Hey guys - thanks for all of the help.

I am hoping to avoid any sort of adhesive or coating either before or after the wraps.

You could try using the double-sided indoor/outdoor mounting tape made by Scotch and sold at Home Depot etc.

Never wrapped a cord grip with it, but for other uses I've found it to be extremely tacky, yet leave almost no residue upon removal.

Just a thought.

You may find that a cord with a lot of stretch helps too.  The more you stretch it while wrapping the tighter it will remain.  Those longitudinal strings inside paracord are designed to provide a small amount of controlled stretch on a parachute.  But, paracord is more difficult to stretch by hand than a hollow braided nylon.

thanks so much for all of the help

was looking at this stuff but am wondering if it is too thin or just what your general opinions of it were

I wrapped a gaff handle with that stuff and the tar was unbelievably difficult to remove from my hands later-tried four or five different solvents and nothing short of straight gasoline was truly effective.

Not Recommended.

Ok, the best cord I have found so far is
ATWOOD 1/16" many colors gives the right feel
when coated with classic coat thinned with acetone
Drys hard in two days

Nice grips DaveB, I too prefer the cord made by Atwood.

Thanks so much for all of the help from everyone.

Sounds like I need to put in an order to Atwood at some point.

Thanks again for everything.
