could have an advantage. Lees is More??

Can't you get at the drag washers by just removing the handle and star with the open style? I know I have done it before.

Any strength concerns withe either design?

I think I'm going to go open because I like the look of the older reels.

Stay tuned, maybe I'll start a build thread soon. Forecast is for a week worth of rain for us in the northeast. No boat work so I guess it's reel time.

When you can put the drag stack into the gear when the bridge is attached to the side plate you don't have to deal with the ear of an eared washer hang up on the gear.

I'm in over my head...I'm so new that my camera is in B & W  ;D I still think less is more..Less moving part is = to less failure. No matter the ease of accessibility to the drags and related components if in cased in a solid platform the overall integrity and structural strength should increase ? Tim

There is actually no more parts, just a different type of spacer.  The open drag probably allows more water into the reel but that's one of the things drag grease is for.

Thank you for the education Lee...I would like to see one up close and see if the opening for the larger spacer is the same thickness as the closed drag plate.

Need a little help! Ok I mocked up the reel for my son & I have a spacing problem...Whether I use the original spool or the aluminum spool when put together and the left side bearing screwed all the way in I still have too much side to side play? Do I need to take off the inner rings ? is there a way to shim/space the bearings to take up the slop ?

The new Tiburon frames do not use the inter rings but from the photos you have the old frame.

How much slop are we talking Tim? The only full accurate frame I have dealt with is a 9/0 and I used the inside rings with adjustable bearing as you have and didn't have an issue.

I agree with Bryan, it is not uncommon to have to stuff a washer behind the left hand bearing inside the cup to remove slop.

Most times it's the right side bearing that needs shims.
The spool need to be centered, his appears to be too far to the right already, but can't really tell from his pictures.

Very creative with the shim.  You will probably need 1/16 of that thicknss.

Time to do another project, it's a reel disease when it's AR's we call it Black Rifle Disease. I have 3-5.6's,a 6.8 SPC, and a 308, and I was able to quit.
