this summer for a few days we had a hummer at the feeder that would pig out the take a rest, maybe he got drunk on the sweet sugar water?

Today I observed something unusual and interesting.  A Hummingbird chasing a Monarch butterfly.  Butterfly would perch and Hummingbird would approach and peck at the body. Butterfly would move and Hummingbird would follow and repeat.    At first I thought "I can see how the Hummingbird might think it was a flower".  After moving a few times I thought maybe the Hummingbird knew exactly what it was and was trying to chase it off.  Anyone else ever observed something like this?

That's funny Gary, just like the kids of today ;D.
I have that same feeder and can hardly take a picture. He visits many times daily, but never stops.

Interesting VW, I've seen birds chase butterflies and eat them at mid air before. Maybe that one is just too big for his beak ;D.
Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Birds typically avoid consuming Monarchs due to their flavor from eating milkweed plants as a caterpillar. The Viceroy is a Monarch mimic only a bit smaller but does not consume the nasty milkweed plants. It only hides in plain sight due to its coloration.

Was flying on of my RC gliders in a park last year when a Canada Goose flew through with a hummer hot on its tail chittering like mad. Chased it for the few blocks I could see it. Then a few minutes later came right back through the park without the goose and lit after my glider. Only for a few seconds as it quickly realized my glider was not threat. This little hummer was sporting the big brass ones and the attitude to match.

That's cool your into flying RC gliders/sailplanes this isn't other non-Fishing/Hunting hobbie.  I've had some interesting interactions between wildlife and my sailplane as well.  I enjoy fling at height with Frigatebirds. The best...kinda a confirmation that your doin the right stuff, since these guys are the true masters of thermals.
