Sorry for all of the wordy info, Joe --

Sort of reminds me of the story about the Rancher up in Montana --

Everything covered in snow -- blizzard conditions, roads iced up, been below 0 for a couple of weeks.

No one going out unless they need to.

Rancher decides to chain up the old flatbed -- head into town for a Church Service.

He shows up at Church on Wednesday night -- he is the only one there besides the Pastor.

Pastor sez, "surprised you made it, Hank.  Since you are the only one here, do you want to go ahead with the service -- or just call it off tonight?"

Hank sez -- "Preacher, I raise cattle for a living.  If I took a truck-load of hay out to my cows in the snow -- and only one showed up -- that one would expect to be fed"...

Pastor really got excited -- and instead of going on for an hour -- went on for two hours, non-stop -- preaching a hell-fire strong sermon -- never even stopping to catch his breath.

After the long service, the Pastor shook Hank's hand and asked him how he liked the service...

Hank sez, "It was a fine talk...but Preacher, I raise cattle -- and if I took a load of hay out to my cows in a blizzard -- and only one showed up -- I sure as heck wouldn't feed him the whole load at one time"...

Show us some pics of your reel when done, Joe -- it doesn't have to be complicated -- it just works however you set it up.

Fred; That's a classic! ;D ;D ;D ;D.............Joe

P.S. I'll take pictures of the whole procedure from start to finish, providing there isn't a blizzard. ;) ;D

I didn't want to start a new thread on maging a reel so I stared by perching three Penn mag systems from Scott's and this is what I've done so far. More pictures to follow. Sorry but I have been so busy I didn't have time to do more..............Joe

Second phase. Putting the mags in place in the inside of the Jig-Master 500 with hot glue. I found that to be a lot less messy and quicker the epoxy. I had made a big deal out of it by over thinking this procedure, but when following simple simple advice, it wasn't that difficult. I have to test the cast-ability to see if the system works as it is, if I have to I can add more or remove to adjust control.

Up in the first posts Fred n' Mo talked about alternating the polarity. What's that?

Are the magnets marked +&-?

If there's 2 polarities on each magnet, wouldn't one side attract and the other side repel? If so, hadaya make 'em stick to the washers if the polarities on the mags. are sposed to alternate.

Man Atlanta's lookin pretty good in the 1st half!( don't pay real close attention, 'less it's the Raiders er Niners, so I's readin 'n typin, too).

Yes, Gfish, the magnets will stack with all + on top and all - on the bottom. So when they are removed from the stack they go in with alternating directions. They do stick to the washers this way. My recollection of Lenz's law is that the magnets induce an electric field in the spool as it goes by, which induces a magnetic field that opposes the magnetic field of the magnets, thus slowing the spool. The coolest part is that it works with any metal, doesn't have to be iron. The Packers picked the wrong week to go flat.

If Ive understood your question then +or- will repel when two magnets are put in  ++ facing one-another or -- and conversely + and - attract. So putting the magnets in sequence such as the four magnets that are shown in my last photo that are +,-,+,- creates that magnetic field that they are talking about thus in Lenz's law as Sid also stated.

Joe.

Right guys,

Either positive or negative will stick to the washers -- but when stacking the mags -- like repels, opposites attract.  So you end up the same if stacked -- mags are just closer to the spool.

The faster the spool rotates -- the more resistance that is created -- as the field is amplified and increased.

Thinking of doing this on some of my Penns for my kids to use surfcasting...  I learned to cast with the chromed brass spools ;D  And also learned how to pick out birds nests... And splice the line after sometimes having had to cut it.   My father was not inclined for such things, but gave me the freedom to learn the hard way.  Now, as a father, I'd like to take advantage of technology... and spend more of my time and patience actually fishing  :D  It looks easy to do, so why not?

Saltydog posted a tutorial here back in 2013 on magging a Jigmaster 500. Very informative, I've used his method to mag a reel many times. It works!! and works good!! Here's a link:  http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=8230.0

For an adjustable mag the attached link describes a system that has worked for me.
