Would using 2 thrust washers be sufficient to help reduce axial load or would you need to use thrust bearings or angular contact bearings?

Thanks,

I would think the load would still be passed through to the bearing.

Also, just adding a angular contact bearing for the pinion bearing may not help the load/handle binding issues in all LD reels. I replaced a pinion bearing with a angular contact bearing in a Avet SX that was brand new to see if this would help with their binding issue and see if I could squeeze out some more drag. With the new bearing I still found I was getting the same binding at around 10 lbs at strike even with the replacement bearing.

But, you may want to give it a shot and let us know it works in your reel.

Exactly.

I too purchased an Avet reel for the sole reason of experimenting with a number of alternative bearing arrangements, including angular contact bearings and others, and with the intention of doing a big long explanatory write-up about it. I haven't gotten around to doing that within the last year or so, but to make a long story short, the difference or improvement in performance was small at best.
(i do have one other modification left to try, but haven't gotten around to that either)
