I recently bought a used Penn formula 10LD single speed  reel. I used a GLD tutorial from this site to service it. Is this reel capable of trolling large diving lures (Mans30+,rapala x-30, mauraders,etc...)for wahoo? The max drag on the reel is stated at 14lbs.

Also, is a Penn squall 60ld capable of fighting 60-100 pound yft( chunking and live baiting)
? I fish out of Venice, La about 10 times a year.

Thanks so much for this excellent resource!!

It'll troll those lures.  Drag seems iffy for Wahoo.  I'd replace the hooks/split rings on the Manns and Magnum XRap with Owner hyper wire split rings and either Owner Stinger Trebles or appropriate single hooks.  I was catching YT on XRaps and broke the standard rings and hooks like crazy.  No issues with better rings/hooks.

i would not.  it's the graphite frame that kills this deal for me.  i'd stick with an all aluminum chassis.  :-\

I think the frame is up to pulling those lures.  The Formula 10 has a stronger frame than the TLD20 or 30.  However, I do trust and prefer aluminum over graphite for these duties so my TLD20II and 30II have Tiburon and Willfish topless frames. I use them for pulling Magnum XRaps, Mirrolures, Halco's, etc without concern.

I've seen reports that graphite gets brittle over time so that'd be the concern I think.  Heavy drag, brittle frame, Wahoo strike at 70mph... craaack!!!  I've seen TLD50's that have exploded but nothing in the smaller sizes.  The Formula frames were stronger in the reel seat area than the TLD's so they should hold up better, but in the long run?  Well, somebody has to be the Guinea Pig, why not you? :D
