Hi,

I finally completed my maintenance and repair of the my Penn 12/0 with an aluminum spool. We purchased the reel around 2006.

I believe this is normal, but I have a question (see photos). I notice when I loosen the star significantly it exposes some space between the star and the chrome cover that is inserted into the side plate. Is this normal? Wouldn't this exposure possibly expose the outside portion of the drag if kept loose in the elements? I am just curious if there is a bullet proof way to keep drag area completely sealed with this version of 12/0. I know other versions only allow access to drag from inside (rather than the outside).

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Wade

That is normal Wade. You don't want the star to bottom out on the case before you reach max drag.
just make sure the stack is greased well with cal's and you will be good. A regular service schedule will keep your 12/0 in tip top shape.

As I recall, you should always have some gap at all ranges of the drag setting.  If not, the start will bind with the cover.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D
