In a Penn 5500SS the bearing on the side plate wobbles some. Is there a shim or something else that should go in with the bearing? The other bearing in body or the reel does not wobble. When reel is together you can feel the gears. I dont feel the gears in other Penns I own.  Reel was bought an sat on shelf for a long time. I dont think anything is wrong with bearings, just side plate allows bearing to wobble around. Can this be fixed without a new plate? I dont see how this happened with it being fished only a dozen times or so. Thanks

I thought I would add an update. The side plate was defective. Part was as new but something was wrong with it from factory.

Now there is another problem, the anti reverse only works part of the time now. What did I do wrong putting it back together? This is the older model with the flat clip that goes around the gear. It originally had miles of grease around it. Do I need to go back an pack all that grease around it as before. I am the only one to take the reel apart so I know its something I did not do correctly. It looks like the same anti reverse as on my Abu Garcia but it works much better. Thanks

You probably opened up the spring fingers a little too much when disassembling it, yes you will need to open it  up again. Try to squeeze the fingers on the dog gently and set it back in, also make sure you don't use oil or grease at that area. Penn recommends a little oil there, I like mine dry.
If that doesn't do it, you'll need a new dog.
Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

That worked perfectly. I hope I did not squeeze them to much. But it works nicely. Thanks for the help. For years I have just put reels on the shelf an purchased a new one. 12 reels I had sat on shelf, after reading these post have put them back in like new condition. Thanks again for the help.

Not a problem Blacklab, glad it worked out.
