My family and I have done what you want to do. We fly into Anchorage and rent a car/van to drive down to Seward/Kenai. You can rent motel rooms or lodges at Seward where there are many charter boats especially if you want halibut and silver salmon. You can stay in Soldotna between Seward and the Homer, next to the Kenai river where there are runs of sockeye and silver depending on the date. Alaska Fish and Game and Anchorage newspaper have excellent websites to best time your visit. You can get halibut charters a little south of Soldotna where they launch from the beach. We have had good luck there if you want medium(40-60#) or smaller(25#) halibut. Further south of Soldotna is Homer known for its large halibut. For your flyfishing son, they use fly rods to catch sockeye but it is combat fishing. Good luck.
