So I am going to paint some side-plates with Cerakote bake on gun finish - but I need someone to take a crappy 113h or similar sideplate and bake it in the oven at 200 for two hours- tell me if it holds up. I only have few plates left and they are in too good of shape to be melting
also wondering if sideplate material is the same through the years- darker maroon plates vs brighter red- I know some are plastic.....
also need to pick a few colors to start with- I am thinking the safety orange for the plates and a flat black for the rings.....maybe pink for the ladies
what colors would you guys want? http://www.cerakoteguncoatings.com/finishes/#
Why am I not shocked that you dont have volunteers lined up! ;)

I am not shocked that there has been some volunteers lining up by PM. Now if I could only get some votes for color choices
I have to buy enough to do quite a few plates, even a 4oz sample goes a long way.
Safety orange has my vote- I already have some black so I was thinking orange plates with flat black rings/bars/levers/seat etc
might be pretty danged righteous.....
I'm sure we could round up some Penn 60, 65 sideplates...
Red or black would be awesome! :-\
I look forward to the results. Senator Prime Chris! ;)
I feel confident in saying the plates will not tolerate that temp.
Duracoat is a similar hard polymer coating that does not require baking. It is available in lots of colors.

Many years ago I baked on the coating on a pair of exhaust headers. Stunk up the oven and kitchen for weeks. After that, the only thing that's going in my oven is food. :P
Daron I found a solution to my Senator Prime Color scheme. However It is going to be a little crazy looking....I will throw up some samples later in a new post to get your opinions guys.

How did this turn out??
Hello Joel
Hope all is well with you since we last spoke.
I would be more than happy to send you some Penn 113H side plates and rings
And/Or Penn long beach side plates and rings Both reels are apart and ready to ship. Please take as much time as you like no rush to get them back.
Color Suggestions,
Gun Metal and Black
Platinum Silver and Black
Cobalt Blue and platinum silver
Orange and matte Black
PS Love those 4:1 Penn 113H gear sets you sold me Last year caught some nice fish with them
Thank you and best of luck,
Sky King Joe
I don't know what the newer sideplates are made from but the old ones (bakelite) can be heated to 300 degrees Celsius (570 degrees F) without melting or crumbling.

VW, have you used this product?? Interesting!
I have not applied it personally, but I know people who do. It is quite hard and durable. Cerakote is harder and would be great for metal parts, especially spools.
If Joel.B does the tests, it will be interesting to see how the plates fare. I suspect not well.
Nice selfie Karl! ;)
You look like Richard Dreyfuss from Jaws! ;D

This is interesting. There was a thread where someone was Powder Coating reel parts and we diverged into discussing Duracoat, Cerakote and Gun Kote. After much research I decided to spend a few hundred bucks and get setup to do Gun Kote as it has the best saltwater properties (as testified by the MilSpecs). I had never thought of trying to get any of the coatings to stick to the Bakelite though. I would guess that Duracoat would stick to it best, but who knows. I'm guessing none stick any better than powder coat and that doesn't work too well (I have a few reels I purchased from a charter outfit that I'm cleaning powder coat off of). Try using carb or brake cleaner to break the sheen and then the coating might have a chance of holding. I have a few spare side plates that I'll try the Gun Kote on.

Talked with Joel yesterday. Noting much going on. No reels or antique gun refurbishing either...but he is hanging in there. Send him a note. I'm sure he will like that when he gets back on the computer.
