I'm just curious why this site doesn't have an official logo????
Then we could make up stickers, hats and shirts....
There are so many creative people here, maybe we could make a contest out of it?

Thats kind of what I was thinking....get a couple designed and we vote on the favorite
That's funny I was just thinking the same thing Monday morning....Bill
I think it was because this site was never intended to be a commercial website or brand, but lets wait to the Boss to hear what he have to say about it
Im all for stickers, tshirts, etc
Me too
3X!!!
I'm invisioning a gleaming hot-rodded fishing reel in front of a globe with a surrounding ring/wreath of various common fishing reel parts and/or service tools.
Maybe just a galaxy-like swirled pile of reel parts forming into a reel.
Just brainstorming out loud.
I have no graphic arts skills, to speak of.
I like the way the forum is now,.. low profile and no advertisers and new members are mostly referred by friends or word of mouth.
Bumper stickers etc would no doubt attract some good people, but may also attract some bad elements, like more spammers, and I doubt the boss wants that.
I'd be more in favor of a hat, t-shirt and jacket and a cool logo would be a must.

I in no way meant this as a way to get advertisers....just thought it would be cool to have gear (hats/shirts etc) to show off when the "family" gets together....

yep, thats a good thinking, maybe just a selected logo and a phrase like (just example) reel repair addict, reel repair junkie or something not closely relate to alantani.com, we will know what thats means but it wont bring spammers and trolls to the site
I really like the different angles people are bringing, and think there is wisdom in avoiding too much merchandise.
It would be nice if it happens and any "profits" can go to Alan's charity taking kids fishing.
I vote for hats. Anyone can have these made online. Just an example.
Stickers get my vote.
Very inexpensive to make and you can put them everywhere. I agree that proceeds should go to Alan's charity.
Tom
I like T-shirts.. mostly cause they are 2 sided.
T-shirts with pockets!
Just messing around,
I think it is a good idea, caps T shirts, stickers & jackets, I am not sure what it costs to run this sight, would help, & whats left over going to Kids funds ect:. cheers Donnyboat.
This'd be cool.
We could fund the site and Alan's kid fishing work and show support.
I'm going to weigh in with a simple AT wrench with the AlanTani.com engraving. Simple yet is says what the site is all about. However, Alan has not weighed in so my feeling is he is not happy with the idea. Dominick
I'd love a T-shirt... even better, a nice embroidered jacket for Long Range trips. 8)
~A~
Once Alan weighs in and approves/disapproves I could try a few things (I do Signage for a living). I'm a Project Engineer not Graphic Designer, but I've done quite a few logos for breweries, local restaurants and friends business's.

We've talked about it several times and loved the unity idea of our Ohana, but then talked about resources and storage of the shirts/caps/jackets. Resources...neither of us has the resources to cover this at the moment. We would likely require a deposit to cover some or all of the costs, but both Alan and I don't like to take money without being able to deliver the goods immediately. Then there's the logo...I do like the Penn Wrench with AlanTani.com on the sleeve, but we still need a logo that represents the
reel problems we all have. ;D
Something that just came to mind....
Reel Ohana
<Picture of a Convention, Bait Caster, or Spinner>
AlanTani.com
on the front pocket and rear.
One quick thought...I'm really tired of cheap crappy T-shirts, hoodies and hats. Whatever does get done, we need to do it on quality product...Like Carhartt T-Shirts (Or similar) and Flex-Fit Hats (Or Similar)...the cheap $5 shirt and $10 hat to me is garbage and not worth buying. Just my opinion though...
The agency I work for just purchased polo shirts made by Corner Stone had them embroidered with our seal on one side and name on the other, by a local small business (well just him and his wife out of their house) and our cost was $35per shirt...the Corner Stone polo is similiar to the 5/11 brand but at a reasonable price....bill
I was adopted into a small local fishing club several years ago.
It's called the "fishing idiots". Membership is by nomination from current members. one must have done "something" on the water that inspires the current membership to declare your status as a fishing idiot or just simply an idiot. I don't want to bore you with the details of what I may have done to deserve this recognition, but some examples might be, running out out of gas and continuing to fish while waiting for assistance, perhaps you might have tried to install a spare battery while under way and accidentally cross wired the battery causing an explosion and fire on an aluminum boat! Or one might have run out of gas on the water, more than once! Or one might use the engine propeller as a downrigger! One may have hooked a fish and then another fish and while fighting one fish the other rod and reel that are hooked up gets yanked overboard and a brand spanking new, first time on the water g looms rod and penn torque goes overboard never to be heard from again, but you don't care because you just landed the biggest salmon of your life! Anyway these are just ahem! Examples of things that one might or might not have done which would undoubtedly secure your membership as an FN Idiot!
Even we got t shirts!
if someone were to volunteer or be nominated to spearhead the project and garner a bit of support from the moderators and chief we could review concepts etcetera here onsite and ultimately collect funds in advance with a fixed donation to the youth fishing program and an agreed flat rate shipping fee included in the t shirt / hat / sticker, price.
Then one person would have to pay for, receive and ship the individual orders to members. Not impossible just a minor pain in the you know what.
And remember you get what you pay for, if you want quality it's going to cost more.
Messing around for a couple minutes, this is just getting ideas down on 'paper'; more of digital sketching in my opinion. I'll do more the next few nights...

I would love a good quality T shirt with alarge pocket, but the emblem of reel ohana, may be a bit to long to fit on the pocket ?. cheers Donnyboat.
never heard of ohana, whats ohana?
there will be lots of people never heard of it
cheers
G'day Wallace, I'm pretty sure ohana is Hawaiian for 'family' - I don't think we could get an OZ term like "Reel Mob" off the ground, even if Rothmar2 and exp2000 voted.
Mike
Possibilites are endless guys, I'll do a few more tonight and the next coming days. Since we aren't in a hurry it helps not make this stuff stressful. I'm open to ideas to, just don't be offended if every single one doesn't get to the vector art stage. Drawing out a full conventional or spinning reel takes some time, so I won't get into specific reels per se, but maybe I'll do a generic of each. Probably like a Senator and a SS (obviously leaving off any logos or verbiage).
Correct on the Ohana Mike.
I threw in the term Nomad for the various areas with only a few members, but I can certainly get some other artwork together with other places. I was going to do something with 'Syndicate' in it...but as this is such a friendly place, dark words and Old English fonts don't hold true to the ideals around here, :D
i like the star logo on the top right. simple and to the point. "what a drag" is pretty funny, too!!!!! ;D

I'm with Sal. Make that 2 votes for "reel Ohana"
Very nice work Dan
I woild agree with Tom on stickers, but add embroidered patches --
If a patch costs us $4 -- charge $8 -- with any profits after overhead going to Discover Angling efforts.
I would be good with whatever is decided upon as a logo, as long as Alan approves and is on board with it.
But since there are so many applications -- and it could get expensive, time consuming and cumbersome to organize for one or two people.
(For example -- can I get it in red?, can you ship it fedex?, does it come with pockets?, what other colors?, is the color permanent, or will it fade?, there is a bad seam on mine -- can I return it?, I need Ex long, or XXXL, do you have women's fit? -- it just goes on...)
Just pick out the best design we all agree on (Alan primarily) -- then do embroidered patches and stickers.
Then it could go on jackets, hats, T shirts, work shirts, denim shirts, tackle bags, and anything else you prefer.
The stickers can go on boats, trucks, cars, tackle boxes, rod cases, rocket launchers, tool boxes, or anywhere.
The key is to get a simple, clear, and uncomplicated logo that is instantly recognized and accepted worldwide that we can be proud to display and wear.
Stickers are inexpensive and effective.
Embroidered patches are also cheap and flexible nowadays.
As for sewing them on to various items -- yes, we can do it, or our wives can do it (gets expensive there).
However, what I did was just take it down to the uniform store where we purchase our fire gear -- they have expert people who will sew them on shirts or jackets professionally with a machine for $2 each.
Just my thoughts, as everyone weighs in.
Best,
Fred
I think the patch is a great Idea Fred.
Just the sizing in the T-Shirts would be a pain.
I tried to design one with the Schematic of a Long beach on the back.
The price was $50 a shirt!
I just got some proofs back for Cortez stickers, easy and inexpensive. One size fits all!
I think the patch and sticker idea is awesome.
Dry cleaners that also do sewing/hemming will probably sew the patches on, as well.
I vote patches and stickers
Like Fred said that way anyone can put them on whatever they want....
(PS I'm glad this topic is getting some feedback...i was worried maybe i overstepped my bounds as a new member of this forum whom no one has met)
I could do it if we are all in agreement. I can always solicit help from my kids in packing and shipping.
My vote would be first T-shirts with the Reel Ohana design on the back and the upper right star with AlanTani.com and underneath would read What a Drag! on the front pocket.
For caps, I like the star on the front with what a drag on the rear of the cap.

Appreciate your ideas, PJ --
We all know that the member who started yesterday has as much worth as the guy who has been on for 5 years.
Respect and equality are the hallmarks of this site -- with an emphasis on family (Ohana).
We all need to contribute -- as we do, the site develops into a repository of knowledge along with integrity.
Best,
Fred
i like patches &stickers,cheap & effective
large & small patches
large patch for t-shirt,buy your own shirt, sew it on,cheap postage.
smaller patch for chest
there is a lot of overseas members
change ohana to family for the same reason if you go for that
jm with whatever you decide
i dont like the idea of compulsory donations even for the kids
if you want to donate by all means donate
to me donations are a personal thing
we are getting commercial,its unavoidable
cheers
I like patches to, I take me to my local laundry and the sew me on for cheap, plus patches last a long time and like others have said you can put them on anything.
Looks like patches and stickers may be the best way to go. One size fits all and not a storage, size, or color problem.
Let me see if We can make those iron on prints. We can roll it up and send it in a tube. Light and you can iron on to your own shirt.
Iron on peels off won't last a year. I can make a good patch last the rest of my life! I got some that are 30 yrs old already.

Can you imagine a 1' patch on the back of your t-shirt?
The iron on or standard patch that big would make me sweat like a PIG! Haha. How about we start simple and see how it goes? Just do a vector art decal that is contour cut, offer it in 3x sizes and 3x colors. This will allow for some feedback and interest. You could stick these on rods, mugs, cars, rods, boats...
For the Ohana, this is my simple opinion, it creates a topic of conversation. Example: You are out fishing on a party/head boat and people see the decal on your cooler/shirt/whatever...they ask you what it means...your response is 'it means family' and you can explain it...thus creating the conversation about this place and its benefits. Just a thought...
My wife has a good friend that owns a screen-printing business, I'll try to reach out to him and see what a quality t-shirt with a pocket logo and rear logo would cost (not quite sure I'm ready to take on the t-shirt endeavor, but its worth asking).
Sorry, had a nice family night last night, so no new artwork. Monday I'll post up some more.
I have a good conversation going on now about T-Shirts with a vendor (the friend of my wife's)...They may be a lot cheaper than we thought for quality shirts and hoodies. I'm doing a mock-up example for him on some t-shirt photos JUST FOR PRICING, NOTHING CONFIRMED :P Minimum piece order is 24 shirts, but that can include long sleeve and zip up hoodies. If we order under $500 I could just hold onto them and ship out as needed...but, this doesn't have to be final, we as Ohana all have to agree ;D
BTW, if we do this Alan gets a freebie... ;)
You guys let me know if I'm overstepping my bounds here...

For what it's worth, I like the decal and patch idea, and the zone specific wrench logo....maybe with the ALANTANI.COM under the wrench for balance.......Bill
I like the zone specific also.
But I'm a California raised Washitonian who lives in Hawaii. I'll be buying logos for years!

Hey guys.
Havent been on for a while. This post caught my eye.
Just thinking, If the artwork is made available on the website, any members will have the option to make or print what they like. The cost being with the member. This is a truly International site so this would work around the world. It wont make money but that is not what its about.
Solves a lot of the issues highlighted so far. Personally I would never use material unless I had permission. But with that permission I would represent !!!

Me too.
Once some plan is in place, could kickstarter it to put the funds and recipients together? Just a thought.
I think one insignia in differant sizes would lead to less confusion. A simple design with the web sight would get the ball rolling. For instance the star with the web site through it would not be confused with law enforcement. All that's needed is what color printing, something that would go with all colors of clothing (even pink for we know who.) ;) By the way most Sheriff Depts. use a 6 pointed star. Rudy

Hi Dan
I think you are doing a great job with this. Maybe with the concern about the "sherif " badge confusion, you may be able to work with a silhouette of a Penn versa drag washer with it`s round nodules on the outer edge. Just a suggestion. Good luck with it mate!
Basto
somebody going to make patches? I want one that will fit a hat and one for a jacket/shirt please!
Thanks, Dan & All --
Once we get a standard set of logos agreed upon --
And we get approval from Alan --
Then we will be set with the artwork for shirts, hats, jackets, etc.
Plus the ability to do stickers or patches, keeping the design standardized as established.
Lots of companies do stickers, patches, screen printing, etc.
Here is just one place that does patches -- along with their pricing brackets:

Yup! hahaha...
About the logo, we might want to check with the boss first, before too much effort goes into it.
Looking good
Don't worry folks...no one has forgotten this...lots of behind the scenes going on, haha!
I will be starting a new thread this evening for a shirt/zip-up sweatshirt order...many comments were utilized, but not all. We can't make everyone happy on our first go around, but hopefully it will be a happy medium...Baby steps friends! Maybe someday we'll have lots of shirt designs available, but because minimum orders and what not we are going to start with just one. (Alan has weighed in here and we are good to go).
As far as decals and patches. There are numerous companies that do patches (either printed or actual threaded) as well as there being numerous ways for us to cut decals. If anyone wants to spearhead this...go get 'em tiger, but please get an OK from upper management on your ideas/designs! I'd be happy to send you vector art.
I plan on creating some additional artwork in the near future, but life, work and 2 kids have there own game plan, ::) So, I'll jump on that when I can.
Let's see what happens here...exciting times ahead.
Thanks and kudos to Pjstevko for planting the seed!
