Penn states that the 30 VSW holds 550 yards of 50 lb mono, but as we all know there is a pretty wide range of diameters in what line manufacturers call 50 lb mono, going from .023 inches to .0295 inches. This makes for about a 200 yard difference in what the reel will actually hold. The average 50 lb mono line seems to be somewhere around .028 inches, but many manufacturers/brands, Momoi Diamond in particular (50 lb mono is rated at 80 lb breaking strength at .0295 in.) for whatever reason market their line strength as different from where they actually break, and the diameters are all over the place too, which makes it hard to figure the actual line capacity because line diameter is the real controlling factor. 200 yards is a lot of difference when you're talking about 550 yards of stated capacity.

Check out this capacity calculator and you will see what I mean (scroll down for imperial measurements):

Here is a list of lines by diameter: http://www.mels-place.com/Mels-Place...Comparison.pdf

I called Penn and asked what diameter 50 lb line they used for their stated 550 yards of capacity on the 30 VSW internationals and they did not have that info.

So without going down to my tackle shop and dropping cash on a shot in the dark spooling job that I may have to trash and redo if the capacity for a given line is way off, do any of you guys have any real world numbers for mono capacity vs diameter vs lb test on the Penn Internationals, and the 30 VSW in particular?

Thanks!

They've been discussing ways to figure the math here:

Seems to be a work in progress...
