Just recently had a friend come to me with a Penn 980 mag power conventional, complaining that the clicker would not stay engaged. after doing the usual service I started to look at the clicker, I noticed that the click tongue was in very bad shape and actually worn heavily. so I took my multi tool and ground it out. will the newer style click tongue and button work for this reel?,meaning the one that you do not have to peen in?also the Clicker gear on the spool is so loose you can pull it off, does that constitute for needing a new spool? any help would be appreciated. thank you

Scott's has that spool in stock for $32.
They also have the c-clip clicker button, 69B-200 clip is needed with it.
There are some measurement notes on replacing the e clip style. You need to measure your plate thickness to be sure it will work.

No plate thickness issues for the 980 reels for the click button...that just applied to the old 60 series reels.

I have a Power Mag 980 with a threaded reel seat (see pic).  Can someone tell me which clamp bolts will fit it (part no.)?

Also, does anyone know the part number for a black spacer bar for the 980?  Thank you.

I don't know what bars will fit, but you can knock the threaded insert for the clamp bolts out towards the spool - either remove the spool or line from the spool  - and then just use standard penn clamp studs from a jigmaster, 113, etc. and the appropriate nuts. the square hole for the inserts are the same size as for the clamp studs.

The standard Jigmaster's  bars will fit the 980 & 990.
If you want to take it one step further, try these

These are a little more costly, but should last for a long time.

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Thank you for the info, gentlemen.

Does the left side plate of a Penn 990 fit the 980?    I know that the 970 and 980 plates are interchangeable.

Afraid not, Joe. The 990's diameter is larger.   :-\

I have extra spools for my Power Mag 970 and 980 and would like to set up the left side plate for a quick change.  Does anyone know of where (on the WWW) I could look for some thumb screws (finger-tightening bolts) to replace the stock ones? If you happen to know the thread specs, hey, even better!
