I just picked up a Penn 112 h with aluminum spool. I'm wondering what kinda upgrades I can do to it and what kinda rod you suggest. I will be using it on the pier for cobia and drum.

It is easier to describe what can't be done to your reel. However, without a doubt the best first step is a stainless steel gear sleeve and a service according to this forum. If it is old you should switch to HT-100 drags during the service. A new handle would be nice and then I'd fish the crap out of it. You'll probably be happy forever but if you want to change anything after that it will be clear to you.

It has new ht 100 drags in and I just cleaned and relubed it. What is the reason for a Ss gear sleeve?

What other ideas do you guys have?

There's a new SS gear set being made as we speak. Check out Black Pearl's thread in his section of the forum.

A narrow frame and spool is another option.

What can I do to improve the gear ratio? I'm getting a Ss sleeve and double dogging it when I get the money to order the parts. Also going with a tib frame. It already has a aluminum spool. Anyone have the info to order the double dog kit and the Ss sleeve kit and if anyone knows how I can get a better gear ratio let me know how to order that as well. I don't even know what kinda gear ratio it has in it right now but I want to go bigger. Lol

The gear ratio on the 112h was a 4:1 the gears that black pearl is working on I believe will be 4.8:1. Really think about what you want this reel to do. Jig or bait fish or whatever. Sometimes a higher ratio is not always good. As far as the Tib frame. If you stay with your current spool you will get away with only a frame upgrade. If you go narrow you will need the 112HN kit. I upgraded my 112h to the 112HN kit and it is awesome. Bottom line it's a personal preference thing and how it will be fished.

It will be fished for cobia and drum with a fish finder

The lower gear ratio may be what you need for bait fishing. More power.
