Removing shields from spool bearings

I know I saw a tutorial on this somewhere on this site. I am a freshwater fisherman and own a collection of Shimano low profile casting reels. I would like to remove the shields from a set of spool bearings and experiment with a mixture of grease/oil on them. Although I've cleaned some in acetone and added either oil or TSI 321 on some of them, they are still too loud for my taste. I've got a few older/used bearings that I could practice on. All the bearings I'll be removing the shield on are Shimano OEM stainless. Thanks for any tips.

Riley you will get many recommendations on how and what to use to open the small 3x10x4 and 4x10x4 bearings you have.

For years I have used the Owner light Mutu circle hooks. Size 2 to 2/0. The point on these circle hooks is like a hypodermic needle. Its sharp..! It will catch the smallest of retaining rings.

If your bearings are still making noise they need replacing.

Keith is right. If the noise your hearing happens during a cast you more than likely need to place the spool bearings... Jeff

Thanks for the fish hook tip, it works great on those retaining rings. It seems most of the bearings have a pressed in shield and I tried a few methods of prying and popping them off but no luck.
