Bill thanks for calling, I was gonna call a little closer to the date and verify the depth. I like the sound of 300' or less.

Glad the weather is looking better
Bill is using Windy, which defaults to the ECMWF model but can show others, and Alan is using Windfinder, which I believe is GFS only. Maybe that is the reason?
Looks to me like at this moment (Tuesday AM), ECMFW is showing winds up to 18 knots around 11 AM on Saturday off Morro Bay. GFS shows up to 13.
NWS is forecasting 10-20 knots, which encompasses both.
If you believe the experts, ECMWF tends to be more accurate than GFS. My experience in Baja where I watch more closely is that ECMWF is right much more often, but both models tend to merge as the forecast periods shorten. They deviate a lot long term, especially during the formation of a big event like a potential hurricane.
Hope that you guys get good enough weather. We all know that the forecast can still shift a quite bit between now and then.
-J
Regardless of forecast model, it all kinda looks like Morro Bay! I think you guys are gonna have a great trip!! - john
Looking forward to catching a few fish. Any thoughts on Friday night dinner? Bill
Alan and I should be there around mid-day Thursday. So I should have time to get some groceries and I can cook reasonably well. My only gluten free, vegan recipe is black coffee, though.
How many will be there?
Jack
i'm going to pull out the grill. not sure what's going on it yet.
Bill +1. Should be there Friday after 12 noon.
I won't make it to town until 8-9pm on Friday, I'm leaving after work
safe travels!!!

bringing lee?
Inshore waters SLO forecast for Sat from NWS as of Wed AM:
Sat NW wind 10 to 20 kt, becoming 20 to 30 kt in the afternoon. Seas 5 to 7 ft. Wave detail: NW 6 ft at 8 seconds, NW 2 ft at 12 seconds and S 2 ft at 17 seconds. Patchy fog in the afternoon.
Source: https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?x=125&y=70&site=lox&zmx=&zmy=&map_x=125&map_y=70
The forecast from the ECMFW model seems to be holding up so far.
Looks a bit bumpy with such a short period, but the swell is not huge. Wind is getting up there . Per John's comment, I am wondering where they draw the line to call off trips there. Close to shore maybe not as bad with the NW wind and swells? Keeping my fingers crossed for you guys...

Yes she will be bumming around town while we fish. I can bring a pot of chili and corn bread.
The weather doesn't look promising. Hope they're wrong
Have a great trip and a good time, guys!
NOAA Marine forecast for Saturday looks a little like peering down into a washing machine while on the Agitation Cycle, with 20-25 knot winds, and close swell intervals
Hope it is not that bad.
Maybe bring some surf fishing gear, just in case.
It has been unseasonably cold and weird weather up here in the Sierra Nevadas at 4500', for May. 32° last night, high today around 57°. Winds 7mph to 15mph. We received about 3 minutes of rain yesterday.
Best, Fred

A little better forecast now so that's a positive. A little breezy and lumpy but classic morro bay weather

nah, it's gonna blow like hell!!! ;D ;D ;D
Packing the truck now and headed out in about an hour (0800hrs). Have the chili and corn bread too :d . Bill
See you gents tonight at the clubhouse.....unless they cancel
Just talked to the Landing and they said to expect to fish around 400' but all depths are open. If its breezy I'd expect we'd stay shallower than that....
i brought four electric reels.
Well the forecast took a dive again, it's not pretty It went from 10-15 in the morning to 15-25 in the morning to 35 in the afternoon. Nice swell at 8 seconds to boot. Ugh
Please use your good common sense on this, guys.
Maybe the weather will change overnight —- but it doesn't look like it will.
When the forecast changes for the worse less than 10 hours ahead of launching —- it becomes pretty real, as well as likely.
Be safe. Charter might scrub the trip tomorrow morning.
On the Eastern side of the Sierras, there have been plenty of times when we went to Bridgeport Reservoir early in the morning — only to find strong winds and whitecaps. We just called it a no-boat day, and headed up to some of the smaller lakes to fish the shore. There will always be more days to fish when prudence and caution are being followed.
Best, Fred
We had a great trip and caught boat limits of rockfish and a couple of lingcod! The weather/conditions were terrible to start the day but it actually got nicer as the day went on. We started out in 400' feet and worked that depth a lot of the day. Lots of chilli peppers and beautiful vermilion rockfish were caught throughout the day. Towards the end of the trip we moved into the shallows and fished under 100' depth. Several lings were caught in the shallows including mine. All the AT crew caught limits. A couple of us headed back to the Tani clubhouse and had a great dinner. Once again it was a great trip with amazing friend. Thanks Alan for opening your home to us!
Glad the weather cooperated!
Best, Fred
Glad it was a good trip and also that you folks did an appearance on the weekly Zoom call to share some tales! - john
It was fun fun trip, thanks PJ for for getting it started. The trip up the coast was a bit of an e-ticket but the weather gods smiled on us when it mattered. Nice sacks of chillis and limits of fat vermillion rock fish
A few years ago Ted sent me a modern Penn sea boy, I put it to good use and it worked flawlessly. thanks Ted!
Hey, I have one of those hats!
Glad it worked out. Nice to see you on the zoom and meet PJ.

The fish just wanted to die. We were fishing double dropper loops, 2 hooks and a sinker. One guy got 3, 2 on the hooks and the third ate the sinker
. Trophy of the day was Bill's monster cabezon

Well this was a good trip. Good friends, good food, and good fishing. The wife and I made the 4 hour trip north to Morro Bay where she got us a room at the Harbor House Inn on Main Street. The room was clean and presentable. After checking in we made the short drive to the Club house where Alan and Jack Bradley had been hard at work doing yard chores and cleaning up the chest high weeds in the backyard. After some chit chat we dug into my homemade chili and corn bread muffins. After dinner and a few drinks, the wife and I headed back to the hotel for the night and an Oh Dark 30 wakeup. Nickoli and Vanessa arrived at the Club House just after we took off. And PJ made it after them. Well the 0400 hrs alarm came quicker than expected, but I got up made coffee and was downstairs putting on my boots as Alan and Jack stopped to pick me up.
At the landing we assembled out gear and the stragglers arrived. My choice of gear consisted of a ProGear 454 and an Extra Narrow Tiburon Jigmaster. Both were mounted on Penn Californian 6'6'' rods. Alan had 4 Daiwa Tanacoms for loaners. Boarded the boat at 0500 hrs and left the dock at 0530 hrs. As we were waiting the Black Pearl was headed out at 0500 hrs. During the usual safety briefing we were told, we had a 2 1/2 hr run up north.
As we rounded the breakwater the swells picked up and there was a steady breeze blowing. I don't know how fast the Endeavor is but this boat can MOVE! Sheridan estimated 12 knots but it sure felt faster. As we steamed farther out, still hugging the coast line somewhat the swells picked up and the wind increased. At about the 1 hr mark we had the first passenger chumming with more to quickly follow. I gave my last 2 Dramamine to a fellow AT member hoping I didn't regret this act of kindness.
By about 0745 hrs we passed the Black Pearl who had a 30 minute head start. Told you the Endeavor was fast.
We passed the Piedras Blancas Light Station around 0830 hrs and made our first drop in about 450'. I was using one of Alan's Tanacoms. I hit the bottom and immediately hooked up. Started the electric retrieve and the battery died, or so I thought. Manually cranking the rest of the way a good size Boccaccio came up. I went to change out the battery and there was no battery attached to the reel?!?! Crap! Found another battery in Alan's bag and continued fishing. Plenty of good size Boccaccio were coming over the rail. In about 20 minutes and 1 reset the boat had its fill of them. About this time I looked at the deck and what did I see poking out from underneath my fish sack? The battery I thought went swimming. ;D
We then moved to another spot to load up on Reds. Two drops had the boat limit of Reds, all were good/great size. Another stop and we were done with rock cod. The skipper turned the boat inshore to try another variety of near shore fish. In about 120' of water we set up a drift. I dropped in with the ProGear and a Bryan Young Hexbar. First time I've ever used a hexbar and first drop yielded a legal ling cod. I'm stoked, I wanted to bring home a ling cod. A few more drifts and I caught a great size Cabezon. Doubly stoked now! A bunch of lings were landed by the boat, including the potential jackpot winner. If only Jack would have entered the jack pot :o . By about 1300 hrs we called it a day and headed back to the barn. A staff meeting was held on the bow and we toasted the AT.com members who aren't with us anymore :d
The deckhands cleaned the fish and boat burgers were great. Can't think if I have ever had a boat burger ??? . Back at the dock we all disembarked and headed for home. Alan and Jack dropped me off at my room and headed for the club house. A quick shower and cursory clean up of the gear and the wife and headed for the club house. We arrived just as PJ was carving the most excellent tri-tips. Tri-Tip, left over chili, coleslaw, corn bread muffins, and smoked tuna was the menu for the evening. A few drinks and a campfire in the BBQ ended the evening. After some hearty goodbyes, the wife and I headed back to the room for a good night sleep.
All in all an excellent trip with good quality fish, good food and great friends. Till next time, Bill
I wish I could have made the trip.
Man, I didn't escape the wind either, it BLEW at the outdoor wedding in Sonoma. But still would have rather been with the boys!
Nice pic's, even better haul gents!
Next year....
