Title: How to remove permanent maker off aluminum spool?
Post by: FatTuna on May 12, 2016, 10:46:59 PM
Anyone know a good house hold chemical to remove permanent marker? I bought four 9500SS spools off a guy and he labeled the spools with writing. I feel like I can get it off if I find the right product.

Here are some pics.

Anyone know what type of line that looks like. The guy who sold them to me said it was Jerry Brown. Does JB come in this color?

What, like Jiffy Marker? Anything alcoholic or oily... WD-40, rubbing alcohol, vodka, cooking oil, gasoline, an insistent thumb... anything.

.

I tried WD-40 and a toothbrush. It didn't appear to do much.

I have no idea what he used..... Aside from the marker they all look and feel close to new. I couldn't pass them up. Came with extra spools and two rods.

People do strange stuff to fishing reels sometimes..... At least he didn't carve his initials into the side. That drives me crazy.

I'm going to start off with the rubbing alcohol because I already have some. If that doesn't work, I'll see if I have some acetone.

I'm thinking he may have used a paint pen.

If this isn't too far off topic, I got permanent marker out of a cork grip by scrubbing it with toothpaste on my fingertip.  It wasn't inspiration on my part, but something uncovered in a Google search, and worked amazingly well.

X3... but use caution (a Q-tip would be good). Don't get it on the spool's lb-test label, that's pretty intense stuff and will melt it right off.  :)

Denatured alcohol, saturate thoroughly with a Terry cloth towel, and wipe away.

I use Acetone.   The line looks like solid JB green.

Funnily enough...BenGay heat rub will take it off skin.
Might work on metal as well?

Try a garage type cream hand cleaner. It works great for stuff like that along with other stubborn stuff and does not affect the finish.

plastic safe contact cleaner also works. takes marker off auto paint without damaging the paint so it should be great for a spool
