HalibutZach

Hi everyone.  I am a newbie here.   I live in Eugene, Oregon and have fished the Oregon coast and ocean  for.........40 years, and I  continue to do so.    Actually my Dad started me fishing at age 4 and I  have not put down the rods since.  We catch all of the Albacore tuna, halibut, lingcod, rock fish, salmon, crab,  we can eat, and also keep friends happy.    I really love the ocean fishing.  My 26 foot North River Offshore boat works excellent in the ocean in what I call, (The Little Bearing Sea).  My favorite ocean rod for halibut is a Shiamno Trevela, 6' long, rated 80lb-200lb mated with a Elec Tra Mate 440XP motor and Penn 113h reel.  I bought a new Elec Tra Mate 412hs outfiit and a new Penn 113h reel   in 1974 and still run it today.  Neither  have never broken down.   Replace drag washers in reel every 8-10 years. Great Products.    Our halibut fishery here is 600-900 feet deep so the electric outfits are a blessing.  OK, enough blabbing for now, I look forward to sharing info with everyone and I will be posting profile stuff.

Hi from the aledgedly dry side of the mountains.

Sometimes we can catch halibut in 450' of water.

welcome, zach!  someone was asking me about fishing that deep one time.   my suggestion was a scotty electric downrigger.  you can actaually set the drag pressure one one of these!
send me an email at alantani@yahoo.com for questions!

Hi Keta, yes I fish the shallow water halibut as well.  I had  very good success this year in 200'-230' of water.  I know you know where the Rock Pile is and this year some of the larger  halibut came  from there, (51"-65" halibut).  I personally like to catch and eat the 25-30 pounders.  I have caught several over 100lbs this year and my boat policy is to release them.    I have some 900' flatops that we fish and they usually produce these 100 pounders, so I stay away from that fishery.  Thanks for the  welcome.

Hi  Alantani:  Thanks for the welcome!!!!  I would not recommend anyone using downriggers fishing that deep because there are occassional pinacles that show up on the sonar and you will get hung up and loose your gear, which means a 3-4-5 hundred dollar loss.

The last time over for halibut this year we found a lot of nice fish on a 450' hump west of the Rock Pile.

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Welcome Zach:  You wont get me fishing that deep.  I fished for Grouper in Baja at 350'.  Hot and sticky weather and bringing the line up empty was exhausting.  The next time I fish that deep (if there is a next time) I want to use electric,  Dominick
Leave the gun.  Take the cannolis.

There are two things I don't like about fishing.  Getting up early in the morning and boats.  The rest of it is fun.
