Hello
I'm Mark and from the UK. Iv been reading this forum for a while now so decided to join. I thi k what we do and use in in the UK is like we are stuck in the past.

I am looking at a Makita 15 for porbegal sharks over here. All the charter skippers say that we need a 30w minimum but I thi k are stuck in the dark ages. What I'd like to do is use smaller lighter and as powerful gear. What do you think  to using 88lb power pro braid from top to bottom tied directly onto a 15 foot rubbing leader as the skippers over here want us to use 40 lb mono start to finish on the real we do get multiple hook ups at times often in 300 foot of water on the drift I have been contemplating makaira 15 for this along with my plasma 204066 PSU do you think this would make a good combination for sharks up to 300lb what are your pros and cons with me look at the setup
much appreciated Mark

Hi Mark,

I'm not familiar with the reel but on the spectra I'd use 60 pound rather than 80 pound to replace 40 pound mono, more line on the reel and 40 pound mono must be working.

The reel holds 310 yards of 30# mono, Jerry Brown 60 pound is about the same diameter as 20 pound mono and I think Power Pro is a bit thinner.  You should have plenty of line and 27 pounds of drag is more than enough for a "40 pound" set up.   Attach a short topshot of 40 pound mono, 10'-20' and you are ready to fish.

I'd say yes this reel will work when fishing in 300' deep water.
Hi, my name is Lee and I have a fishing gear problem.

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

The Makaira 15 would do just fine...but if you can get a Makaira 16, I think the reel will be better.  Slightly larger diameter but narrower reel.

Far left is a Makaira 15 next to a Makaira 16 next to a Makaira 20 for comparison.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

thanks for the reply's if we mention sharks and braid in the us most will cringe. the plasma rod I think is good with about 6/7lb of drag at strike what are your thoughts on this if you have seen or used one
thanks again  ;D
