Looking at Penn 506

Gents,

I am looking at a Penn 506.  The 500-series seems a little weird to me.  Specifically, per the Scotts Site, the 505 takes 30# and looks to have the same Parts as the 506 which is spec'ed out at 12#.

What am I missing?

505 is wider than the 506. Essentially the same reel other than line capacity due to the width.

I am aware it is narrower, but whats with the line test difference?  Even the Penn infor mentions that they are essentially the same with one narrower.  So why the test difference?

It has to do with line capacity...nothing more.

You can put 30lb on the 506, you are just going to be limited on the capacity the narrow version can hold.
Just trying to make sure you understand. Its the same drag capacity, just not the amount of line that will fit on that narrow spool.

Ok..

So the drag can handle 'heavier' line but due to capacity, they wrote the spec with lighter line.  I can then put on modern braid and have both the stronger line and a fair amount of capacity..

I use their recommended line test as a guide to how to rig and use the reel.  Going purely by that, the 506 is in the same league as a Penn 9.  But this is not the case. 

I wonder how many people picked the 506 up, saw the line recommendation, then chose something different?

Spectra "cures" this "problem".      For this size reel 50#-60# is what I'd recommend.

About 300 yards of 50 lb spectra fills about 3/4 of a 506 spool. You can use 25 lb or 30 lb monofilament to fill up the spool and adjust the drag like it was full of mono for surface fishing. If you are going to use the reel for rock fishing, put the mono on first (as a filler) and then wind the spectra over it.

Lol..  not a fan of braid although i use it.  I have the cuts to prove it..
