I have a reel from a new member here. His name is Ryan. He has a reel that belonged to his grandfather he wants to soup up.
He trolls for wahoo with heavy weights and he said this reel can't hold them while trolling.
I will take care of that.
Its an oldie, but a goodie.
The first obstacle is finding a one piece spool for this Dinosaur to handle some bigger drag numbers.
I searched for a few days and was starting to worry. These old bushing reels cant use newer spools designed for bearings.
The author of our Penn Bible, Mr. Mike C. offered a trade for the three piece in this one.
It should arrive today.
I have all the parts in stock to turn this old reel into a fishing machine. Stay tuned.
Daron, is Ryan getting a Corteze/Tom H. Frame on this build?????
Of Course!
Full Monty on this one.
Tanking a 9/0 is probably the most expensive of any other Senator because of the frame addition.
You are talking $400 in parts.
When finished, I think the 9/0 packs more punch than any other model.
Frame, ss sleeve and double dogs, BP Gears, insert, SS handle, yoke and 5/0 Kokelar grip.
You will have a 9/0 that can handle 50 lbs of drag easily.
That is a lot to hold on to.
I don't do a lot of custom builds for members. It is too much of a chore if I can't keep it.
Ordering all the parts from at least seven different members is not an easy task for a newcomer.
Hey,
Its for his grandpa's reel, and this guy has a passion for fishing.
Just paying it forward. ;)
Daron your a good guy. I recently did the same build. Only difference was I did it with the Penn steel gears, not Alan C's gears. So I was able to save some $$$ there. This is the biggest reel in my Arsenal. It's pretty darn impressive. Can't wait to see the end result👍🏻
Im in ;) Daron is spot on. Holding on to that at high drag wouldn't be recommended. We mainly troll with bent butts rod and fight the fish from the rod holder with a leash. We troll any where from 11-16 knots and when we have a hook up we dont slow down. Its been noted that if you slow down the weight will drop causing the hook to pull. Tension is key, I cant wait to have this reel back to be pulling some big weights and wahoo lures and hear that loud clicker go off. Daron is a stand up guy for doing this and I cant thank him enough for upgrading this American made machinery. If anybody is interested in an episode of "reel time" Palm beach high speed wahoo fishing edition, feel free to check it out at this link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzsTc376SDk This episode features a guy by the name of E money and is a very well respected wahoo fisherman in our area.
I have built the same for guys using the stock steel gears. It saves a bunch of money.
I watched a show on tv that showed them trolling for Wahoo in that way. They hook up and just reel them in. In the show they weren't big Hoo's like we get here in the Gulf. I assume big ones can be brought in the same way. They were using a 9/0 and a larger Senator reel.
Keith
Very Nice, Id like to see one caught on your new build!
I can see a hoo being caught on my build in the near future :D you're right majority of our Florida east coast hoos arent very big. Most are 20-30lbs with a few 50s. Maybe il get the chance to visit san sal/rum cay or harbor cay in the future. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uLYJuN_FOA
Sorry to hijack the thread Daron. I promise no more vids hahah lets get back to 9/0 talk
Extreme interest on this one. Point one is counter balanced handle, never seen that on 9/0. Point two: I'm building two 9/0 this weekend. Point three I built my high speed hoo trollers a couple weeks back. Start a thread for that as we are just getting into that piece. I will share my setup to troll high speed and quickly switch off too bridle planer for 6-7 knots.
Regard
Thorhammer
Sweet thorhammer. Are your high speed wahoo trollers 9/0s? If so do you use the front rod brace? Due to the upgraded frame i am considering not getting one. When i got this reel the brace was missing. Will gladly accept others opinion on this too.
I set mine up on standard width 80's, because I had them and scored a pair matching bent butt penn rods on the cheap a month ago. I set my full-on 9/0 up to shark from shore: 600yds of 100 lb braid topped with a couple hundred 80 mono. The other 9/0 will be set similarly but in stock configuration. I'm also missing the braces but they will indeed be on next Scott's order. I mean, you go full monte and leave off the brace can you? :)

I've never encountered a 9/0 with the brace, that wasn't put on there by the owner. It's only $18 from SBT, so a small investment to help strengthen the reel. I plan on putting one on mine, and my 114HLW.
Are you going to be fishing this reel from a harness? I don't think the front brace does anything unless you are pulling on the top of the reel from a harness. I would definitely use the front brace if planning to use a harness. But the brace only supplies support in tension. If you are fishing with no harness and a front brace, then it seems that any flexing of the reel or real seat caused by the fish pulling hard would only cause the front brace to lose some of its tension. I.E. it wouldn't be doing anything. At least as far as I can tell.
I plan on putting one on mine, and my 114HLW.
Where are you going to attach it on your 114HLW? There are no front lugs on 114H or HLW.
Before I even start, I need to make sure the one piece spool fits.
And it Does! Thank You Mike! You really saved my butt on this one! ;)
Doesn't look too bad for being 50 years old. Are those Bronze gears?
Oh, that is rust. These gears are toast. They served this reel well.
All ready for assembly. Plate cut for double dogs, insert in the BP gear, parts polished, upper Delrin cut, Ready to fit the sleeve and I hit a snafu. >:(
The bridge has a smaller post. I'm not going to let that stop me. To be Continued.
I plan on attaching the leash to the reel clamp. I like the looks without a brace but when it comes down to it I don't want to gamble with a reel so special. Even tho I agree with you Bryanc, im thinking il be going the "better safe than sorry" route. Il be getting a brace. Wow it shined up beautifully!! Sorry about the issue. I know you'll come through on that and for that i am grateful.
Here is the bridge in question. I remember Tom having the same issue,

Nicely done, but I expected no less. Love that handle blade.
Nicely done, Daron. I understand the problem with the post/gear sleeve, but I don't understand your solution....

I would say he just got a later bridge that was the correct size.
I took one out of another reel Sid.
Its phenomenal!! Dam i'm excited. That handle looks so perfect. Im itching to test it out. All wahooooooo pics will be posted here. You have a gift Daron. I would have been lost doing all that
Only from what I have learned here Ryan. Wait until you feel how comfortable that handle setup is. ;)

Doh! Does that still leave you with a mismatched set?
Sid
It leaves me with a reel that needs a bridge. ;)

;D
That's first class client service!
If it were any other Senator that gets the Hot Rod treatment, I would have had a spare.
My Man Fred already hooked me up.
One thing I need to add about this build. There is a hole on either side of these bushing reels that doesn't quite line up with Tom's frame.
It takes all of five seconds to remedy. The correct drill bit through the rings and plate.
Great work Daron

Great work Daron
I'm with Justin. Good job Daron. Dominick
I'm looking forward to the day I see Darren's picture on here wrestling a really big shark from the surf with one of his hot rodded winches. ;D ;D ;) ::)
Looking good Daron, his grandfather would be proud of your work for sure.
Chad
What a great thread. Reread again.
Beautiful job on the reel Daron. I have a couple just like that sans the drag insert. Maybe I should "upgrade" my reels... ::)
Are the inserts still available for the 115s?
I Believe Adam has a few. He has his own space here now.
Yes, the insert kits are still available. I have 5 kits left after the ones for dogtagger.

Way to GO Ryan....So you showed us a picture, but we NEEEEEEED the back story brother......Bill
It is Humbling to see your work pay off and make a Happy Fisherman! ;)
Great Job Ryan! That is one big Hoo! :o
Pic worth a thousand words. It would take a world class hoo to make a Daron 9/0 break a sweat.
Top shelf...love the 9/0...it's a beast...especially when massaged to perfection like this one! 8)
Daron,
What a great thread and story, you rock!
Darin
Thanks! ;)
Great job Daron, with working long hour, & all your hobbies, I dont know were you get the time, your a good man alright, cheers Don.
Revive an old thread here.
Ryan actually wore this reel out after almost 9 years.
Going to make it like new again.
Can't wait to see....and now I don't recall which 9/0 I backed with braid...
It's gotta be heartening to see that reel come back to you worn out from someone putting it to use as designed. Nice job to both of you
What wore out?
Yeah, interested to see.
I haven't got it yet, but I am thinking it's the drag washers in the insert kit.
I dunno what else it could be...
He told me he took it to a shop and they removed one of the drag washers?
I'd say they did something else that caused the drag to give out.
Still don't have it yet.
OK,
Looking at this reel, It has been fished very hard.

Black grease oozing out. It was blue when it left here. (https://flic.kr/p/2qq5aGt)
Whatever Clown reel repair that worked on this had no idea what they were doing.
If you couldn't replace the slotted washers, just replace the gear to a standard stack, instead of doing that, they put regular 9/0 washers in a slotted gear and not even close to being stacked correctly.
Every screw on the handle side was loose. Even the handle.
He said they told him they replaced one drag washer? They only left one correct drag washer.

She is like new again. Gears were still tight and new slotted washers.
I am only going to charge shipping. This is the last set of washers I have.
This reel is very unique cause it has a one piece spool and bushings.
It was his Grandfathers and I am honored to make it new again for him.
A very wise man told me to pay it forward.

Great job man,,,, ;)
Woooohoooo! That soldier is ready for battle again. Bravo Zulu brother. Bill
Great save on that 70yo 9/0 Daron, you're the man!! Fully tanked with the new drag stack, handle and arm, and a Cortez half frame !!!
Otto Henze would be proud of your passion for the old Penns.
Now it's ready for another 70 years of fishing
The "clown" prolly wasn't at all familiar with the slotted gear/washer thing. You're right though, why wouldn't he not just replace the gear and keep the eared/keyed washer system? Was the slotted unit an insert in the gear?
I thought we decided that those insert drag washers were not a good idea because the carbon fiber nubs are not strong enough? Anyway, that was my take-away from the discussions.
I thought that too Steve.
These were from Alan Chui. aka Black Pearl. Now known as Pro Challenger.
The Insert that Adam Made.(Motive Fabrication) were different and not as well made as this system.
The washers fit very tight and it took him 9 years to wear them out.
I am very surprised the gears are still like new.
Sal was instrumental in having these made and I was always folowing his lead.
This thing puts out some Phenomenal drag.
No one understands and appreciates the big Penns like Daron.
It is the smallest details that set Daron's reels apart from the herd.
Couldn't be better.
Hope he appreciates and understands what you have built for him, Daron.
Best, Fred
Thank you as always! The next goal with that reel will be tuna chucking for yellowfin tuna south of Grand Bahama in the providence channel. The tuna is only half the battle. Keeping it away from the over population of sharks is the other half. Not if, but when successful you fellas will see the pics here first. We have a crossing in December to harbor cay and im hopeful we get into them. If not spring time is always more promising. For the December trip she will be off wahoo weight duty and rigged strictly for tuna mode. Also, fun fact. She has a sister reel that belongs to my boss. A hot rodded diawa 900h done by Alan years ago. This reel also sentimental belonging to my boss's wife's father who used to fish it years ago in roatan. Recently I added some heat shrink to his handle and im pretty happy with the slight upgrade. The penn will probably follow. This sure is a fun group. Thanks everyone especially you Daron. I knew I shouldn't have taken it anywhere else, but for the record my biggest fear is shipping the reel and it getting lost in the mail. I will never make that mistake again.
Good job!
This reel is some of my greatest work.
It may look old and battered, but it puts out 70lbs of drag.
Not too shabby for a 70 year old reel.
With 70 pounds of drag, I would be the guy being dragged across the beach. In the sand it leaves two furrows from two heels and a skinny butt-slide trench in between them. ;)
Bang. If you want the best, go to the best.
Haven't heard a peep since I sent it back to him.
Didn't even confirm he received it?
I better see some pics soon.
Shucks Daron, if anyone knows this person, tell him to contact Daron and show some respect, we all know the detail you put into these reels, cheers Don.
Ouch! Sorry guys, No excuses but i do have trouble logging in at times. I'm just not on here enough(my fault) Truth be told That big trip I mentioned above didnt happen due to weather. Sorry thats not the exciting story I want to tell but its the truth. Some little back story details about myself. I'm actually not a boat owner, I do however work for a great dude as a captain. Sometimes fishing just isnt his number 1 priority (as it is mine and i'm sure all of you). Its more of a happy wife happy life vibe with him, Cocktail crusing and sandbars>wahoo and tuna fishing unfortunatly. I tend to get that wahoo fishing itch NOW! in the fall and winter months when the water temps drop, we see more in our waters. We do get them here in the summer, but I dont have it in me as much with the heat...boring i know but again, truthful.
Good news as of now, We are schedueled to cross over on to the bahamas october 18th. My fingers are crossed. Im pushing very hard to wahoo fish. BUT..gotta keep the person who signs my checks happy(and the wife ;)...politics. Not complaining, but that is the situation. Speaking of fishing, that leads me to the most important part of this post.
Daron- My respect for not only your knowledge, but your efforts on all youve done for this reel is through the roof. I sincerly apologize for not keeping in touch. I mean it. It has everything to do with not being the best computer guy, nothing to do with not caring or being appreciative. I have a custom anodized tiagra 80w and a custom tiagra cerokoted 50w. Soooooo what...fun projects but to me they just dont compare to my favorite reel in the arsenal which is by far grandpa's 9/0 hot rodded by the best there is..Daron. Nothing will take away how sentimental and special this reel is.
I'd rather you guys think I suck at fishing ;D then to think im disrespectful or unappreciative. Truthful, but the reasons theres no pics posted, is because theres just no recent pics to post with fish that the hot rod has caught...embarrassing but humble. I'd like to thank everyone esspecially Daron whose enjoyed this thread following along. It's definitely one of the coolest brotherhoods iv experienced. I wish everyone tight lines and luck while out there doing what we love catching fish. I'm very hopeful to post pictures in the future, I just need to make the pictures happen before the post can. Thanks all!
Here's a couple I got right before reel went in last year (2nd time). We fish a 5 line spread. My goal has been to get one of these awesome fish to hit the right reel!! It's caught a nice hoo since Daron has originally hotrodded it, Its posted above but i'm still waiting for a nicer fish to hit that reel since Daron had it in Late 2024(2nd time). My absolute plan is to make that happen. Id like to add the wear Daron mentioned in the thread is also likely do to catching bull sharks and goliath groupers with the kids. Just stating that one nice hoo and a couple smaller hoo didnt do all that wear. (the fish never stand a chance fyi) All thanks to Daron. Those sharks and goliaths are a true test to Daron's art. The wahoos eventually Gas, but the long runs are amazing against the drag Daron built. Its the best of both worlds...Fast runs from hoos, and locked down strength when going after goliaths. They like to run into the wreck we fish so they must be stopped. The reel does the job. Daron's work is proven!
That is sweet! Nice 'Hoos! - john
Ryan,
I totally understand how life can get in the way of things and no apology is needed.
I appreciate you and your comments.
My Main Goal was to make you happy and I think I accomplished that.
I am actually in Florida right now, but once again the seaweed is killing the fishing.
Fish on my Brother!

Hoo, dat's nice!
Daron for the mods, Alan for the basics, have both schooled me well in my first journeys into Conventional's .
Daron, is there any city outlet pipes close to where you're fishing? Maybe the water there is being fertilized.
It's Sargassum. Right Daron? It's a floating weed that propagates in the Sargasso Sea area in middle of the Atlantic. Like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the floating weed is sort of held in place by the North Atlantic Gyre. Clumps break free to eventually wash up on beaches. The Sargassum has always been out there and it has always washed up on beaches when the wind and currents are right. But there have noticeable changes in the last few decades. The amount of weed has increased dramaticaly and they think it's a response to higher nutrients. The whole darn ocean is ringed in outlet pipes. When I was a kid there would sometimes be a 4 inch layer of weed on Gulf Beaches. Now they measure the covering in feet. As we speak there is a belt of Sargassum clearly visible from space that stretches from just west of Africa to the Gulf of MexicoAmerica and it is all expected to end up on beaches.
Sargassum is a unique habitat. The floating algae is full of sea creatures ranging from fish and crustacean larvae/juveniles to young sea turtles. I think there are some species that are found nowhere else. It's fun to grab a fresh hand full and shake all the critters out on the deck of a surfboard to see what's there. As the weed is rolled in the surf and washes ashore all the marine life is dislodged. It is probably a bonanza for surf fish that feed on them. But, the weed can make hook-and-line fishing impossible from shore. Offshore, rafts of Sargassum weed are a good place to look for mahi mahi.
oh....sorry...... back to 9/0's
That stuff has cost me more braid than any fish or structure. Combined with small, lapping waves, it's a recipe for disaster
Tight lines amigo, If youre in the jupiter area pm me. Lost a good pompano sunday and got 2 just short snook
