Old school ..

Ha! I still vividly remember when my dad's depthfinder was a one piece 16' cane pole.  :o  Since we mainly fished walleye he would probe the depth until the pole didn't touch bottom & throw out a marker, then move along the drop-off a couple hundred yards or so and do the same thing. Then we would zigzag troll back and forth from marker to marker.  He was pretty darn good with that cane pole. We'd keep moving and he'd never miss a beat, almost like a slow motion baton twirler, down, back, flip it around/over, down, back, flip it over and so on. We sure caught a lot of fish back then considering what we had for  equipment.   :)
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)

Cane poles rock, I can't find any here in MI,
I tried some from the garden section at lowes but they were not strong enough.

Cane poles rock...

...on dry land, TOO!!!
once got stuck hiking in pitch darkness (through sheer stupidity, must admit)
could only find packed trail by tapping the ground w/ cane walking stick
had cut it from live boo week earlier (through sheer brilliance, if I say so myself)
