stage IV pancreatic cancer pretty much says it all. he's been strong for his friends and family, but he can't take much more. the struggle and the pain have been overwhelming. i know he would not mind me sharing all this, but i will skip the details. at this point, the details don't matter anyway. there is a moderately risky surgical procedure that could drain the massive amounts of fluid from his abdomen and reduce the pain. he is now in the ER, hoping that his surgeons will be willing. he probably has enough pain medication in him right now to knock out a horse. i've been sidelined with covid, so i've been keeping in touch by phone. lee and mary putman came down from oregon to see him wednesday and were able to help last night. they leave for home today. no one in the house has had a decent night's sleep in weeks. his wife, kehli, has carried the greatest load for his care. she's exhausted. the kids are dealing with this as well as they can, but they still have school.
i shouldn't speak for bryan, but i will anyway. he would tell you to say a prayer, and then go fishing. enjoy life, family and friends. it's not time yet for that last cast, but it's getting close.
Additional prayers sent. Bill
Pancreatic cancer. I have been afraid this was coming. You said it Bill. Thanks Allen.
I hope the doctors can relieve Bryon from his pain.
Cancer Sucks.
Thanks for the update Alan,
Steve
'bout damned time. they are finally going to tap his abdomen and drain off some of that fluid. that will hopefully relieve some of the pain. they were supposed to do this weeks ago. >:(
They drained his abdomen this morning and he is on the way home now. We might stay one more night depending on if they need us.
do yo know if he is feeling any better?
We're all pulling for you Bryan. Stay strong friend!
Bryan is home now, he looks and feels a bit better and he is getting some much needed sleep.
Keli convinced Mary to spend one more night with them, get some sleep and make the long drive home tomorrow.
Your a good man Lee.
Just heart wrenching :-[ , my prayers to him & his family.
I lost someone to that same exact cancer, it's just devastating. I hope his doctors can make him comfortable in any way while he is still here.
...... :'(
Lee - So awesome that you and Mary are there to support - knkow that it is a long drive down. Glad that Bryan is back home and is more comfortable - hoping for the the best. - john
All of our prayers for Bryan and his family. He is an inspiration for me, and has shown me the way to handle the worst hand that life can deal. I am sure that he thanks God every day for his wonderful wife and children and true friends like Alan and Lee.

i think that's the way he wants it!
So inspired by Bryan's passion, tagged along w/my buddy Garett to get his 7-y old son Ryder bit last Sunday. He got his 1st yellow...and a few more fishing the Coronados.
Then the next day, another friend asked if I would take her 13-y old out. 15 min into our 1st stop he is bent double on 12# (Penn 940 bought from R46chevy on a re-wrapped Ugly Stik bass rod) & pulls in a firecracker.
I believe Bryan passion for the sport was in the air...rest easy bud.
Fishing yesterday; nothing to brag about, except maybe the most beautiful day I have had on the water this year. That's good enough for me. Bry Guy, prayers for the best possible outcome, and know you are in the thoughts of many.
Frank
Bryan,
Hopefully the drain is helping ease your pain.
Not much else to say that hasn't already been said.
Sending good vibes your way!
Glad to hear you are feeling better, Bryan!

So sorry for his family's loss! Alan I'll be praying for you and his family.
Fair seas, tight lines and screaming drags Bryan! You'll be missed. Take comfort in knowing you touched a lot of people lives!
So sorry to hear. Condolences to his family and his online brothers as well.
I was lucky enough to meet Bryan in person and share some time talking fish, fishing, reels, and AT.com.
I will certainly miss his positive, never give in attitude not to mention his many contributions to this site. Bryan, you have found peace and for that I am thankful... until we meet again, pal.
My condolences to Bryan's family and friends, Alan T, and all of you guys/gals on AT.
Calm seas and fair skies,
Dom
Rest in Peace Bryan. Such a sad loss. What a wonderful person who was so easy to talk to. My thoughts go out to his family and all the friends feeling his absence today and the days ahead.
Difficult--what to say? He gave 'er all he had, and that's all anyone can hope to do.
Frank
Though I never met Bryan he had text and phone conversations.
When he was in Sacramento seeking alternate treatments it was during the week and I was at work. He reached out to do lunch, sure wish I took time off to see him.
Till we finally meet on the other side.
God Bless,
Steve
Never met him, spoke to him, or even exchanged any gear... but this has still hit me hard. I guess seeing somebody's forum inter-activity for years makes you somehow acquire affinity for the person, especially when they are so well regarded by the members. Damn cancer. Prayers.
I'd like to say Bryan is hanging out over the bar waiting with us with a list of others; but that list is getting long and I really don't have it in me to think about it right now.
Bryan was the first of the Ohana that I met on Oahu over 10 years ago. We have swapped gear and shared some great times. His family is wonderful.
None of this seems adequate.
My deepest condolences to his family and to you Alan, also Ohana members who knew him well!

Tony, thanks for posting this.
When Alan invited me out in 2016, Bryan drove Alan and I (to be more authentic, DD'd) to Dommie's for dinner with the crew. Super guy, and I was just thinking about him a little but ago. My heart goes out to the family, and I pray he now has no pain and tight lines with Sal and Keith, among others. RIP, my friend.
John
Rest in Peace Bryan. You will be missed.
A sad day, I'll think of Bryan every time I pull out a Newell. A genuinely good human, just a sad day. Rest in peace Bryan deepest condolences to his family
How am I living this precious thing we call life, what do I really value, and what will I leave behind when my time comes?
A good man's life is measured by the lives that he touches.
My prayer today is comfort for Bryan's family, and the hope that I can come close to the great example he taught all of us.
In that way, we can each honor Bryan's memory as we are led.
Godspeed Bryan.
All the best, Fred
A sad day for us all. He was Such a Wonderful human being. You know he talked to every part. Fair winds and following seas.
I never met him in person but he was always spoken and thought of so highly by everyone. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

I just hope he got to read this thread before he passed. I just hope he knew that he touched far more lives than the folks he met in person.

looking forward to use it and catch a big one for you amigo Bryan
we will miss you compadre
About 2 months ago I had sent Tom some pouches of albacore along with payment for parts I ordered. Bryan happened to be visiting Tom's shop and Tom gave Bryan a few pouches of the albacore and it also appeared that Bryan got the cash I sent Tom. The joke was on me, and we all got a good laugh out of it. Bryan kept his sense of humor alive and well as he was battling the cancer. 10 times the man I'll never be. He is in heaven now and the Lord has made him whole again, and no doubt he has everyone up there smiling
So sorry to hear this. Bryan was such an amazing guy.
Yes Chris, I agree, he had that positive attitude, right to the end, he was looking for fishing gear to donate to children and so forth, a really good man, wishing his family good health, cheers Don.
One of the good ones gone way too soon.
Rest well Bryan, thanks for everything you brought to this little community.
Hope his families joyful memories provide them some comfort at this sad time. His kindness and thoughtfulness helped so many. Bryan will be missed greatly.
A sad day. My thoughts are with Bryan's family and friends.

Very sad to hear.
May God bless Kehli and the children with comfort and peace.
Pray for them each day as they go through the healing process.
May God also bring peace and comfort to all Bryan's friends who are hurting as well.
Rest in peace, Bryan. Wish we'd all gotten to hang out together. The many times on the phone were warm and genuine conversations and it just doesn't seem like enough. Our love to your family. :(

Very sad news.
Bryan was one of the good ones and will be missed on this site.
Rest in Peace and condolences and prayers to his family.
We have lost one of the greatest. One only needs to spend a little time around here to see the impact Bryan made to this community. May God watch over Bryan's family who I hope take some comfort from the life that he lived and the impact he made on so many.
his wife, kehli, will be going through the painful process of sorting through all of the stuff that bryan had. khanh is our local rod guy and will be helping with all of the rod building gear and the old blanks. i'm going to inventory his fishing gear and start putting items up for sale. but there are also tools, boat gear, and who knows what else. the guy was something of a collector and never threw anything away. there is also much work to be done around the house. i already pressure washed all of the concrete in the front of the house. i'll need to clear the back deck and pressure wash that. i'm thinking saturday mornings. we'll see. it's going to take a while to sort out. for you guys that are local, i'll post up when i'm headed over. for the rest of you, there will be items up for sale. if you see something that you can use, let me know. thanks! alan
the last two weeks were just brutal. when bryan was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer months ago, it had already spread. there were several investigational trials that he could not join because he had a liver transplant 20 years ago. when the cancer spread to his liver, he started accumulating fluid in his abdomen. the pain was described as a 12 on a scale of 10. after winding up in the ER, his surgeon finally tapped the fluid. he drained out a gallon. that brought his pain down to something manageable. the fentanyl patches and oxycodone worked well enough that he, and his family, were actually able to get some sleep.
two nights ago, i got a call from kehli, saying that i should come over. bryan's father, a couple of aunts and a couple of cousins were all there from hawaii. khanh came over, and well as a friend from their church. he was asleep the whole time, breathing heavily. we left that evening without him ever waking up. he passed away hours later, yesterday morning.
with a loss so close, i think that it is important to understand that different people mourn in different ways. and there is no wrong way. for some, there is an overwhelming outward display of emotion. for the men in our family, we have always worked. we deal with the loss by taking care of the people around us and doing all the things that need to get done. i think i'm going to be pretty busy the next few months.
Sad stuff to say the least! I am certainly glad Bryan's family has you to help out. I bet it's a lot.
As Sal would say, "You're a good man, Alan." Please send our love to Kehli and family.
Wish I was closer,
Dom
May he Rest in Peace. He was a very Good Man and Father. Icon of this Great Site.
We will miss you Bryan. Prayers to his Wife and Children.
I will see you on the other side Brother. :'(
RIP, bro. It is a sad day.
RIP Bryan, you will be missed. Prayers and love for the family.
Never really had a chance to say goodbye, Bryan your suffering is over, tight lines brother!
Alan I wish I was closer to help you help the family.
Do you know if there is a GoFundMe setup?
I'd like to contribute in some way
Rest easy Bryan. I'm so glad to have shared a rail with you. My condolences to all your family.
We like to say, "No bad days." but yesterday was a bad day. We lost a good one. The Ohana has an empty seat at the table but we will always remember the one and only Bryan Young.
Awful news.
Feels like the rug's been pulled out from under me.
Well said Daron - Bryan was an 'Icon of this Great Site.'
My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
I'm glad you can be there for them Alan.
Best wishes to all, Justin
Bryan left quite a legacy,he had a great smile.
A great man :fish
Tight lines Bryan.
I'm looking thru clouds right now. Kehli reached out this morning. I can't imagine what strength she can tap at this time to contact Bryan's pals. I am sure Bryan's entire family is as strong as he was.
Bryan and I had a lengthy phone conversation a while back. He was in pain, knew his fate and yet was trying to comfort me as I was going thru some unknown stomach problems.
He was a prince, but I'm preaching to the choir I know. Helpful, generous, kind, positive, cheerful. All terms that have Bryan's picture next to them in Heaven's dictionary.
Contemplation for all: When you see someone you love, what do you think, what do you feel?
Frank
I just received a text from Kehli letting me know about Bryan. I am so grateful that I got to know him. One of the best people I ever had the privilege to know. He'd come to Auburn on work and we'd hang out, talk about all of the things that matter. I am pretty sure I still have a chunk of smoked Marlin in my freezer from 10 years ago that he gave me, tasted horrible but I never threw it away because it was a gift or maybe I was going to use it for crawfish bait I am not sure. Now I guess I will thaw it out and eat it while I play with all the reels I got from him or that have his parts on/in them.
A Hui Hou
Bryan was a fantastic person.
He helped me more than just with fishing and conversation. He even helped me get an interview when I was laid off.
I always liked it when I ran into him, he always had a few minutes for a conversation
He will be missed, but the best usually are.
So sad to hear..... 😔 R.I.P. Bryan. Didn't know you in person but thanks for your help and service during the years. ❤️
Very sad. One of the very good ones who will be missed.
Brendan
I hadn't signed on in several days because of home projects and such. But once I signed on today, the byline hit me like a ton of bricks. I feel terribly for his family.
Although I have personally met few of Ohana, I learned of the character and knowledge of members over the years. Bryan was one of the top tier of the list.
Rest in Peace Bryan. You will be missed by all.
Only glad that the suffering is over with. Bye Bryan, next one I get I'll be thinking of you and it get's released.
RIP Bryan
I haven't been around much of late.. read the news, Dam !!

RIP Bryan.
..."you'll come and find the place where I am lying and kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.
And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me, and all my grave will warmer-sweeter be,
For you will bend and tell me that you love me,
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me"
Last part of Danny Boy, by Frederic E. Weatherly, lyrics 1910, music 1913.
I was reflecting the other day how often I still think of Bryan. I will always wish I was a better friend.
I really miss Bryan and think of him daily. Hopefully Keli will still come up with his great kids for their annual visit.
Oh my! Just looked at the site for the first time in many months. Hard to believe that Bryan is gone. I had the pleasure to meet him while he visited Philadelphia a few years ago and we shared a dinner at Sal's place. I will pray for Bryan's soul and the consolation of his wife and children. I believe he had a son and a daughter. What great guy!
his memorial service is tomorrow. i'm doing the eulogy. it's been tough to write.

Alan I wish I could be there. I have no doubt you're eulogy will be honest, touching and heartbreaking. I wish you the best
Perhaps I had it easier than I was thinking.
Several months ago, I did one; long-prayer style for a family from Cambridge MA. Their son died here in a hiking accident, only 30 yrs. old. I was the only member of our church here on the Island and his Mom was desperate.
Part of me was freaked-out, having never met the young-man or his family before. Another better part of me was thankful for the opportunity(though this took awhile to manifest itself in my heart and mind). Afterwards I was real glad I did it. Not easy in that tiny viewing room with all of the emotion from 4 people that obviously loved him very much. But, them being strangers to me, may even have helped me get over myself a bit.
I have confidence that you'll do better than you may be thinking, Alan.
Just left Alan's house, Lee Putnam, Mike Potts, myself, and the Tani family shared a great meal and shared our stories of Bryan. Still hard to believe he is gone. I will be at the memorial tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing the Ohana tomorrow. Bill
Agree with PJ... you got this boss.
Tough day indeed,
Dom
